InthefouryearssinceourprogramfirstlaunchedMTMhastransformedfromtheoriginalgoalofraisingtheprofessionalismofnaturalresource-basedtourismpractitionerstowhathasbecomeastronginternationalcontributorinspecializedtourismeducation.Throughthededicatedeffortsofourfaculty,staffandAdvisoryBoardmembersthisprogramhasgrowndramatically,extendeditsreachglobally,andhadsignificantimpactonbothindividuallivesandthetourismindustry.
Growth.Buildingontheoriginalon-campuscohortcappedat30students,MTMnowoffersafullyonlineMTMprogram,agraduatecertificateinSkiAreaManage-ment and a new distance MtM program offered to Mandarin speaking students at CentralChinaNormalUniversity(CCNU)inWuhan,China.Totalenrollmentacrossallfourofferingsforfall2016isexpectedtoexceed130students.
Globalization.InadditiontooursuccessfulpartnershipinChina,theDepartmentofHumanDimensionsofNaturalResources,UniversityofDerby,theUniversitiesofbothSassariandPisa,CCNU,andtheUnitedNationsWorldTourismOrganization(UnWto) have joined to host the inaugural Tourism Naturally: Mountain and Costal SystemsconferencethiscomingfallinAlghero,Italy.
OurnewaffiliatemembershipwiththeUNWTOhasalsofosteredagrowingrela-tionshipwiththeUniversityofAndorra,allowingustobeginbuildingacooperativeprograminEuropefocusedonmountaintourism.
Beyondinternationaloutreach,ourcoreMTMon-campusandonlineprogramscontinue to attract international students from Europe, Latin America, across West AsiaandthePacificRim;aswellasasignificantgroupofstudentsfromChinathroughINTOCSU.Overall,theMTMprogramsaveragenearly50%internationalstudentenrollment.
Impact.Ultimately,MTMcanhavenogreaterimpactthanhelpingtoensurethatourgraduatesfindemploymentinthetourismindustry.Throughcollaborativeprogramspecialization,targetedskills-basededucation,internationalnetworkingandindustryoutreach,nearly70%ofourengagedgraduatesarecurrentlyemployedinthetourismindustry.
MTM’sfutureisbright.Withtheongoingsupportofourindustrypartners,CSUOnlineandtheUniversityadministration,theWarnerCollegeofNaturalResources,andourterrificstudentsandalumni;welookforwardtoprovidingafuturerichwithgrowingeducationalopportunitiesandglobalimpact.

MTM Cohort Visits – Estes Park, Crawford Hotel, & DIA

The2015-2016MTMcohorttooktwospecialVIPtours,inSeptember2016studentsvisitedtheRockyMountainnational Park, rocky Mountain YMCA, and the Stanley HotelinEstesParkandVisitEstes,too.Inthespring,students participated in a visit to historic Union Station andCrawfordHotelinDenver,followedbyatourofthenewlybuiltWestinHotelatDIAandabehindthescenetouroftheairport.Ittrulywasaonceinalifetimeexperience for these students, and was a great case study inhowtheseorganizationsplayacriticalroleintourismdevelopmentandsustainability.
The2016cohortparticipatedintheinauguralTourismEnterpriseAward,ayearlongbusinessplandevelopmentproject.ThisprojectincorporatedallthepertinentelementsoftheMTMcurriculumintoafullydevelopedbusinessplan.ThetopfivefinalbusinessplanswerepresentedtomembersoftheMTMAdvisoryBoardandawardedasignif-icantscholarshipforfirstandsecondplace.Thetopprizesthisyearwere;secondplace,TuViaappbyLisaHaassandCaylaTurain,andinfirstplace,V.Know: Wine ToursbyHalletteSmyth.

MtM faculty have spent several years negotiating and working to adapt the MtM program to Mandarin, in partnershipwithCentralChinaNormalUniversity.Theprogram kicked off in the spring of 2016 with 12 CCnU studentson-campusinWuhan,China,whoreportedanenjoyableyearandgavehighlyratedevaluationsoftheoverallprogram.Collaborativeeffortsandrelationshipscontinue to grow with CCnU faculty joining MtM faculty at the Pathways conference in Africa, and with bothfacultyandstudentsplanningtoattendtheTourism NaturallyconferenceinItalythisfall.
