THANK YOU! !Thank YOU Epworth! Our 28th Annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper sponsored by Epworth’s SWAT Student Ministries raised $1070 for our Youth Summer Missions. The ongoing support by Epworth of our children and youth is quite phenomenal...thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Denny and I want to thank everyone who has sent cards, brought meals, and held us in their prayers after I broke my foot last month. Recovery has been slow but steady, and I am experiencing more and more independence with each passing day. You all have been a major part of this recovery, and we thank you with all our hearts!

I thank my God every time I remember you! Philippians 1:3

BJ Brengartner

Dear Epworth family,

Since my recent surgery, I so much appreciated all the cards, phone calls, pastoral visits, and especially each and every prayer. Also, many thanks to those who made and brought in meals.

Gratefully,Ruth Ann Horlick

Running Late?! Don’t forget to call!

REMINDER--For security reasons, the Central Avenue door is locked at 8:00 PM, Monday through Thursday, unless there is an all church event. If you will be coming to your meeting after 8:00 PM, please make prior arrangements for someone to let you in.

Thank you for the outpouring of love and support at the passing of my mother, Marilyn Williams. Your many cards and notes remind me of how blessed I am to have been to be part of the Epworth family.

I am grateful as well to Pastor Bob for preaching for me at Woodville UMC, so that I could be with my family for mom’s memorial service, and for his and Pastor Keith’s visits to Mom in her final days. Even more, though, I am grateful for all the ways you supported me through the most difficult days of Mom’s illness and for how hard you worked to make Mom feel loved and needed when she was still able to attend church but was struggling with dementia.

By creatively including her in so many ways, you helped her to “feel like a person,” as she used to say.

The cards, notes, and visits she continued to receive even after she no longer was aware of them comforted us and assured us that she had not been forgotten.

You will always have a special place not only in my heart, but in the hearts of my family. Grace and Peace –Carol Williams-Young

Please Help Prevent Auto Break-insThieves are always on the prowl as they look into cars in parking lots for cell phones, briefcases, purses, packages, GPSs...actually anything of value.

They break a window, grab the item(s), and they’re off with your stuff. No place is immune to break-ins. Stores and malls are favorites for thieves, but church and office parking lots are having increased auto break-ins. Be sure no items are lying on your seats or car floor.

NEW Scripture by Heart Class!!Maybe in your exploration of spiritual gifts this month, you’ve learned your gifts include Creative Communication, Encouragement, Evangelism, Word of Knowledge, or Teaching. Or maybe you simply have a passion for the Word of God and are looking for a new way to learn it and convey it to others. Scripture by Heart is for you!

There are many different ways to learn scripture. We’ll work with all of them, and you just pick the methods that work best with your learning style. The most important part is prayerfully allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you.

Our next Scripture by Heart class takes place Saturday, April 12 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. If you have questions or would like to sign up for the class, contact Beth Irwin at [email protected] or 419.531.4236.

If you have a short scripture that is close to your heart and would like to use it for practice during class, by all means, bring it with you.

Friendly Faces Wantedfor Monthly Vesper Services

Lay servants from Epworth United Methodist Church have been leading Vespers worship services at Sunset House on Indian Road for several years, and we’ve recently expanded the ministry to Kingston Residence of Sylvania and Swan Creek Retirement Community off of Reynolds Road.

Vesper services include a short message, familiar hymns, readings and prayer. They are about 30 minutes long but provide a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and bring God’s message to the community. What can you do?

• Be a welcoming presence and spend time with the residents of Swan Creek, Kingston, and Sunset House

• Read Scripture• Provide Special Music or share another gift you have• Epworth youth and children are welcome – we’d

love to see you!

If you have been considering participating, you can jump in any time…or attend a few just for the experience.

Services take place on the first Thursday of every month at 4:00 PM at Sunset House; the third Thursday of every month at 2:00 PM at Kingston; and third Sundays of every other month at 2:30 PM at Swan Creek Retirement Village.

The next Vespers service at Swan Creek will be Easter Sunday, April 20. Swan Creek’s Chaplain Bill Barnard will preside, but members of Epworth will provide additional support. Anyone is welcome to join in!

If you would like to be a part of any of these Vespers services, contact Beth Irwin at [email protected] or 419.531.4236.

NURSERY & TODDLER• Childcare is available at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in the nursery• Sing-n-Worship at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in Room 110 - We have moved across the hall to a larger

room. Now we have plenty of space to learn and play and grow. Our toddlers learn from lessons geared to two year olds, which let them know how much we love them and how much God loves them.

PRE-SCHOOL• Play-N-Worship at 9:45 and 11:00 in Rooms 112 & 114 - Preschool children ages 3-5 (not yet in

kindergarten) are invited to join us Sunday morning in rooms 112 & 114 for Play-N-Worship. Each month the children will explore a new Bible Point through stories, songs, and play. The children will also memorize a Bible verse, learn an action prayer, and collect a Pennies for Jesus offering to buy children’s Bibles to send with our mission teams.

ELEMENTARY• Children, Grades K-5 at 9:45 - In APRIL we will be learning about HUMILITY: putting others first by

giving up what we think we deserve. Our Learn to Serve Mission Project will be collecting money for children in Haiti, so they can receive the therapy and support that they need. On Easter Sunday, we will have special activities in the Kingdom, including an egg hunt, crafts, movies, and stories.

• Sixth Grade S.L.A.M. at 9:45 in Room 206 (second floor in the Kingdom hallway)• Youth Donuts and the Bible at 9:45 - Junior High in Room 003 at the far end of the Family Life Center;

Senior High in Room 215. • Children, Grades K-3 at 11:00 WOW (Worship Our Way) in Room 205 - This class meets in Bible

Time Players (Room 205) directly following the Pastor’s Children’s Moment. Each week the children will learn about God’s love through age-appropriate lessons packed with hands-on learning through praise, worship, and prayer. On Easter Sunday, we will have special activities, crafts, movies, and stories.

• Children, Grade 4 and up at 11:00 (“B’Tween Me & God”) - We invite kids grade 4 and up to join us in the sanctuary and worship. Sit together with a group of friends or join your family. Ask an usher for the special green “B’Tween Me & God” bulletin inserts created just for you each week. These sheets are filled with questions and insights to help engage you in worship. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers, and you don’t even need to turn these in to anyone at the end of the day because worship is B’Tween you and God!

ADULT• Adult Bible Study at 9:45 in Room 214 - We will be studying a seven part series entitled “The Three

Faiths of Jerusalem”. We are considering: “Do these religions, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim, have points of view in common? What are their differences? What can they show us about God?” Each session begins with a DVD presentation from the Day of Discovery series followed by discussion of the points made in the presentation. Grab a cup of coffee and join the lively discussions as together we develop a deeper understanding of the three faiths. Meet new friends on your journey. Know that you will be welcomed!

• Friends in Faith at 9:45 in Room 213 - Come study with us as we discuss The Miracles of Jesus. We will read the scriptures and discuss a different miracle each week. No homework or advance preparation needed. Join us any time!

• Coffee and Conversation at 9:45 in Room 020 - Please join us as we discuss Renting Lacy: A Story of America’s Prostituted Children by Linda Smith and Cindy Coloma. Please feel free to join us.

• Bible Study at 9:45 in the Library (lower level by Central Avenue door) - Kyle Idleman’s riveting new study, Gods at War, properly notes that Christians and the church correctly emphasize the need to identify and eradicate sin. In this new series, Idleman challenges our presumptions about sin by suggesting that all sin derives from the same source - idolatry. While we don’t see many “graven images” around today, Idleman argues that there are still countless gods passionately at war for the throne of our hearts. Please join us as we learn how seekers, non-Christians, and life-long Christians alike will all be moved to grow their relationship with Christ.

• Sermon Notes at 11:00 in Room 214 - We are participating in the Lenten study The Way by Adam Hamilton. Please feel free to join us.Ep

Deeper into the Word Bible StudyLed by Scott LeppalaCome and join us Sundays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM for “Deeper into the Word” Bible study. We will be using the Bible as our text book, and there will be plenty of time for discussion as we delve into its pages and ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten our eyes and warm our hearts to the glorious truths God has given to us throughout the Bible. (Handouts will also be provided).

We will also be looking at the unfolding of God’s story through the lives of many different people such as Adam & Eve, Noah, Abraham & Sarah, Hagar, Jacob, Joseph, and a host of others, and what their lives can teach us about God and ourselves. But, we will also be challenged by examining those issues that we, as Christians, face in the world today concerning our own faith and the world views that stand in contrast to the truth of God’s Word.

So come join us in the Library as we dig deeper into the Word and continue to learn and grow together as God gives us the opportunities. Sign up by e-mailing Ruth Ann at [email protected] or call the church office at 419.531.4236.

Chrysalis Flight for Girls Coming in JuneEmmaus Walks and Chrysalis Flights are spiritual retreats, opportunities for faith exploration and renewal, and for taking a closer look at the servanthood of Jesus.

These Walks and Flights help individuals grow closer to Jesus and become disciples and servants within the church.

Though you participate as a group, the experience is still personal and unique for everyone. Emmaus Walks are for adults and Chrysalis Flights are for teens 15 to 19.

There’s a Chrysalis Flight for Girls June 20-22. All Chrysalis Flights are at Maumee United Methodist Church at 405 Sackett Street in Maumee. Registration and sponsorship forms are available in the church office. Prayerfully consider sponsoring a teen in your life.

The next Women’s Walk to Emmaus - #81 – will be right here at Epworth United Methodist Church from July 10-13, and the Reunion Gathering will be July 19.

To learn more, contact Beth Irwin at [email protected] or Pastor Marilynn Schroeder at [email protected], or at 419.531.4236. You can also visit the website of the Northwest Ohio Emmaus Community at nwoemmaus.com.

And for those who have already participated in a Walk or Flight, volunteers are always appreciated at future events. Sign-up forms are available online!

Healing and Wholeness Service

The May Service of Healing and Wholeness will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 7:00 PM in the Webb Chapel. Janelle Metzger, the Executive Director of Water for Ishmael, will be our speaker. Janelle spent seven years living in the Middle East with her husband and four children in the 90s. After returning to Toledo, the Metzger family joined a team of people in Toledo who were passionate about sharing the Love of Christ with and helping internationals in the Toledo area. Water for Ishmael was born out of this team’s fervent prayers.

Come to hear Janelle’s moving testimony to the power of God’s healing and restoring love as experienced by the unique community served by Water for Ishmael. You may come to the service to pray for others, to have the community pray for your special needs, or to pray for the hurt and brokenness in the community and the world. Pastor Luke will lead in the healing prayers and preside for the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Cecil Baughman will provide special music and accompany the service. Members of the Healing Ministry Team are Beth Irwin, Dolli Darah, Penny McCartney, B.J. Brengartner, Vicki Smith and Teri Swolsky.

St. Paul’s MinistryEpworth UMC has had a long-standing commitment to St. Paul’s and the community it serves. One form of support is through providing and serving the first Saturday of the month’s noon meal.

Groups, or individuals, are invited to sign up for a Saturday, and then coordinate what will be purchased, prepared, and served at St. Paul’s for that day. The typical number served at St. Paul’s is 100, with well over 1,300 meals provided in 2013 through this ministry.

There are 2014 dates are still available! Jennie Vancil (personal information removed) coordinates these meals and will gladly speak to you or your group about serving at St. Paul’s. Thank you if you, and/or your group, have served a meal at St. Paul’s in the past. Please consider supporting this ministry in 2014 and beyond.

Understanding the Puzzle of the Autism Spectrum

Epworth Health MinistriesApril is National Autism Awareness Month. According to a March 2014 report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 2000 and 2010 the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder jumped from 1 in 166 children to 1 in 68. Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism. Researchers can attribute improvement in diagnostic techniques to only a fraction of the increase.

There are many “types” of autism, and professionals will refer to them as “autism spectrum” disorders. This includes autism, high-functioning autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). Each has different indicators but many overlap, and not all signs and symptoms are present for every child.

Autism spectrum symptoms can include social interaction difficulties, communication challenges, and repetitive behaviors. Symptoms and severity vary widely. Toddlers and preschoolers may have trouble interpreting facial expressions and older children with autism may not realize that others have thoughts and feelings different from their own. They may have trouble regulating their emotions, and may experience outbursts and aggressive behavior. Repetitive behaviors can include pacing, twirling, arranging and rearranging objects, and they can show extreme depth of knowledge about one subject, such as cars, a baseball team, or outer space.

Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism (HFA) are terms sometimes used interchangeably. The primary difference between the two, according to the advocacy organization Autism Speaks, is that early in development, a child with

HFA will have delayed language skills. Children with Asperger Syndrome have typical language development and above-average vocabulary. Other signs of Asperger Syndrome (besides those mentioned above) include:

• Improper or few social interactions; inability to read social cues in others; doesn’t understand “personal space”

• Repetitive speech or unusual speech patterns

• Tendency to discuss self rather than others

• Inability to understand issues or phrases seen as “common sense” by others

• Lack of eye contact or reciprocal conversation

• One-sided conversations

Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) is a newer diagnosis category. It is applied to those who are diagnosed on the autism spectrum, but who do not fully meet all the criteria for autism or Asperger Syndrome.

A diagnosis on the autism spectrum can be a shock for parents, but for teens and adults it can often be a relief to finally understand what makes them different from their peers. The diagnosis is not the end. It is a beginning of a new way of communicating and adapting. With resources, tools, and professional collaboration, including respite for parents, children and adults on the spectrum can become successful at school and work, and develop a close circle of friends. Their abilities to focus and dig deeply into a particular topic or field of study make them valuable researchers. More and more employers are developing awareness of autism and create environments

and working relationships helpful to those with autism and Asperger’s.

Autism ResourcesThe Autism Society of Northwest Ohio (autism-society.org/chapter416): regional organization offering support and education for individuals on the spectrum, their families, and professionals. Support groups include Sibshop especially for the siblings of those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Offers a specialized program for adolescent girls and women. Provides guidance in teaching social norms, organizational skills, problem-solving skills and more.

The Health Ministries Committee has planned mornings when we can all come to learn about new and long- standing ways of maintaining our wellness, fitness, and health. That’s why our own ministry of Body Recall will be there. As leaders, we think it’s vital for individuals to be independent and live at home as long as possible...Body Recall helps people achieve these goals.

Being physically active and understanding that it doesn’t need to be strenuous to be beneficial keeps you moving at a pace you can continue for years. One student (in his late 80s) recently wrote:

“My flexibility is still good. With two artificial knees, a torn rotator cuff, and peripheral neuropathy in both feet, I should be practically immobile. However, Body Recall keeps me moving quite well. Coming to class provides the motivation I wouldn’t have if I tried to do all the same exercises at home.”

We will see you at Epworth’s Health Fair. Come get motivated to do your part to increase your wellness. It’s possible! You have the power to tap the things that directly affect the quality of your life. Appreciate the wealth that fitness brings to you. We do, every day!
