Elevators and Elevator Talks

All right. June 19th is fast approaching. That’s the day we’ll be having

a single worship service followed by a chicken and noodles dinner and

an open house to tour the new addition and recently renovated education

building. At the heart of the building project has been the construction

of an elevator. But, before we begin using it, a brief tutorial about what

an elevator can and cannot provide is in order.

Elevators are really, really good at transporting people and materials

vertically, that is, from one floor of a building to another. What a joy.

The accessible needs of people will soon be better met: Persons with

impaired mobility (e.g. – restricted to a wheel chair, children in

strollers, and even persons carrying in heavy or cumbersome objects)

will benefit greatly.

Despite the ability to move people and things up and down, the elevator

cannot, per se, move a church forward. But an “elevator talk” can. If

you were asked, could you share the importance of your participation as

a member of First United Methodist Church in just three or four

statements? It might look something like this …

My church is where I worship God along with my friends and

family every week (or every week I am in town and go with my

children in Kansas City when I am visiting them).

I am part of the Stages Sunday School Class (or Mary Circle, or

Choir, or …),

I am part of mission teams through the church (or volunteer at the

Ministry Center, or am part of visitation to nursing homes, or …)

You see, an elevator talk, no longer than it takes to travel between

floors, can speak volumes to someone whose life is stuck. It can

provide someone who has special needs (and who doesn’t) or who is

bearing a heavy burden access to the grace and love of God which we as

the church can help provide. Are you worshipping every week? What

group connects you with others and God? What are you doing for

Christ’s sake? If you cannot answer all three of those questions, it is

time for you to move up to another level. If you can come up with an

elevator talk, then share it!

Thank You!

Thank you all for extending your sympathy and condolences regarding the passing of Grandma Lewis. Knowing the prayers and community support we have here has helped us during this time.

Dear all the wonderful people at FUMC, Thank you so much for the breakfast the other morning with all the other graduates. I thoroughly enjoyed all the great breakfast contraptions everyone made. Also thank you for the new Bible and graduate guide book. I’ll be sure to pack those things for Simpson.

Thanks again, Zach Brod

The members of Nodaway Chapter, NSDAR thanks the church for letting us meet here seven times this year.

A Big Thank you for all the help toward the completion of over 30 beautiful quilts for the Veterans in nursing homes in our area. Next year we will continue doing some Veteran quilts plus some for Noyes Home. The generous contributions of material, backing and batting will continue to be needed. Starting next January, look for information of our starting date.

Della Rhoades Everyone, Thanks to everyone for the Sunday senior breakfast & recognition during 9 am church. Also, thanks for the Bible & God’s Promise for Graduates. I greatly appreciate it!

YouthWorks will also have a waiver that will need signed by parents. I will post it as soon as I have it.

Space on this trip is limited, so it will be a first come/ first serve basis. Hopefully, if we have more students than spaces we can work something out with YouthWorks but we can't guarantee it.

How much does it cost?:

$350 (this includes the deposit) & Scholarships can be made available for students who are in need.

So, where are we going? Cairo (pronounced Cay-row, unlike the city in Egypt) is a small town that sits at the southernmost tip of Illinois. Since this is the spot where the Ohio River meets the mighty Mississippi, Cairo was once a significant stopping point for traffic on the river. Unfortunately, the decline of the river industry led to a loss of jobs and an increase in poverty.

Prayer Teams

You are invited to be a part of the Prayer Team Ministry at FUMC whether you are making a permanent commitment or just want to "come and see", groups meet several times during the week in the Prayer Chapel (just across from the church office). Each group that meets in the Prayer Chapel, share or read the joys and concerns, offer silent prayer and then depart (at least as a group) after 30 minutes.

If your schedule will not allow you to attend your regular group, you may choose to participate at the time from wherever you are, you can choose to attend at another Prayer Group time, or you may come to the Chapel on your own at another time, whenever the church is open. It is designed to be a very relaxed atmosphere, and we hope you will give it a try.

How do you join a prayer team? Just show up at one of the given times below, contact David or Carol Baird or the church office for more information.

Dinner For 8 Taking Break Until Fall Since February there have been ten FUMC Dinner for 8 groups meeting for fellowship, good food, and most important making new friends. Each group was made up of couples, families, and singles that sometimes (including all the children) numbered well over 15! Everyone enjoyed getting together in various settings..........bowling, picnics, cookouts, parks, homes, restaurants, and the FUMC Fellowship Hall. Making and delivering May baskets, learning a new game, or hearing about each other's accomplishments and families were special highlights. Melissa Sandusky-Ury created a Facebook page for everyone to share fun happenings. The best part was inviting someone new to FUMC or those not already in a group to come join in. New groups will be formed in September and a sign up list will go around in August for anyone interested.

DayTrippers Heading South!

The next planned excursion for the FUMC DayTrippers will be a day long visit to Powell Gardens near Kansas City on Thursday, June 16. Leaving at 8 am from FUMC brief stops are planned along the way. Powell Garden is a 915 acre botanical garden with much to see and do. Admittance is $9.00 for seniors with $1.00 for the trolley ride throughout the area. The trolley ride is definitely on the agenda!! This will be an opportunity to visit the Perennial Gardens, Stream Gardens, and Beal's Woodland, along with others. Special summer displays will include the Fernery Exhibit and the Jurassic Park Exhibit that features a step back in time to see and hear about plants and animals of prehistoric time. Lunch is planned in the Cafe' Thyme that offers sandwiches, salads, and soups; the meal cost averages about $10.00. Anyone interested is welcome to come along for a fun day. Arrival time home will be late afternoon (when everyone gets tired!). Sign up in the church office by June 13th for a bus seat.
