    KNOWING THE METRO (works 5:30 am to 11:00pm)

    The Caracas Subway/Metro/Underground goes East (Palo Verde) to West (Propatria). You must read either Direccin Palo

    Verde or Direccin Pro-Patria when you are in the station. The station closest to Nelsons Place is SABANA GRANDE at a

    block and a half away going North. TIP: The AVILA mountain in front of Caracas is always North.

    Colonial Downtown Caracas Capitolio. - Station Capitolio.Take the exit that says La Bolsa. You will see the Congressional

    Building (white small palacette). Walk north to reach the pedestrian boulevard that leads to Plaza Bolivar and surrounding

    colonial buildings, the Caracas Cathedral (with coffee at the Museo Sacro), and the preserved colonial birth home of Simon

    Bolivar. To return you may go to La Hoyadasubway station. Unsafe at night.

    Bellas Artes-(BEh-jahs AR-tes)Station Bellas Artes.Walk toward Hotel Alba (former Hilton), cross street to Museos de Bellas

    Artes (Belle Arts and Science Museum). Walk past the Teatro Teresa Carreo (modern Opera House) and at foot of skyscraperyou see across the street, is the excellent Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Contemporary Art Museum). Unsafe at night.

    Parque del Este- Station Miranda. This is Caracas Central Park. Great tropical vegetation, boating lake, much green, and small

    zoo area with crocodiles, tropical birds, monkeys, snakes, etc. Dont miss Harpy Eagle (largest kind). After leaving Parque del

    Este, you may walk west along big Ave to the Centro de Arte La Estancia (Old coffee plantation house) in Altamira.

    Altamira (all-tah-ME-rah)-Station Altamira.Enjoy Plaza Altamira (obelisk), Centro de Arte La Estancia (old coffee plantation

    house). You may go up the west side of plaza Altamira and check out Yamin Gourmet (across from TGI Fridays), then go west to

    Plaza La Castellana, keep going and eat at El Mundo del Pollo on your way to the Centro San Ignacio. Safe at night.

    Centro San Ignacio (Sahn Eeg-NAH-sio)-Station: Chacao .Unique open-air tropical shopping area and icon of Venezuelan life.

    Many cafes. Its also THE SPOT for nightlife with many clubs, bars, and discos. Chacao subway is 5 blocks south. Safe at night.

    Centro Comercial SAMBIL (sahm-BEEL)-Station: Chacao(and 2 blocks South).Largest shopping center in South America

    and icon of Venezuelan life. Many places to eat, stores, entertainment. Safe at night.

    El Hatillo (a-TI-jo):at Altamira station take Metrobus toEl Hatillo,old colonial part of town with Venezuelan arts and crafts

    stores. Try hot chocolate and Venezuelan desserts main plaza shops. MUST go to Hannsi Store. Take trolley bus for tour around

    the area. To return, take metro bus (infrequent service) or microbus back to Chacaito, or taxi (around BsF 80). Safe at night.

    Sabana Grande-Station: Plaza Venezuela-Sabana Grande-Chacaito.The most famous boulevard in the city. Nelsons Place is

    here. Many stores. Great for people watching. Runs from Chacaito station to Plaza Venezuela station. Unsafe after 9:00 pm.

    Las Mercedes-Subway Station: Chacaito (and 4 blocks south). Avenue and side streets with shops, restaurants and cafs. Eat a

    RAY-nah Arepa (Ah-REH-pah) at the arepa shops. Visit the Tolon Fashion Mall and its famous 5th

    floor. Visit the Trasnocho

    Cultural at the Paseo Las Mercedes Mall. Fine Venezuelan chocolates at Cacao. Safe at night.

    Telefrico Avila (AH-vee-lah) (to and fro by taxi) Cable car system that takes you to top of the Avila Mountain in front of

    Caracas (North). There are places to eat, view the city and even skate. The two-way ticket is cheap. Refreshing weather.

    Others (ask me about them. View them through Youtube and web search): UCV, Botanical Gardens, Expanzoo, Zoologico de

    Caricuao, Los Venados, Sabas Nieves, Paseo Los Illustres (Los Proceres), Parque Los Chorros, and more.

    The Telefrico (cable car), museums and parks are closed on Mondays
