Our spirit.

sometimes get the impression that the world is being controlled bythe most modern technology in rapid acceleration and is even

For example the meaning of a friendship or the uniqueness of aspecial person. We desperately need things again, that give us back
the most valuable thing in life: our time. time to reflect, to readand enjoy. time for the essentials.

I Promessi Sposi
Where once marlene dietrich earlier performed, exclusivestars will once again take the stage from the start of the win-ter season with the new event series „in Concert@Badrutt’sPalace“, in the shimmering grand hotel in st. moritz. the
opening performance will be made on 8th december 2012by massimiliano Finazzer Flory and the performers of the
„teatro alla scala“ from milan with „i Promessi sposi“by Alessandro manzoni. the historical novel is understood
to be the most significant classical italian literatureafter dantes divine comedy.
the concert series „in Concert@Badrutt’s Palace“starts with a world class performance of „i Promessi
sposi“ that will be seen in switzerland for the firsttime. this will be an absolute highlight particularlyfor the italian guests. manzoni‘s work, which takesplace in milan during the spanish reign in the year
1628, influenced italy’s literature in a similar way tothat of goethe’s „Faust“ in german speaking
countries.
the writer umberto Eco is reported to have said:„i love this novel, because i was lucky enough to read
it for the first time, before i was tortured with it inschool.“ massimiliano Finazzer Flory is combining
the, very faithful to the original, interpretation of themasterpiece in the «Embassy Ballroom» of the
Badrutt’s Palace hotel, with discerning literature fromthe most important chapter of the italian compulsory
reading, breath-taking ballet-choreography and classicalmusic from giuseppe verdi, luciano Berio and nino
Rota. he will be supported on stage by the primaballerina gilda gelati as well as the string quartet of
the „teatro alla scala“ from milan.

oft recht erfinderische Art.

Tierischer Notvorrat

The greatest and hardest of all survival practices takes place one winter after another inisolation in the snow and ice covered mountain landscapes. Here relentless laws apply. Forthe purposes of maintaining healthy species, sick and weak individuals do not survive;they are sacrificed to the food chain. Silent death, starvation and freezing to death on theone hand; a dogged, in part ingenious and also successful fight for survival on the otherhand. The strategies for persevering in such balancing acts between life and death are:saving energy, insulating the body, building up stocks and adapting the way of life. In factnature does not leave its healthy creatures to play this horrible poker game without theirability to protect themselves. Some mammals occasionally retreat for short periods of dor-mancy into a safe shelter (for example the squirrel in his nest or the badger in his sett).Others go into complete hibernation in a burrow or tree hollow (for example groundhog, edible dormouse or hazel dormouse). Ectothermic animals on the other hand (amphibi-ans and reptiles) simply fall into a – tricking all difficulties - torpor. Finally migratorybirds again solve the problem differently: they fly away to warmer climates during theinhospitable season. All of the rest – whether bird or mammal – brave the rigours of thecold season. And they do it in the most varied, often very ingenious ways.
Animal emergency stocksFood depots are not the invention of mountaineers and soldiers; several kinds of creature havealways prudently stored food supplies in autumn, which they hide in „typical“ places; the squir-rel- beechnuts and hazelnuts, the spotted nutcracker- pine seeds. that which is not found in win-ter, contributes to the propagation of these plants. the large vegetarians, above all deer and cha-mois, quite literally eat themselves fat, insulating emergency supplies that amount to up to onefifth of their body weight. small animals on the other hand – for reasons of proportions – cannotafford such fat reserves. the own body „emergency rations“ of a snow grouse for example, wouldnot last for two days. it must therefore be able to keep filling its crop. Furthermore nature hasgiven our wild chickens the ability to recognise and favour foods rich in protein and sugar, whe-reby the small food quantity has an increased nutritional value by having better quality.
Icy nurserythe feeding habits quite considerably determine how a species spends its winter. Which birdsmigrate for example, is determined less by their sensitivity to the cold, but rather more by theirdemands for food. therefore thrushes, which are dependent on earthworms, would have nochance of survival in the ice and snow. granivores such as bramblings and bullfinches are in thatrespect better off. indeed even among the insect eaters there are specialists in the cold, that canhold out in the mountain woods, because they have specialised themselves into eating torporbeetles and larvae in the cracks of the bark; for example tits and especially the nuthatch or tree-creeper.
Larger ones have the advantagesmaller bodies have – according to the laws of physics – in relation, a greater surface area thanlarger bodies. this principle also applies to animal bodies. therefore larger animals have a bet-ter heat retention than smaller ones, and therefore small animals such as martens and squirrelshave greater insulation problems. Furthermore they can’t have a coat as heavy as deer or ibex, because otherwise they would be too greatly limited in their ability to move freely. thereforenature has arranged that in higher regions or northern latitudes, native examples of a species –for example deer or boar – are larger than their relative species in lower regions or warmerclimes. the heat loss from the surface of the body is not only related to the size of the body, butalso dependant on the shape of the body and exposed parts. that which is further away from thebody, cools quicker, for example ears, tail and legs. therefore in the higher regions, the nativenorthern hare and the arctic fox living in the Antarctic have got smaller ears than their relatives, the field hare and the red fox.
Hairy „Double glazing“in the age of greater awareness for energy, we humans have rediscovered insulation and are con-vinced of many things about it. But insulation is an ancient, proven principle of nature. howelse would it be possible for hooved game to avoid suffering when it gets half snowed in duringa snowstorm while it is sleeping, or that ibex can, even during the bitterest of cold spells, liedown to rest on the windiest of ledges and crests? such insulation protection makes it possiblefor the fur coat or feather plumage, apart from the layer of fat under the skin, to act as a sort ofinner window, or in modern terms, double glazing. the static air layer caught in the coat delaysthe heat exchange in fact, to such an efficient degree, that temperature differences between theinner body and the outside world can be maintained at over fifty degrees Celsius. that is why itis no accident that modern insulation materials display similar characteristics to the soft under-coat beneath the stiff guard hair and respectively the fluffy down layer under the contour feat-hers.
„Snow-shoes“ and „camouflage“Whereas grotesquely, for mice that remain active under the protecting and insulating snow cove-ring, a winter with little snow is more dangerous, the deep snow makes life particularly difficultfor the large mammals and ground birds. however nature has also given them help in this situa-tion. While the deer with its small hooves is not well adapted to deep snow, the chamois recog-nises it has to spread its toes before setting down. the northern hare achieves a similar effectwith the stiff hairs sticking out between the toes of its hind feet. And even the name of the grou-se in german, ‘Raufusshuhn’ (wood grouse, black grouse, snow grouse and hazel grouse), tellsyou that they wear a kind of snow shoe, in that their toes are spread apart by horny plates. thesnow itself can indirectly turn into a danger; as it makes prey more visible to its pursuers, on theground and from the air (eagles). three very shrewd animals therefore pull a „camouflage“ overthemselves: stoat, northern hare and snow grouse wear a white camouflage coat in winter. thatcan however also be “a complete flop”, as if the change in colour has already taken place, butthe snow takes its time in coming....

Klassisches Design frisch interpretiert
« luxury and driving fun in a new dimension:the worldwide first suv with a lightweight

t R u E v A l u E
After more than forty years of the «Range Rover» success story, the expectations for the
fourth generation are high. This is why the development must have been exhausting. In
such cases it is a question of preserving the legend and at the same time not disappointing
the fastidious target group. But the result is a modern Range Rover, with the unmatched
quality of its unique ancestry. The wide front grill and the characteristic look of the head-
lamps still impress. Only if you look closely you can recognise the new silhouette. A bit
rounder, flattened towards the rear. Aerodynamic and so to speak fine, with the new floa-
ting roof, but still typically brawny thanks to the clamshell hood. The cockpit, which has
been designed with great attention to detail, radiates tranquillity. This has been achieved,
because 50% of the controls and buttons have disappeared. Thus there is nothing left that
could distract the eye. The functionality is not the only thing that dominates, but also abo-
ve all the luxury. Leather, wood and metal elements impress! With regard to the dynamics,
the all-new Range Rover is a revelation! For after admiring it from outside and getting
into the passenger compartment, driving it is unparalleled: The most powerful Range
Rover of all time strengthens its position as a luxury SUV.
newly developed from the ground up, the top model of the British 4x4-specialists completelyre-defines the standards of the suv luxury class. thus the new Range Rover is for example, the worldwide first suv with a light fully aluminium monocoque bodywork, which has aparticularly positive effect on efficiency and emissions. the joints on the Range Rover-aluminium body are thereby riveted and glued – a procedure developed in the aero- andspace- travel industry, and adapted by Jaguar land-Rover for automobile purposes. A furtherimportant innovative element of the new Range Rover is its chassis architecture in lightweightconstruction. the chassis, largely made out of light aluminium elements, is combined with anadjustable all round air suspension, which offers useful comfort both on and off-road. Apartfrom the lightweight chassis, highly developed electronic assisters contribute a great deal tothe optimised driving dynamics. to mention here are the modern electronic power steering, the active slope compensation „dynamic Response“ integrated in Range Rover for the firsttime and the adaptive driving dynamics control „Adaptive dynamics“.
„Terrain Response 2“ now has an „Auto“-mode
the unmatched talent of Range Rover for coping with every terrain and its extreme composureis based on, amongst other things, the newest development stage of the land Rover created„terrain Response“ system: „terrain Response 2“ is celebrating its premier in the new RangeRover. For the first time a revolutionary „Auto“-mode has been implemented here, which mana-ges entirely without any further intervention by the driver. innovative and superior technicshowever only form part of the fascination of the Range Rover. Equally important for manyowners is the incomparable atmosphere emitted by the interior. Pampering luxury and uncom-promising comfort are coupled here with exquisite materials, perfect hand-crafted finishing andan equally stylish, as it is fastidious, modern design.
Classical design freshly interpreted
in the new model generation now being presented, the interior experience of the Range Roveris not only even more noble and sophisticated, but also more spacious: that opens up an extra118 millimetres of legroom in front of the rear seats. Furthermore the newly designed middleconsole and the optimised layout in the interior catch the eye. in addition there is an increasedchoice in equipment details emphasising comfort and luxury, such as new audio systems fromthe specialists meridian, whereby the top model offers no less than 1700 watts and 29 loudspea-kers, including a subwoofer. For maximum comfort, further features such as the electric opera-tion of the top and bottom parts of the rear tailgate, doors with assisted closing, various coolercompartments or the further developed adaptive cruise control “ACC”, that now remains ope-rational in queueing or even stationary traffic. to some extent, as the crowning glory, the Ran-ge Rover presents its striking bodywork design in a modern form. the fresh interpretation of theclassic design lines to not represent anything more or less than the boldly applied evolution ofthe iconic Range Rover design language. Furthermore it signals the softly maintained, modernappearance, under the skin of which the Range Rover hides a wealth of technical innovations. With an overall length of just under five metres, the new development covers about the samesurface area as the previous model. A clear difference is however the smoothed and more aero-dynamic profile with the 20 millimetre lower roofline in the entry mode. With its streamlinedand rounded profile, the new model presents itself as the most aerodynamic Range Rover ofall time.
in the front view of the Range Rover the impression of strength dominates - thanks to theimpressive, wide cooler grill and distinctive headlamps complete with lEd light elements.indeed here too there are various stylish gimmicks adding to the streamlining, such as the slightsloping of the grill, the much more rounded corners of the bodywork or the dynamically leaningA-posts. What is more, the eye is also drawn to the side air vents on the new model. they runfrom the wings into the front doors and display a very innovative interpretation of this well-known styling solution. noble accents are added to this with the almost completely flush, fittedside glass or the covering on the roof posts in highly polished black.
cofano a conchiglia.
New Range Rover è un vera rivoluzione.

Upper Engadin Hospital in Samedan – from an isolation unitto the most modern central hospital in the Alps
The origins of the organisedhealthcare system in the Upper Engadin
Right up to the end of the 19th century, municipalities in the upper Engadinehad their own “isolation units” or local hospitals where they could treat andlook after their sick inhabitants. however, more medical advances and thegrowing population in the upper Engadin also meant that the public health-care system still had to be developed further. A group of foresighted andinnovative residents developed the idea of replacing the municipal isolationunits with a central regional hospital. in spite of political resistance and highcosts, the first district hospital in the upper Engadin was opened in same-dan in 1895. dr O. Bernhard, the founder of heliotherapy in the upperEngadin, was chosen as the hospital’s first doctor.
Surgical visionaries at Upper Engadin Hospital
Our tradition of using world-renowned guest doctors as consultants is stillbeing maintained. the doctors who have worked at upper Engadin hospi-tal include Prof F. sauerbruch, one of the most important and most influen-tial surgeons in the first half of the 20th century, and in 1996 Prof m. deBaky,an American heart surgeon who perfected, for example, the heart-lungmachine and was involved in the development of surgical procedures forartificial hearts.
Many visitors are therefore amazed when they now takea look behind the scenes at the hospital
the 24-hour emergency centre deals with both special surgical and medi-cal cases. the intensive care unit is able to competently treat extremelycomplex cases at all times. For some time now, the Radiology departmentin the hospital has only been using medical imaging (Ct) with a third ofthe normal radiation dosage, but with the same image quality which ishighly beneficial for patients. the Radiology department was presentedwith the “swiss Quality Award 2012”, in the category of “Patient safety”,for this innovation.
Upper Engadine Hospital now a highlymodern facility with university cooperation
since the beginning of 2012, upper Engadin hospital has been providingorthopaedic treatment, i.e. surgery of the musculoskeletal system, 24-hoursa day, 365 days a year, in close cooperation with Basel university hospital.this means that patients receive first-class university support in these medi-cal disciplines at the hospital, and in a familiy atmosphere.
however, thanks to close cooperation with the grisons Cantonal hospitaland Zurich university hospital, department of internal medicine with itssub-specialties has also acquired a leading role in south grisons that isrecognised far beyond the region’s borders.
High quality demands in all areas
the maxim of upper Engadin hospital is “We take care of you!”. Qualityand the maximum willingness to serve are values to which the hospital iscommitted. this credo is practised daily with the highest quality demandsfor patients and as a challenge for every employee. the focus here is alwayson patients as people.
Visionari chirurgici all’ Ospedale Alta Engadina

the Engadin nutcake is basically made from dough anda filling with walnuts. the basis for the dough is flakes of butter,in Romansh «Fuatscha grassa». the cake does not originate fromEngadin as one might think. in the dry Engadin climate walnutsdon't grow, they come from the southern fields of Europe wherewalnuts originate from. in southern France, in the area around
toulouse «gateau aux noix» was produced in bakeries, which wereeventually brought back home by immigrants from Engadin.
in northern italy, the nutcake existed and was offeredin certain houses as a speciality. Without any doubt the recipefor the Engadin nutcake was brought back home by emigrated
confectioners. they brought the nuts with them and their mothersand grandmothers took hold of the idea and mixed it with typical
Engadin products such as milk, butter, sugar, honey and flour.this is how the ‘Bündner‘ or flat Engadin nutcake resulted.
today this is one of the most famous specialitiesin the region.

Chiming into the Future –Combining design and mechanical innovation.
Pictures & text: ulysse nardin
Futuristic in design, stealth in performance is the new sonata streamline. inspired by the aerodynamic aesthetic of superyachts, the sonata streamlinereveals a strong and streamlined case with two available dial versions for a 2012 introduction that is powerfully masculine.
the case, exquisitely fashioned from titanium, presents one option paired with ceramic – a material unmatched in durability –and gold, and the other with 18-karat rose gold. the essence of ocean navigation is emulated in the design of the sonata’s two dial versions.
the modern appearance of the sleek case structure is reinforced by the strong geometrical detailing on both dial executions.
Accompanying the sonata’s distinctive design traits is its exacting performance. A mechanical instrument, the sonata streamline is run by a patentedself-winding manufacture caliber – a caliber developed in-house over the course of seven years by ulysse nardin visionaries, engineers and technicians
that presents unprecedented precision and multiple functions.
Features of equal importance include the movement’s merging of the melodic, “chime” alarm setting showing a sub-dial at 2 o’clock that indicatesthe hour and minute alarm setting with a countdown indicator positioned above 10 o’clock. the countdown indicator is based on a 24-hours mechanism,
allowing the timepiece alarm to be set 24 hours ahead. it calculates the time left on a 24-hour scale until the alarm chimes. this permits easy readingof whether the alarm is set for a.m. or p.m., with the hand at 9 o’clock denoting whether or not the alarm is activated.
meeting the ever increasing desire of ladiesto combine the mechanics of time with jewelry.

this most practical mechanical dual time system combines a patented instant time zone adjustment with an elegantly crafted timepiece.the dual time lady can be adjusted to any different local time without the need to remove the watch off the wrist. the hour hand adjustsforward or backward by pressing pusher plus (+) or minus (-). the large date display is synchronized with the hour hand adjusters and
the date moves automatically forward or backward when adjustments are made over midnight.
With the oversized small seconds at 6 o’clock decorated with 12 diamonds, the dual time lady is the perfect combination of both styleand substance. the diamond hour markers as well as the diamond-set roman figures serve to enhance the beauty of the mother of pearl dial.
Protected by a sapphire exhibition case back, the diamond-set rotor of the gold execution sparkles gracefully, all the while fulfillingits duty in winding the mechanism.
With a broad spectrum of choices including straps in satin, alligator or galusha, the dual time lady owner can choose to emphasizethe charm of the delicately designed dials in any manner of fashion. the dual time lady with its unique dual time system with a 24-hour
indicator is a tribute to those ladies who desire to adorn themselves with a mechanical jewel combined with the highest aesthetic.

An oriental oasis at 1800 metres
today everybody is accustomed to a more or less modern wallpaper, which wasnot yet the case 250 years ago.
Wallpaper appeared in England at the same time as the newly created middleclasses. these big industrialists were financially very stable; they could at leastkeep pace with the wooden panelled walls and the heavy woven tapestries of thearistocrats, which had been passed down over hundreds of years. As a compari-son: At the time of ludwig Xivth it was very possible, that a row of 14 wallpa-pers of the gobelin type reached the value of a warship.
Painted decoration was initially a trompe-l’oeil, which means an unrealistic pain-ting, put together from grotesque faces from italian renaissance, Pompeian arabes-que or Chinese drawings. later it developed into a row of pictures that sometimestold a story and allowed the observer to immerse themselves into a dream world.
so it came to be that a Basel homeowner with a view of the Rhein, had his viewof the water blocked by new buildings, whereupon he had a panorama of the Rhô-ne in lyon papered onto the wall. the expression ‘Panorama’ meant ‘landscape’,in the technical language of the wallpaper makers of the 19th century. these wereprinted views on paper lengths, which were up to 16 metres long and could reach32 lengths. intended to be lounge decoration, the wallpapers were glued directlyonto the wall, whereby a rough fabric served as the base. the landscape stretchedout at eye level, so that the highest element in the picture never went over 2.2metres high and the sky and clouds could merge directly into the ceiling.
the decoration was always tailored to fit the architecture of the room and themotifs flowed smoothly around the doors and windows seamlessly, or else itrepeated itself and stretched a landscape unendingly.
the original template for the wallpaper Eldorado in «le Restaurant» of theBadrutt’s Palace hotel was produced in 1849 by the ‘Jean Zuber and Cie’ factoryin Rixheim by mulhouse in Alsace. the exceptional talent of the Zuber factorydisplayed itself in the portrayal of the sky: in order to give the landscape thenecessary depth, the tempera colours, an oil-water mix, run from sky-blue intobeige, in a straight line, put together by the colourists.
the model Eldorado is the work of three artists: Eugène Ehrmann, the chemistthat understood how to mix the aniline based colours, georges Zipélius, a flowerspecialist and responsible for the ornaments, and Joseph Fuchs, the talented crea-tor of the portrayed landscape.
Because of the high demand, this panorama underwent continually renewed pro-duction. the Eldorado in Badrutt’s Palace hotel probably originated from a newproduction from 1904 and was later worked into «le Restaurant» built in 1912.
the choice of name seems strange: the archive of the Zuber factory tells us thatthe Eldorado is a portrayal of the four continents. the town represented is proba-bly vera Cruz in south America, the lake is possibly a European water south ofthe Alps, the architecture of the tower is aimed at the Bosporus, at the entranceto Asia and the Pyramids and sphinx lie on the threshold to Africa. On closerinspection one finds the name of the artist on the stone under the classic column,in mirrored script and the year of origin 1849.
Eldorado is an idealistic portrayal of the world, a garden of Eden, where man isonly present through his work, and not through his being. And if the real Eldorado, the land of treasures, instead of this portrayal, could be natural.
«Le Restaurant»offers the ideal setting for an elegant
and exquisite dinner in a classical ambience. French haute cuisine, international specialities of the highest quality,
a dignified atmosphere and the exclusive service make «Le Restaurant»into a perfect place for a romantic candlelight-dinner
and a pompous gala-dinner.
The exclusive flair guarantees unforgettable eveningswith selected specialties, that are prepared
and served with every attention to detail. Live music during dinner provides a stylish musical
background to the delicacies presented.

in our times, philanthropy and investment are merging to create powerful socialchange. While hard economic and social difficulties plague certain areas of the glo-be, sustainable solutions exist that include economic growth, innovation and entre-preneurial solutions. Both Beyond Capital Fund (“BCF”) and Badrutt’s Palace hotelare leading the charge in support of this innovative space.
socially minded business models can assist in the alleviation of poverty by provi-ding innovative solutions (including healthcare, clean water and energy), in turnincreasing economic growth, innovation, and entrepreneurial activity in the regionsand communities in which they operate.
Entrepreneurs Eva and hooman Yazhari, founded Beyond Capital Fund (“BCF”),which is a foundation dedicated to improving the lives of people living below thepoverty line, through social impact investments. BCF’s founders serve as an exam-ple of how individuals and families with business backgrounds and strong networkscan positively impact economically and socially disadvantaged members of theircommunities and the world.
BCF specifically focuses on funding early-stage, financially sustainable businessesin the water, energy, sanitation and healthcare sectors, however there are many moreopportunities beyond this scope. simply supporting companies in fast growing eco-nomies with expanding infrastructure, mobile presence and financial sector growthcan make an impact. Furthermore, ensuring that a company institutes ethical busi-ness practices and does not engage in corruption can have another level of societalimpact.
starting with the premise that environmental, social and financial sustainability areeach necessary for a society to function well and with justice, BCF invests into soci-al businesses rather than giving its capital away. that way, investees are focused onfinding a way to sustain their activities for the long term and BCF gets its capitalback and re-invests it.
there is a global movement of social business ventures springing up around theworld, creating new and innovative solutions to the world’s problems. in addition tofinancial returns, these businesses are achieving measurable social and environmen-tal returns. BCF’s current investment portfolio contains four investments: all com-panies providing goods and services in an affordable manner to populations livingon less than $4.00 a day.
An example is BCF’s first investment in E-health Point, a healthcare company wor-king with the rural poor in Punjab, india. the company addresses the lack of traineddoctors in remote villages by using teleconferencing to conduct medical consultati-ons with doctors located in metropolitan areas. this method keeps costs down (atypical consultation is $1.00) and makes professional healthcare affordable to thosewho otherwise would not be able to meet its costs. E-health Point also provideslocal families with clean water at its clinics at a low price point. despite the low costof the consultations and water to the end user, E-health Point is able to generate asolid profit on its sales, making its own operations sustainable and scalable. EachE-health Point cluster serves roughly 20,000 people per day.
One key challenge is ensuring that capital will be returned and possibly recycled intonew ideas. Company and market analysis is an important part of the sustainableinvestment process and investors should tap into the right resources in their investi-gation. Further, social enterprises need more than just money. not only are Eva andhooman Yazhari investing capital, they are investing know-how from their net-works.
Community building is another important component that BCF take seriously. inmarch 2013, BCF is partnering with Badrutt’s Palace hotel and J.P. morgan, brin-ging together top quality social enterprises, philanthropists and investors who appre-ciate the value of using the skill sets of running a private enterprise to deliver sustai-nable market driven benefits to philanthropy. the event will feature a series ofroundtables in an intimate and private setting and aim to dive deep into the opportu-nities and challenges this industry presents.
if you are interested in attending, please contact Badrutt’s Palace hotel(telephone: +41 (0)81 837 2653).
