FISHING

Saltwater Fishing (In-Shore) The inshore waters of the Central Pacific coast are some of the most abundant sport fisheries in the world. Literally thousands of Roosterfish populate the area and are caught year around. There can be so much action with Gallos (Roosters) that often clients prefer to target other species after hours of battling these hard fighting “brawlers”. The IGFA all tackle world record for Snook (a 58lb. Pacific Black) and the record for Pacific Backfin both came from the local waters and the limits of those records are being challenged frequently. Casting over submerged rocks and reefs can produce various Jacks and up to five different kinds of Snapper including: Colorado, Mullet, Pacific Dog, Spotted Rose and Yellow. When the waters are warmer (December through May) and baitfish (Herring, Mullet, etc.) are found in tight schools or “baitballs” the action can be fast and furious with the predators species that patrol the perimeters. Usually the baitfish reach their mature size during the summer months from November to May and then are seen sporadically throughout the rest of the year. These predators/sport fish include: Barracuda (Pacific and Mexican), Pacific Bonito, Stripped Corvina, Jack Crevalle(Common and Pacific), Dolphinfish (aka Dorado or Mahi Mahi), Milkfish, Mackerel (Sierra and Chub), Needlefish, Black Skipjack, Trevally (Bigeye and Bluefin), Trippletail, Tuna (Yellowfin, Bigeye and Skipjack), Wahoo. Inshore trips are done in 27' customized center console sport fishers with T-tops. The small, light maneuverable pangas are required when the action is right in the surf.

Tour Includes: Pick-up/drop-off from the villa, an experienced/bilingual capitan and his crew, beverages, drinking water; tropical fruits and lunch are provided as is all fishing equipment.

Requirements/Items to bring: Bathing suit and shorts, Suntan lotion, camera, sun glasses, tight fitting hat, rubber sandals or tennis shoes. (No Thong Sandals, Closed sandals best). Duration: Full or half day tours are available

Saltwater Fishing (Offshore) Only minutes from the villa, the brand new Pez Marina in Quepos and it’s offshore fishing grounds are world famous for the numerous records (fly and conventional tackle) that have been set and the large numbers of fish it can produce during the peak seasons. Sailfish are the name of the game here and are available year around with December through April being the prime season. 30 to 40 fish days are common during those peak warmer months when numerous Sails can be seen free-jumping and resting on the surface. Blue, Black, Stripped Marlin and other Pelagic species are common in the local waters but are more seasonally caught on their North- South migration routes. March and April and November and December see more Marlin than other months but they are caught every month of the year. Dorado (Dolphinfish or Mahi Mahi) thrive in these waters. Wahoo are a seasonal fish that occupies these waters during the warmer months from December to April, but can be caught all year. Catch one and your chef will prepare it to perfection back at the villa!

Tour Includes: Pick-up/drop-off from the villa, an experienced and bilingual capitan and his crew, beverages, drinking water; tropical fruits and lunch are provided as is all fishing equipment.

Fresh Water Fishing (Lowland Rivers) Once the rivers reach the Pacific Lowlands they are bigger, wider and calmer and are home to an interesting mix of species. It is in these waters that Snook usually reach their limits of inland migration and where Machaca and Roncador also reach their limits of seaward travel. Some of the bigger specimens of each species can be encountered so this is typically bigger rod and heavy shock/bite tippet territory. These fisheries are usually worked from drift boats and on foot due to the quiet, serene nature of the environment and the wary, spooky traits of the larger fish that inhabit the area.

Freshwater Fishing-Mountain Rivers There are several different watersheds on the Central Pacific Coast that each contain large main river drainages that are fed by numerous tributaries and literally hundreds of small creeks and streams. Because of higher water levels and whitewater conditions during the rainy months in the mountains, these trips are only available from December to May and then depending on the weather through August.

Tour Includes: Pick-up/drop-off from the villa, an experienced and bilingual capitan and his crew, beverages, drinking water; tropical fruits and lunch are provided as is all fishing equipment.

Whitewater sections of river do exist on some of these trips so clients need to be prepared for all conditions. Due to remote locations and lack of manpower in the wilderness clients may be asked to assist with physical tasks like loading and unloading boats. The predominant species in these waters is the Machaca which is a favorite for it’s aggressive nature when feeding on or near the surface, and for it’s acrobatics. Roncador (Pacific Grunt), Mojarra, Guavina, and Tepe-Machin are common to this area and in 2007 the International Game Fish Association world record for Roncador (7 lbs. 2 oz.) was caught in these waters. Even though some of the mountain trips start over 450feet in altitude, we can find saltwater species like Snook and Cubera Snapper cruising in the area. Mountain river trips are done either on foot, from drift boats and duckies, or both.
