We are close to restoring Unity Hall to its former glory andturning it into a vital new hub for the city and the 21stCentury – as a nationally acknowledged music, theatreand arts venue, a thriving conference centre and a hot-bedfor smart new business innovators.

The timing couldn’t be better. Wakefield may have been over-shadowed creatively by other cities in recent years, but many major initiatives – kick-started by the award-winningHepworth Gallery – are now gaining momentum.

Unity Hall’s location couldn’t be better too. Located at the verycentre of new developments in the city, opposite the Westgate rail station, currently undergoing a major transformation, theTheatre Royal which is being extended, and the impressive newMerchant Gate urban regeneration zone. Wakefield’s fast-risingmusic venture, The Hop, is also just around the corner and thearea is awash with car parking spaces.

Unity House (Wakefield) Limited – a new co-operative formed this year – plans to exploit strong ties with all of these businessesand developments. The venue will accommodate acts and showswhich are too big for either the Theatre Royal or The Hop. For conferences, its central location on the East Coast train lineand ample parking offer an opportunity to finally re-centralisebusiness meeting places in the city.

The plan at a glance:— Full refurbishment of Unity Hall— A 650-seater venue and an 80-seater function room— 12,000 square feet of office space — 3,500 square feet of meeting space— A café on Westgate with reception, exhibition space and

independent retail.

WHY A CO-OPERATIVE?

Terms have now been agreed for a 999 year lease of the Grade IIlisted building (excluding Buzz nightclub in the basement and theSmyth Street corner unit) and the new Unity Hall project isalready in the process of securing the £4 million required.

Unity House (Wakefield) Limited is working as a developmentpartner with regeneration specialist Shine to secure the moneyfrom a combination of European funding, Wakefield Council, theArts Council, banks and other investment sources.

Shine has previously achieved tremendous success with a similarscheme in Harehills, Leeds, transforming a disused Victorianschool into a vibrant office and events centre. For further detailssee www.shinebusinesscentre.co.uk

But more than anything, such projects need people to make them work.

Co-operatives include local residents and businesses anddemonstrate to funding agencies and grants organisations aninterest and willingness to make such projects viable at ground level.

As a consequence, Unity House (Wakefield) Limited is aiming tosecure £200,000 through initial equity funding, which will beused for survey and pre-construction work to get the project upand running.

To become part of the co-operative, individuals and organisationscan each buy up to £20,000 in shares, with the minimuminvestment being £200 (200 shares). It will be run on a onemember, one vote basis.

The plan is to pay interest on your shares at 6% from Year Three of trading. If, for any reason the project does not proceed, your money will be returned by June 2013. Less pre-construction expenditure.
