PRAGUE Did you know?Think all those Bohemian crystals in thenumerous shops of the Old Town havesomething special about them? It's not

just the pretty carvings of colourfuldetails; if you find some vintagecrystals, you might be getting anunexpected ingredient - uranium! At theturn of the 19th century, a Germanchemist named Martin Klaprothdiscovered uranium in a silver mine inBohemia, and added it to glass to makeit more colourful. Soon, Bohemiancrystal-makers started adding theradioactive ingredient to their wares.Luckily, the crystal you'll find in shopswon't mutate your genes - but it suredoes look pretty! Be sure to give theglass wonders a browse while in Prague,as Bohemian crystal is one of thecommodities the Czech Republic is bestknown for worldwide.

City Of A Hundred SpiresIt seems like most Central Europeancities attractions lie squarely withtheir Old Town, but in this, as in manythings, Prague is an exception to therule. Though the Old Town does hold ahistoric square and several interestingmuseums and cathedrals, as well as itsancient Jewish Quarter, a proper visit toPrague requires some wanderingoutside of its cobblestoned old centreand into its many centralneighborhoods. With its own Castledistrict, a New Town brimming withexcitement, and the unfortunatelynamed Lesser Town - where lesser isgreater Prague s sights and soundswill occupy the weekenders as well asthe permanent ex-pat.

Since 1992, the entire Old Town hasfound itself in an exclusive club theUNESCO list of World Heritage Sites the anthropological equivalent of beingon the guest list of Studio 54. Praguetherefore is quite proud of their centre, and most houses have been renovatedand the streets swept clean of theircommunist past. The best place to startto explore the Old Town is the mainsquare, which holds the AstronomicalClock and Old Town Hall Tower, as wellas many historic churches and oldhouses. Just north of the Old Town isJozefov, the historic Jewish quarter of Prague, where several survivingsynagogues still stand and holdservices.

From Jozefov, one can take theManesuv Bridge over the Vltava Riverand enter the Castle District, orHradcany. At this point all you need todo is look and go up! While theclimb up the castle s steps might bestrenuous and a bit dangerous in thewinter thanks to the thick layer of iceand snow covering them the viewfrom the top is well worth the struggle, and it ll help you burn off those extrapilsner pounds. Exploring the PragueCastle itself could be an all-day event,so we recommend getting there early,as in the summer the tourists beginlining up even before opening time.

Once you ve given the Prague Castle aproper storming, head downhill (ahh, relief!) and south to the Lesser Town.Though not as historically mature as theOld Town, the Lesser Town featuresseveral interesting sights and museums,as well as a multitude of churches andconcert halls that fill the atmospherewith classical music every summer. TheLesser Town also hosts some of thecutest and coziest cafes andrestaurants, which are usually not ascrowded with tourists as in the OldTown. Once you ve done a fair share of exploring the Lesser Town, be sure tocross the famous Charles Bridge back tothe Old Town, and head south down theVaclavske Avenue, past Wenceslas onhis horse and the National Museum, tothe New Town, where you ll find parksgalore (and the Prague BotanicalGardens). We recommend the park

behind the Prague Central Station, where you can sit on a hill, watchpeople playing with their dogs, and takea breather above Prague

Want to explore further? The PragueLife team has written more detailedguides to each district of Prague (OldTown, Jewish Quarter, New Town,Hradcany, Lesser Town), as well asplenty of information about sights in ourculture directory, so get out there andexplore!

Prague Travel TipsHere are a few things to bear in mindduring your stay in Prague. First off, asin any modern European city, keep yourwits about you and try to avoid lookingtoo much like a tourist if at all possible.Central Prague is as safe - if not safer -than most large Western cities, but italways pays to be vigilant. Check withthe tourist office before going for amidnight wander anywhere outside thecentre.

Smoking is most definitely permitted inpublic spaces (except for publictransport) and you should expect funnylooks and withering put-downs if youask someone to extinguish theircigarette outside a designatednon-smoking area (such as those foundin 99% of restaurants).

Service charges are rare in restaurants

and cafes but check the bill just in case.Tipping is expected instead and 10% isconsidered to be the respectableamount.

The weather in summer is generallysunny and hot, with temperatureshovering around the high 20's C. Winteris very cold however, so if you'replanning a romantic snowbound tripthen don't forget to pack a hat, gloves, and some thermal underwear!

If you have a laptop then a cheaperalternative to using internet cafes is tolog in to one of the many public wirelessnetworks that exist in the city centre. Atlast count there are over 100 suchhotspots so you should never be stuckwithout internet access. Most cafesadvertise their free WiFi at the door.

Whilst businesses love the increasedtrade provided by large groups of tourists - stag, hen, football/rugby toursetc. - previous bad experiences havemade the locals twitchy whenconfronted with large groups of (usuallyBritish) people hellbent on drunkenoblivion. If you're coming as part of such a group then please rememberthat you're a guest in their city and thatyou should treat it, and them, withrespect. If you don't then you'll soonfind that local police won't be afraid to

    do the same to you.

Travelling to PragueBy airAs an incredibly popular traveldestination, Prague is very wellconnected by all the major, as well asbudget airlines. Flights to Prague arebest booked well in advance, especiallyduring the high season, when certainflights, particularly at weekends, can getquite expensive if booked at the lastminute.

Ruzyne is the International Airport forPrague and is situated about 20kmnorth from the city. The journeybetween the two should take roughly 30minutes to an hour, depending on themode of transport you've chosen. Cityand transport maps are available at theairport's Tourist Information Centre.

The quickest way of making the journeyis by taxi, but be warned: Prague's taxishave a justified reputation for beingdownright dodgy in their businesspractices when dealing with foreigners. They will never miss an opportunity tofleece an unsuspecting tourist, but if you follow the golden rules - avoid taxiswithout illuminated signs, agree a pricebefore starting your journey, and ensurethe meter is switched on - you will befine. A taxi ride from the airport to thecity centre should cost about 700Kc.

A slower but cheaper option is to catchone of the "Cedaz" buses that leaveabout every half an hour between 5:30a.m. and 9:30 p.m. They go to NamestiRepubliky and a ticket costs about 90Kc.

The cheapest option of all is to catch the119 bus from the airport terminal toDejvicka subway station, from whereyou can speed into the city centre(using line A), happy in the knowledgethat to do so cost a mere 75Kc.

    By train

If you are on an inter-rail trip, or justprefer the romance of rail, then you willbe pleased to know that Prague isextremely well served by internationalrailway networks. There are 2 main

railway stations: Hlavni Nadrazi (Praguecentral station) and Praha Holesovice(Holesovice station). The busiest trainsseem to come from Berlin (5.5 hoursaway) Vienna (4.5 hours) and Budapest(6.5 hours). You can pretty much go bytrain to anywhere in Europe fromPrague; its central location making itthe perfect launching pad for trips toKrakow, Warsaw, or Sofia - to name buta few.

As with any large station in anyEuropean city, keep your wits about youand be aware of your surroundings, aspick-pockets and petty thievesoccasionally target tourists here.

    By bus

Again, Prague's central location meansthat there is no shortage of bus servicesto the city from all over Europe. The

main bus station is called Florenc and ison subway lines B and C. If you are on atight budget then we'd recommend thebus as the views are spectacularwhichever direction you approach thecity (and country) from. Only if journeytime is of no importance though, as a

journey from London (for example)takes 23 hours!

    By car

You must be brave to even beconsidering this! The roads are fairlyropey in the Czech Republic (thoughimproving greatly all the time), but onthe bright side there's hardly ever traffic

jams on the motorways. The same can'tbe said for traffic in Prague itself however, as it is pretty much stand-stillfrom Monday to Friday, and you can

increase that to include the weekendsduring peak visiting season. Our advice?Don't drive in Prague unless you can'treally avoid it, but consider it a greatway to see attractions outside the cityon your own terms.

    Getting around PragueBy Public Transport

Getting around Prague is easy andinexpensive. Public transport coverageis extensive throughout the city and isdivided into three main modes of getting around: buses, trams, and thesubway (tube for you Brits). Single

tickets cost 20CZK and are valid for 75minutes, on all transport types, fromthe moment you "validate" it; i.e. stickit in the on-board ticket machine.

We know what you're thinking now: thatif you don't need to validate the ticketto travel then why bother? Well theanswer lies in the form of the manyundercover ticket inspectors travellinground the city on the lookout for fareevaders. They are extremely zealous -not to mention utterly unsympathetictowards tourists confused by the system- and we have never seen anyonesuccessfully plead their way out of afine. One word of warning: if you do getstopped then ask to see the inspector'sID card - conmen do occasionally try topass themselves off as ticket inspectors.Genuine inspectors are legally obliged toshow you their ID, which should havetheir photo and the words "dopravnipodnik" on there somewhere.

    By Taxi

Taxis can be a bit of a lottery. They'vegot a bad reputation for ripping off tourists, but the government aregradually getting to grips with theproblem. Avoid picking up taxis fromdrivers who approach you on the street:if you must catch a taxi when out andabout then only pick one with a roof

light, ask how much the journey will bebefore getting in, and ask for a receiptafterwards. It is always best to ask yourhotel/hostel to recommend a taxicompany - otherwise check our service

U Jednoho PokojeUtterly uniqueYou haven't have been anywhere likethis before: the address and contactdetails (save for email) are not availableanywhere - you must book by email atleast 24 hours in advance, giving yourname, your mobile number, the eveningyou would like to reserve, the numberof people visiting plus any meal andwine preferences. If this seems like ahassle, trust us: it's worth it. The(French) owner does everything himself, the food is incredible and you dineamongst art exhibitions that change

every month or so. It's pricier than most- average 250CZK - but if you've gotthe cash, and you leave Prague withoutcoming here, then you should take along hard look at yourself!near Pavlova Squaretel: +42 (221) 714 444www.http://www.ujednohopokoje.cz

Svata Klara A deep experienceThis gem of a restaurant has beenaround since 1679 and its gimmick isthat the whole thing is set underground

in a natural cave. Not that it needs agimmick though, as the food is goodenough for it to operate without one:the menu is very large and varied, witha particularly broad range of gamedishes. All the splendour is reflected inthe prices however, making this adestination that may not be in thebudget of most visitors.U Trojskeho Zamku 35 tel: +42 (233) 540 173www.http://www.svataklara.cz

    Kure v HodinkachHearty yet cool

Step inside Kure v hodinkach (TheChicken in the Watch) and you'll findyourself in perhaps the ultimatemanifestation of modern Prague: verycool and friendly, but a sense of historyretained with more than a nod totradition. The food is hearty fare andmostly of the traditional grill variety, soexpect lots of meat, particularly pork, but made with a modern twist. Theclincher in our opinion is the fact thatyou can get no less than six domesticbeers on tap: a rarity in this brewerymonopolised city.U Seifertova 26tel: +42 (222) 734 212www.http://www.kurevhodinkach.com

    RanaSubcontinental style

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is ourfavourite place for a curry in Prague. It's a bit further out but worth the

journey because the food ishome-cooked, the menu range good(don't like curry? Have a pizza hereinstead!), and the service friendly - forPrague. Banditos Arriba!Time was that it was damn nearimpossible to find decent Mexican foodanywhere East of the Atlantic Ocean, but that's all changed these days asplaces like Banditos pop up in every cityall over Europe. We're not complaining -we love Mexican food and that which isserved at Banditos is very good indeed -

AlbioSick of meat? Labelling Albio as simply "vegetarian"doesn't do it justice. They've gone thewhole hog (but not a real one, don'tpanic!): everything is organic (includingthe wine), and they have their ownorganic vegetable store on thepremises. The food isn't the only thingthat's friendly - the staff are too - andindeed the whole place has a chilled out, informal feel to it that makes it ideal for

families, even those with very youngchildren as there is a playpen in themiddle of the place. No screaming kidswhen we went, which is why, even asseasoned meat freaks, we love Albio!U Truhlarska 18-20tel: +42 (222) 325 414www.http://www.prague-life.com

Klasterni pivovar StrahovFantastic monastic Located just over the road from theStrahov Monastery, this large andpopular pub/restaurant has its ownbrewery that has been going strongsince the 17th century, producing St.Norbert beer. There is also a restauranton the premises, which by all accountsis pretty good, but we've never gotfurther than the drinking area to behonest! The beer is pretty expensive butthe unique location, surroundings (acomplete renovation was performedrecently), and possibility of

Bugsy's BarWhat's up doc? Bugsy's relies on their expert bartendersfor success and that has certainly

proved succesful, as it was recentlyvoted in the world's top 20 bars byNewsweek. This is the kind of placewhere ordering a simple vodka & cokecan take an age, depending on howflamboyant the bartender feels i.e. howmany times he'll chuck the bottle in theair, perform a triple twist and catch thewhole thing behind his back. It'scertainly entertaining, as proven by themasses who flock here most nights, butcheck the price before you order yourcocktail, lest you mistakenly order theworld's most expensive cocktail: TheManhattan.U Parizska 10tel: +42 (224) 810 287 www.http://www.bugsysbar.com

    O'Che's Irish with a twist

Every single town and city in the worldcontains at least one Irish pub, andthere's usually little to distinguish themfrom each other. Not this place though,it's a safe bet that this is the onlyCuban/Irish pub anywhere in the world. It's a great mix: genuine Irishhospitality (and Guinness!) with Cubanflair and warmth, and that's partly whyexpats moving to Prague tend to makethis their local. The three TVs and hugescreen show all the sports that matterand there's even a succesful dartsleague hosted here (the standard of which is intimidatingly high). Highlyrecommended.
