History of jaisalmer

• The fort and town of jaisalmer was founded by maharawal jaisal in the year 1156 AD.

• The ruling family of Rajput's belongs to the bhaati clan of yadu Rajput's.

• The treaty between MaharawalMoolraj-II and the British government bought the ruler under subordinate rule.

• In 1939 ,during afghan wars then ruler helped British in transportation, for which they were grateful for timely help and co-operation.

• On October 6,1949,the region was given the status of an independent district in Jodhpur division.

• Jaisalmer has a population of 6,72,008

• Density of the district is 17 people per sq. km

• Increase in Population at a growth rate of 31.81% is reported.

Flora and fauna

• Lora, Rohida, Van, Phog, Kumbhar, Jal, Neem, Babul and many other trees are to be found among sparse vegetation.

• Orchards are luxury and can be seen occasionally

• Sheep, cow, goat, camel,chinkaraand wild boar and jackals form the fauna here.

• The birds commonly found in the area are peacock, parrot, pigeon etcand specially the white Palam birds make the surroundings interesting.

• The number of great Indian bustards, which were once in abundance in Thar Desert, began to decline fast.

How to reach ??• By air –

jodhpur airport is located 300km away, but jodhpur is well connected to all metros by all airlines• By rail-

jaisalmer is well connected to all cities through broad and meter gauges.

jaisalmer is also one of the major station in the journey by India's most luxurious train "Palace on wheels“• By road-Jaisalmer town lies on Highway No. 15.

It has luxury Mercedes volvo bus connectivity with Delhi as well as Ahmedabad. A large number of buses also ply from

jaisalmer to major parts of Rajasthan and also other parts of India

People and culture

• Jaisalmer district is bestowed with art, architecture, culture and traditions.

• Being in the neighborhood the language, culture and traditions of the people of the district are influenced by the culture of sindh.

• People in jaisalmer are very jovial and friendly

• More than 80% of population have a rural lifestyle,and mostly only males go for work

• People live in jhopri’s which are houses made of grass.

• In the villages the main sources of income are animal rearing and farming.

CUISINE• Distinct style of food• Known for spicy curries and delicious

sweets• Milk and butter are used more often

than water• Dried lentils and beans• Gram flour is used to make its staples

like pakodi and gatta ki sabzi• Chutneys were made from local

fried with vegetables• Khadi pakora- flour dumplings

cooked in yoghurt• Bhanon aloo- potatoes filled with mint

CULTURE• Jaisalmer comprises of several

religions of Hindus, Jains, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians.

• The traditional folk music and dance is an integral part of the social and cultural life of the inhabitants of Jaisalmer.

Forts,palaces and monuments of Jaisalmer bear resemblance to the Indian architectural style.

• The crafts of Jaisalmer comprise of unique art and craft works of exquisite designs of silver jewelries,printing work etc.

DESERT FESTIVAL• The Desert Festival is held in the

month of January or February, every year. Duration- 3 days

• The major attractions - snake charmers, puppeteers, acrobats, folk performers, Gair and Fire dancers etc

• Unique feature-camel polo and camel dance.

• Traditional dance of Ghoomarand Kalbeliya fill the air with music, joy and mirth.

JAISALMER FORT

Golden Fort of Rajasthan. It was constructed by Raja Jaisal, Rajput ruler in the year 1156 AD. It ranks amongst the largest forts in the world

BADA BAGH• Bada Bagh means

‘Huge Garden’. Maharawal JaitSingh’s period saw its construction, which was in the beginning of 16th century

• The garden served as a memorial where the nobles and their families were cremated.

Patwon-Ki-Haveli

Built by a famous trader named Guman chand and his sons.
