Trends1. EXPANSION OF THE PORT OF ROTTERDAM INTO THE NORTH SEA (NEW

LAND) 2. DEVELOPMENT OF A HUGE TECH AGRICULTURAL AREA (WESTLAND) 3. INTENSE SUBURBANISATION OF THE AREA BETWEEN THE HAGUE AND

ROTTERDAM (NEW HOUSING) 4. TRANSITION OF ROTTERDAM FROM A PORT CITY TO A ‘CREATIVE CITY

WITH A PORT’ 5. LARGE EXPANSION OF UTRECHT AS A TRANSPORT HUB AND A

PREFERRED CITY FOR DWELLINGS AND DUTCH COMPANIES 6. EXPANSION OF THE SCHIPHOL AIRPORT 7. EXPANSION OF AMSTERDAM AS THE INTERNATIONAL GATEWAY TO THE

NETHERLANDS AND CULTURAL HUB/ HOUSING, CULTURE 8. THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW ISLAND (FLEVOLAND) WITH RAPID

EXPANSION OF HOUSING AND EMPLOYMENT (NEW CITIES)

A Metropolis in the making

BUT DOES IT WORK AS A COHERENT URBAN SYSTEM?

In order to compete with other similar European city regions

✤ The internal coherence of the Randstad has to be reinforced,

✤ New and better spatial infrastructures have to be created or improved

✤ The Randstad needs to be known and identified as metropolis

✤ Or we can change the name of the region to Amsterdam

A Metropolis in the making• The commuting patterns between the

various nodes in the network should be reinforced by improving the connections between them.

• The ring is the structuring element.• The station areas are ideal places to

promote new kinds of urban centrality.
