What is Radon Gas?
• Chemical element radiaoctive and gaseous
• Granite origin, granite areas, mining.
• From U238 and Ra226 (solids) Rd222 (Gas)

What is the main problem?
• In the atmosphere the low concentration of Rd is not a problem
• Confined spaces HOUSES, concentration could be HIGHER
Why?
Inhalation of Radon (Po218 and Po214) Alpha Particles
• Provokes LUNG CANCER
• USA consideres 2nd cause of Lung Cancer after smoking
• In Europe: Germany, France, Sweden, Holland, Spain, ….
» In 1987 (EPA) and 1988 (IARC):
Radon Gas was declared a Human Carcinogen 7

How to solve it?
• Waterproof membrane or barrier against Rd gas.
• Penetration Control. How much? Diffusion Coefficient of Gas Rd.
D= 10-15 - 10-8 m2/s.
• Diffusion Length (mm) L. German Standard states:
The thickness of barrier must be 3 x L in order to guarantee < 1-2 % atoms.
Requirements from Europe:
Recommendation is 400 Bq/m3
New houses built are 200 Bq/m3 (EPA in USA says 148 Bq/m3)
WHO: Goal is 100 Bq/m3
