TOWN AND COUNTRY

As summer quickly comes to an end and we looktowards fall, the harvest will soon begin, schoolwill start and yes, we will have an election.

It seems as though I just announced mycandidacy and now we’re only two short monthsfrom the election.

As I have been campaigning throughout ruralMitchell County and many of the cities in thecounty, I have met many nice people and havegotten numerous words of encouragement andsupport.

I want to thank everyone for that and appreciatevery much your time.

I also have realized that as I set goals each dayto campaign, I invariably talk longer than I shouldand fall short.

So, I wanted to take this opportunity to writeabout my qualifications and experiences and sharewith you why I think I would be the best choice tobe the next sheriff of Mitchell County.

First off, Iowa Code states that to be sheriff youmust have no felony convictions, be 21 years ofage, be a resident of the county, and be a certifiedpeace officer or successfully complete the IowaLaw Enforcement Academy training with one-yearof taking office.

Also, the Academy requires completion of psychological testing and has a goodmoral character.I meet these requirements.

In addition, I would like the citizens to know that I look at my campaign as acampaign representing all the citizens of Mitchell County and look forward to havingthe opportunity to represent our county well throughout North Iowa.

I also think it is important for people to know that I was born and raised inMitchell County growing up in St. Ansgar.

I remember well the athletic competition between St. Ansgar, Osage and Riceville.This competition created memories that have lasted a lifetime.

This competition is great for our young people and clearly needs to continue but itbelongs on our basketball courts, football fields and baseball and softball diamondsnot in the area of politics and law enforcement.

Elect the best candidate for the position and the one with the experience to getthe job done.

Please support me for the office of Sheriff.I began my law enforcement career in 1987.I became a certified peace officer from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in

1988.I served the community of Forest City, Iowa for approximately 13 years.In 1990, I was assigned to the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force and assisted

area agencies in developing drug cases.From 1995 until 2000, I held the rank of Lieutenant with the Forest City Police

Department.In May of 2000, I accepted a deputy sheriff’s position in Mitchell County.

I have received training from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Division ofNarcotics Enforcement, US Drug Enforcement Agency, the US Attorney’s Office, theUnited States Air Force and many other law enforcement and government agencies.

I am currently a state-certified EMT-B and I am the firearms instructor for theSheriff’s Office.As the sheriff’s office moves forward, I would like to focus on the areas of trainingand technology.In order to continually provide a professional service, the deputies need to maintaina high-level of training, training in the areas of crimes against children, domesticviolence, drug interdiction and investigations, computer crimes and in the areas ofmental health and the ability to identify and support special needs individuals.

The sheriff’s office also needs to maintain its technology program and forensicwork that is vital to solving many crimes that are committed today. Identity theft andcrimes against children are often times committed on the computer and to maintainthese programs is vital to protecting the citizens of Mitchell County.

As the county and the sheriff’s office moves forward, undoubtedly new challengeswill arise.These challenges will be met and as we meet these challenges, we also will not losesight of the basic function of law enforcement and that is to continue to meet theneeds of all the citizens of Mitchell County.

As a career law enforcement officer, I have the experience, knowledge and desireto continue to serve the people of Mitchell County.

The office of sheriff is not like any other job. This job requires a 24-hour a day, 7day a week commitment, a commitment I have demonstrated over the past 25 years Ihave served in law enforcement.

This career is about the ability to solve problems, the ability to work with other lawenforcement agencies and most importantly, to have a positive impact on the lives ofpeople that I serve.

Finally, I want to again thank everyone that, to this point in my campaign, hassupported me and encouraged me.
