Florentin, a noble knight from Champagne, was martyred in the fifth century by a leader of the Vandals. His relics were brought in 833 by two countesses, Godelina and Lemissa to St Florentin. From that time, the city was named after him..
1 THE CHURCH. Its dimensions are so impressive it leads one to think of an unfinished cathedral. This imposing parish church was never completed; it lacks the nave. Dominating the heart of the town, it houses an outstanding collection of stained glass windows and one of the remaining 7 stone rood screens in France, impressive statuary and an organ from the seventeenth century.
2 THE FOUNTAIN. Bronze dragons dating back to the sixteenth century decorate the Gothic and Renaissance fountain, rebuilt in 1984. At the top of the fountain are Saints Martin and Florentin, Barbe and Béate as well as Adam and Eve.
3 THE MUSEUM. A church snake, the sign of a hatter, Venus de Milo ... The museum presents the life and environment of times gone by but also hosts temporary exhibitions in the fields of sculpture, photography and painting.
4 THE OLD TOWN. As marked on the map. Wooden timbered houses, colors and alleys of yesteryears. Well, College, Tertre roads, lead strollers outside the town walls into the outskirts and the hills of Saint Florentin.
5 THE PRIORY. Saint Florentin is a town that goes up, allowing one access to the well-earned panorama of the priory. Here in the ninth century was built a monastery where Canons and hospital sisters lived. This is also where we can dream of the musicians who animate the bandstand on occasion.
6 THE BELL TOWER. Within the church walls are the hidden bells. It’s steep roved tower dates from the twelfth century fortifications and is the last remaining of six towers formerly used to defend the town. 7 THE PUBLIC GARDEN. At the foot of the old town and near the former tanner district, between two branches of the River Armance, extends a park that weaves its story in walking along its paths. The outdoor theater dates from the 50s where Léo Ferré gave his last concert.
8 THE CANAL BRIDGE. In Vauban style, it dates from 1810 and allows the Burgundy Canal to join the River Armance. Located near lock 108, close to the port, the 5 arched stone bridge is yet another sight to see in the town.
9 THE PLEASURE PORT. It used to be a commercial and industrial port. It now welcomes pleasure boats and provides an ideal starting point to discover the waterways of the region. It is also the meeting point for cyclists, hikers, and walkers.
10 ALONG THE CANAL. As always, the towpath was used by the men and animals that pulled boats. Now, go along the canal banks or bike lanes to discover the locks, the stadium, meet fishermen or simply just enjoy peacefulness in its natural setting.
