Finding Joy in an Upside-Down World

I think it has been well-established that, as far as Jewish holidays go, none is better suited to New Orleans than Purim. Costumes? Required. Boisterous behavior? Completely called for. Alcohol in abundance? Mandated by Jewish tradition. General silliness? Totally normal. Purim is the upside-down holiday: It’s the day we put on masks to help us discover our true nature; it’s the day we drown out the villain’s name even as we confront the possibility of our destruction; It’s the day when we’re commanded to lose our senses, to be so confused that we can’t tell our friends from our enemies, all while celebrating our moral certitude. More than anything else, it’s just a fun day to be in synagogue! Purim is an opportunity to let loose, have fun, share a laugh, and fulfill a mitzvah all at the same time. Turn your world upside down for a day--it’s the Jewish thing to do. We hope you join us for our Purim observances! (see pages 2&3 for more details).

I am often asked what is it like to be a Synagogue president – is it much different than being on the Board or Executive Committee? Always fond of analogies, I answer the question by making a comparison to raising a child. Service on the Board or Executive Committee is akin to being an attentive aunt or uncle. You invest yourself in the process with responsibility, and commensurate with the role(s) you undertake. When your big project is reaching critical mass, with wise management, you largely control the demands on your time. Much like the adoring aunt or uncle, you drop off your niece or nephew and the parents take over the full-time heavy lifting. As Congregation president, the “child” is your responsibility 24/7. Despite your best efforts to establish a manageable schedule, there are often unexpected distractions – both good and not so good – that require immediate attention. On occasion, these can be challenging and time consuming, rendering your well-planned schedule obsolete in the blink of an eye. It is the unexpected that makes this position fascinating and, at times, a bit overwhelming. Other than, “What is it like?” the other question I’m often asked is: “How do you handle the demands of the congregants?” As I was contemplating whether I would accept the honor of the presidency, a few well-meaning colleagues opined that handling “complaints” might make this a thankless burden, and asked did I really want to undertake such aggravation. That’s the kind of notion that can generate doubt and trepidation. Happily, my experience has not come close to resembling those apprehensions. The most pleasant and heart-warming part of being your Congregational president is the enormous support and encouragement I receive. By contrast to horror stories shared with me by presidents of other congregations at the recent URJ Biennial, the problems and concerns which you share with me at Touro are genuine and legitimate. With rare exception, when my assistance is sought, people are polite and respectful. Even more heartening is the fact that I am not hearing, “I don’t like this, fix it” rather, what I do hear is “we can make this better” – often coupled with well-reasoned suggestions for addressing those matters. [Okay, it is true that I occasionally hear that it is either too hot or cold (or both) at services but – hey – it’s not a perfect world.] The point I am thrilled to make is that the inter-personal relationships that form such a big part of this job have not proven to be a negative, but, rather, an unexpected treasure. This is truly a special place, and I am so privileged to be entrusted with this great honor. In closing, let me remind you that I would like to hear from you if there is something we can do to improve your experience as a member of your Congregation.

From the Educator

At religious school each Sunday, we collect tzedakah. It goes in a small envelope, class by class, and then added together in a change box, then counted, and deposited into the bank about once a week. From a child’s perspective, this money leaves their hands and goes somewhere. Somewhere away from their sight and hands. They can imagine that the money is used to help someone in need, someone poor, a homeless person, or used to save cute animals at the shelter. Those are all correct answers. But it’s hard to think about how our tzedakah is used when we drop some change into an envelope and then it’s whisked away – out of sight, out of mind. We have tried more and more to use our collected tzedakah funds in the sight for our students and in a way that they can touch some needed items. For example, we use the money to buy peanut butter and jelly and turkey for sandwiches to feed the homeless at The Rebuild Center. Our 6th graders can quickly and professionally make at least 100 sandwichess in under 30 minutes. We use tzedakah to buy supplies to help residents at Lambeth House make a project with our third graders. We take some of the money to buy and produce the needed items for the Jewish Family Service Pesach food baskets. Our PK – 5 graders just spent some time last week making Afikoman envelopes – full of colorful messages and designs. And for Touro Christmas Mitzvah, religious school tzedakah bought 12 turkeys that went with the homemade meal that fed 150 homeless on Christmas day. Tzedakah is used for many purposes and thankfully we have opportunities to do more good this year and next. As you hand your child a dollar next time before entering the doors at religious school, remember that your generosity makes a difference in the world and your child is part of Tikkun Olam – repairing the world.

Information packets will be given to each family to help familiarize everyone with all the details that go into this joyous event from Hebrew and Torah portions, to reception planning. Rabbi Berk, Cantor Marx, Eileen Hamilton, & Kerry Tapia

will be on hand to answer your questions.

Be sure at least one parent and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah child attends this important meeting.

My Bar Mitzvah is a big step for me. Going through the process of preparing for my Bar Mitzvah has helped me learn to be responsible for myself. It has also helped me become more connected to the Jewish Community. My Mitzvah project involves organizing a basketball tournament in order to raise money for PeacePlayers International. PeacePlayers International is an organization which uses sports programs to bring children together from opposite sides of religious, ethnic, and cultural divides in places such as Israel and Northern Ireland. The premise behind the program is that children who play together can learn to live together. I think that using sports to bring kids together is a great way for kids to learn about each other and try to live in peace.

For our Mitzvah Project, Gabe and I have decided to support an organization called PeacePlayers. It was founded to promote the peaceful interaction between groups of young people who live in countries where there is daily conflict between different ethnic and religious groups. Through the teaching of the game of Basketball, PeacePlayers is able to bring thousands of kids together to learn from and about each other through sports. We will be raising money to support this worthy organization’s efforts by putting on a 3 on 3 basketball tournament. The money we raise will be used by PeacePlayers to train coaches, support teams and help pay for transportation costs for the players in Israel, Ireland and Crete. It is important to me to help support this type of organization which helps young people each and every day. As a Bar Mitzvah, I have come to realize that if we don’t do something, then who will? If we don’t act now to help those in need, how can the world be a better and more peaceful place for us all?

All you ever wanted to know about your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah Planning Meeting...plus booking your date!

All current 4th grade families will have the opportunity to place their Bar/Bat Mitzvah date on the calendar.
