Thursday 25 August 2011 was probably the highlight of my career so far. I don’t suppose any Principal everforgets their first set of GCSE results. You spend all year working towards this day and you hope the combinationof challenge and support for staff and students alike will pay off. Add to this the fact we were the first sponsoredAcademy in Staffordshire with students in Year 11 sitting GCSEs and you soon begin to realise the pressure ison. As many of you are aware, not only did we achieve what we set out to do, we smashed every record ofexamination results ever achieved by the predecessor school by some margin. 87% of students achieved 5A* - C

at GCSE, with 48% including English and Maths. This is 12%and 11% respectfully higher than any previous set of results.The A level results also showed the same phenomenalmovement with an average grade per entry of a C andaverage grades per candidate as BBC. As Principal ofLandau Forte Academy Amington, this is all I ever hoped for,that our students are now equipped with the education andqualifications they need to go on and be successful in life.

That was a very busy week as it was also the week that we movedinto our new building, which now feels very much like home. We werevery honoured to receive HRH Duchess of Gloucester to officiallyopen the Academy in September and as you can see from thepictures in this edition of Newslink it was a very special day for allinvolved. The students are justifiably proud of the Academy and allthat we do and all of our guests complimented them for theirbehaviour and conduct during the ceremony.

There have been several other changes to the way the Academy isorganised. We are now on the five term year, which makes planningfor learning so much easier as each term is a set number of weekslong. We have also moved to the extended day with formal learningending at 3.45pm for Key Stage 3 and 3.50pm for Key Stage 4. Thereis then a short break for tea before a great range of Enrichmentactivities take place. As you can see from the reports the studentsare really enjoying participating in the wider life of the Academy.

At Christmas one of our longest serving members of staff retired afterworking on this site for 29 years. I would like to take this opportunityto thank Mr McCarthy for all of his hard work and support over theyears and wish him a long and happy retirement. Our technologytechnician has also retired after 20 years’ service and we also wishMr Boon well. Other staff who moved on to pastures new with all ourgood wishes were Mrs Wilkinson, Mr Fletcher, Mrs Jacqui Davies andMrs Julie Davies.

I look forward to seeing you all again in 2012, the Olympic year.

ROYAL VISIT AND

On Wednesday 21 September, the Duchess of Gloucester visited Landau ForteAcademy Amington to lead its official opening as a brand new building. Theopening was attended by governors, councilors, Tamworth MP ChristopherPincher, Landau Forte President and Founding Sponsor Martin Landau, as well aslocal dignitary and other Academy representatives. During the visit The Duchess ofGloucester unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.

The Duchess arrived at the Academy to be greeted by all of the students and staff who had formed in front of the main entrance.After taking some time to talk to the students she entered the building to be greeted by the various dignitaries, before embarkingon a tour of the new Academy.

During her tour, the Duchess visited some technology andscience lessons where she spoke to students about their timein the new Academy and had a chance to see what sort ofthings they were doing in lessons.

She was then greeted by the StudentLeadership Team. They discussed the projectsthat they were currently involved in and wereasked about their plans for the future.

Following the Duchess’s speech, she unveiled a plaque and signed the visitors’ book tocommemorate her visit. The day was a complete success and we would like to extendour thanks to the Duchess of Gloucester for being present at our official opening.

The Duchess then proceeded tothe Main Reception area where MrMartin Landau gave a shortspeech, giving thanks to all thosepeople who had made this venturepossible. This was followed by aspeech by The Duchess ofGloucester herself about howmuch she had enjoyed her visit.

SLOVAKIA SPECTACULAR

The Comenius school project are joint, crosscurricularinitiatives which give students and staff the chance to workdirectly with those in these other countries on topics ofcommon interest. This builds relationships between studentsacross a variety of European countries. The other countriesinvolved this time were Slovakia, Lithuania, Turkey andPoland. Unfortunately Spain and Italy did not attend aspreviously expected. Emily Allen, Hannah Reynolds, JamesTomson, Dan Mooney, Ryan Stringer and I flew to Bratislavafrom Birmingham International under the supervision of MsDavison and Mr Steggles. We arrived late that night andbooked into our hotel.

The next day we went into Bratislava and toured the city. Wevisited the castle and the museum which had fantastic views overBratislava and Austria. The castle is very picturesque, rectangularwith 4 towers. We then ate in a café in Bratislava and carried onlooking around until we caught the tram back to the hotel. We ateat the hotel later that night before meeting our counterparts thenext day.

I can remember feeling excited at the thought of meeting theother pupils from the other countries as I awoke Monday

morning. We met the other pupils in the hotel reception beforeboarding a coach together to visit Bratislava and the SlovakianParliament building. Later we travelled to the high TatrasMountains and ate the Slovakian traditional dish gnocchi which isa type of dumpling with goat’s cheese and bacon.

On Tuesday we visited a cave in the mountains where bones ofcave bears have been found and put on display and also sawsome amazing stalactite and stalagmite arrangements. Afterlunch we then visited a museum that showed a typical Slovakianhouse and gave us an insight into their traditional life. We spentthe later part of the afternoon mingling with our new friends andgetting to know them.

Wednesday we all took a brisk walk around a lake before taking atrip in the mountain cable car which showed us panoramic viewsacross the High Tatras Mountains. Today would also be the firstnight we would spend with our host family. We travelled by coachto Svidnik. We were now at the far eastern side of Slovakia near tothe Polish border. We had travelled a distance of approximately340 kilometres from Bratislava in western Slovakia to Svidnik inthe east. I was the first to be dropped off with my host family wholived in the middle of nowhere. It was really isolated and my hostparents spoke no English but they were very welcoming, MySlovakian ‘partner’ was an 18 year old girl called Maja. She toldme that we would go to school tomorrow but I was in for a shock!I had to get up at 5.30am as school starts at 7.30am and as wewere so far away I had to get up at this unearthly hour!

Breakfast the next day was a ham sandwich. I was also givenanother ham sandwich for a mid-morning snack. The first lessonwas Economics. The students all sat and worked studiously butmost miraculously without a teacher. When I asked where theteacher was they said she was busy in a meeting but everystudent worked diligently without the teacher being there. I thenwent to several other lessons including English which seemed a

little peculiar but once again very enjoyable. One of the notabledifferences between their school and ours was that they have afifteen minute break at the end of each lesson to eat or drink.We then met up with our European peers to try egg painting atraditional art in Slovakia. We exchanged and shared ourtraditions with each of the other countries in turn explaining theimportance and relevance of each tradition. That evening myhost family made me a traditional dinner. I had pasta stuffedwith jam, another filled with potato and the third filling they couldnot translate and I am not sure what I ate! All three fillings areeaten from the same plate, it was very unusual to say the leastbut edible.

Friday was the last day with our new found Slovak friends. Itwas a very emotional day. I had only known these people for afew days but yet have formed fantastic new friendships withlovely people who had been so kind and hospitable. Gifts wereexchanged as were addresses of home, Facebook and Skype.Many of us were in tears as we said our final goodbyes beforeembarking on a 5 hour train journey back to Bratislava for ourfinal night. We were not returning alone, the Turks andLithuanians returned with us but went their separate ways.

After checking into the hotel we had somefree time to look back and reflect on our week

in Slovakia. But our adventure was not yet over! Dan and Jamescame into our room to chat, when a bang came from their roomnext door. Dan rushed back to find a man ‘legging’ it down thecorridor they had been robbed. The police were called andstatements had to be taken the only problem was the policedidn’t speak a word of English! Between Ms Davison, MrSteggles or Stegs( as he was now affectionately called ) andthe hotel manager the problem got sorted. The manager wasso distraught he actually replaced James and Dan’s stolenmoney himself. We were very lucky that Ms Davison had takenour passports and put them in the hotel safe otherwise we mayhave been in Bratislava for some time.

Saturday our last day was spent in the city again. At 10.20pmwe flew home to Birmingham. I can remember thinking I am notready to leave yet I have found so many amazing people I didn’twant the adventure to end. We arrived at Birmingham justbefore midnight tired but full of so many stories and with lots ofnew found friends who I am still in touch with daily.

I would like to say a massive thank you on behalf of all sixstudents that travelled to Ms Davison and Mr Steggles for beingfantastic and for all the humour not forgetting Mr Beck for beingthe Comenius project organiser and to our hosts in Slovakiawho are such lovely people.

The fabulous space that is the Learning Resource Centre has beencreating a great deal of excitement, we are busy from the moment doorsare opened before 8.00 in the morning until we close at 5.15 in theevening. Students are eager to access the computers but on top of this, loans of bookshave soared since the move into the new build. We took the opportunity to dispose of lotsof old tired stock when we moved and although we still have some empty shelves thereare loads of new books arriving and our students are requesting what they would like tosee on the shelves. The reaction of most visitors that called in during our open evenings was “WOW!”

LEARNINGRESOURCE CENTRE NEWS

Year 7 students had the opportunity in October to select a free book courtesy of Booked Up! This is an initiative run by the Literacy Trustwhere every child in the country in Year 7 receives a free book. Students watched a video where other young people reviewed the books onoffer and authors told the story behind each book. The choice this year was excellent and the students are eagerly awaiting delivery of thebooks they chose.

BOOKED UP!

Accelerated Reading is a tool we are using to help increase the confidence andspeed of our students reading ability. Year 8 have been enrolled in the programmesince the start of Year 7 and a large proportion of the current Year 7 were enrolledon to the scheme in September. The aim is to set an accurate reading age for thestudent which correlates to books they can choose. Students read the book andthen take a computer based quiz which assesses how well they understood thetext. Each book has a point’s value and all the children taking part have been seta target to reach by Christmas. We have also launched the 100% Club, studentswho score 100% on their book quizzes have their name put on the board, if theirname appears three times over a two week period they go into a prize draw.The first winners were Chloe Oates –Year 8 and Ryan McEvoy – Year 7.

HALLOWEENCOMPETITION

Students were invited to submit either aspooky story or a petrifying poem to ourHalloween competition. We had somefabulous entries and the joint winners wereElise Plant and Kirsty James, both in Year 7and the runner up was Bradley Giles in Year9 – well done to you all. The prize winnerspictured below all received books andHalloween goodies for prizes.

AFTER SCHOOLCLUBSThere are activities in the LRC on Monday toThursday each week. Warhammer Club is verywell supported on Mondays. The Warhammertheme continues on Wednesdays when thesession is Warhammer Art. On Tuesday thereare board games on offer and the LRC isavailable for students to do homework orresearch every day before and after school.

MY FIRST TERMA Year 7 Viewpoint.

My first day at the Academy wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Yes it was nerveracking but all the teachers were kind and helpful. If I’m honest, the scariest thing I was worriedabout was finding my way around the school, but it was actually easy. So if that is what you areworried about, just think all the teachers will help you and they won’t blame you if you are late forthe first two weeks. Secondly, if you are worried about making friends all you have to do is beyourself. When I first came here I suppose I was more scared of the older kids; however they arenot that bad, if anything they are kind, funny and hilarious. It was much harder for me this yearthan it is going to be for you, as I had no one to ask where to go, as for you, you can ask anyoneand they will point you in the right direction. The hardest corridor to find is probably G and FO2but I’m sure you’ll find your way after the first week. Hope you’re looking forward to it!!!!!

We were really nervous on the first day of high school, we alsothought that we wouldn’t be able to do any of the work because itwould be too hard. The school has lots and lots of corridors. On thetop floor there are four corridors and on the bottom there are threecorridors. All of the Year 7’s were worried about starting high schoolbut we now feel confident.

We were worried about getting lost, but on about the third day wedidn’t need to use the map we were given. We settled in well in ourforms and met new friends easily. Our favourite subjects are Mathsand Art. We now enjoy high school! Apart from homework lol!

On 29 September, parents and carers of Year 7students were invited to a curriculum evening.On this evening, information about the structureof the Year 7 curriculum, extended learning andthe extended learning project was given by theVice Principal, Miss Barr. The parents andcarers then completed two 25 minute lessons inEnglish, Mathematics or Science. Did anyparents get given homework to complete?

YEAR 6OPEN EVENINGOn 6 October LFAA held its annualopen evening for the parents ofYear 6 students who wish to jointhe Academy in September 2012.It was an incredibly well attendedevening where the parents andstudents were able to join in manyevents such as making key ringsin Technology, watching explosiveScience demonstrations, findingthe coordinates on maps inGeography, completingMathematical quizzes, watchingPerforming Arts students in Musicand Dance, as well as looking atsamples of students work in allcurriculum areas. Parents wereeven treated to their own personalguided tour by our current Year 7students and the Year 11 StudentLeadership Team. An evaluationtook place of the evening where91.7% of the parents said that theAcademy ‘was as good or betterthan they thought the Academywas going to be’ and 83.4% of theparents agreed that ‘the openevening had confirmed theirchoice of applying for a place atthe Academy for September 2012’.Many positive comments werealso left and one parent quoted“The evening has confirmed mybelief that Landau Forte Academyis by far and away the besteducation facility in the area.”

Ms Pickering gave a presentation inthe Theatre about admissions andthe ethos of the Academy. If anyparent was unable to attend theopen evening but would still like tolook around the Academy, pleaseget in touch so a visit can bearranged and a prospectus senthome through the post.

ART AND TEXTILES TRIPSYear 7 and Year 8 students were lucky enough to secure themselves spaces on the department’s recentgallery trips. Both trips were designed to support and extend the curriculum delivered in school.

There will be trip opportunities for Year 9 andYear 10 students during terms 3 and 4.

Year 7 students went to the New Art Gallery Walsall on 11 October.During the day students took part in a variety of activities led bytutors and gallery staff. The main exhibition brings together threeartists whose work is of an abstract nature and created from objects.

Unlikely sculptural materials such as cosmetics, sugar paper, blackboardpaint and brass hinges, or craft in the form of turned wood and tapestry,are used by all three artists. From elements that are sometimes over-familiar, new forms are created that are authentically mysterious.

Year 8 students went to the Pitt Rivers & Natural History Museumin Oxford on 30 September. During the day students had theopportunity to explore exhibits and draw first hand from adiverse range of artefacts.

We have taken a group of Year 10 engineering students to the ‘see inside’engineering event at Toyota. There the students were allowed to visit theassembly points which are usually off limits to students, they also visitedthe apprentice centre and completed some tasks which the apprenticesthemselves have to complete.

D&T NEWS

We are taking a group of Year 10 students on a two daytour to London to see the Olympic sites and to take partin workshops which involve the design of a stadium andhow the products which are to be sold at the Olympicsare designed and made.

We are also taking a group of Year 9 students on a twoday tour to London. Whilst there we will be taking acruise down the Thames looking at the building designs,going to the West End to see The Lion King to study thecustom design and visiting the design museum.

Forte 2 hosted a Halloween Fayre followed by aSpooky Stories Evening on Thursday 20 October,which proved to be a very thrilling event.

Ghosts, ghouls, wizards and witches all came out in suitable spookyattire to raise money in support of our Forte 2 house charity,Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Staff and students enjoyeddressing up and decorating stalls to sell their spooky products andwares. There was a whole host of spooky games and activities,including face painting, cakes for sale, lucky dips with a nasty twist,apple bobbing and much, much more. We had visitors from not onlyour Academy but from local primary schools who came to enjoy the

event. Special thanks to all who gave their time and effort to making the event possible, including parents whoworked on stalls and provided entertainment. We raised a massive £410 for charity.

Year 8 and Year 10 completed the evening in true Halloween fashion when they had an opportunity to perform theirSpooky Stories coursework and classwork which they had been working on during their Performing Arts lessons.This was the first time this has been done in the Academy and provided the students with the chance to practiceperforming to different audiences and to build confidence.

HALLOWEEN FAYRE &SPOOKY STORIES EVENING


GIFTED AND TALENTED ART

The purpose of the workshop is for students to workwith materials and techniques that they wouldn’tnormally get the chance to during lessons. It is achance for them to develop further artistic skills and look at a wider variety of art and concepts.

The students have been looking at the artist Gordon Cheung (who they saw back in Year 7 on a trip to the New Art GalleryWalsall). They have focused on trying to use the same techniques as this famous artist to produce their own piece of art.

Students had to select an iconic image of a celebrity from which they created a stencil. Students then spray painted their stencil.

Students then created a textured effect on the hair of their celebrity using cement followed by coloured inks.

Gifted and Talented Year 9 artists at theAcademy have taken part in a 5 weekworkshop to gain additional and valuabletechniques which they would notnormally get the chance to in lessons.

TICKLED PINKTwo students, Naomi Hewitt and McCauley Uddin worked hard toarrange a Tickled Pink fundraising day at the Academy. Theyencouraged students to go pink and accessorise their uniformwith pink ties, hairpieces, shirts etc. They also arranged a FunRun which took place at the end of the day to raise further fundsfor the very deserving charity.

AUSTRIA SKI TRIPOnce again Landau Forte visited the white slopes of Alpendorf, SportweldAmade in Austria for a week of skiing and snowboarding. 35 students eagerlyattended fitness classes and lessons at the Snowdome.

BOWLED OVER!Emily Allen, a Year 10 student here at the Academy, has beenrepresenting the country in Ten-Pin Bowling. She representedTeam England U16 girls at the Junior Triple Crown in Dublin overthe August bank holiday weekend.

Emily did fantastically well and gained a gold medal in the teamevent and a bronze medal in the trios.


The Austria ski and snowboardingtrip took place on place 17 – 23December 2011.

SPORTS

The Student Sports Leadership Team has grown innumbers and was responsible for leading a number ofsporting events throughout last academic year. Most ofthe team have gained qualifications in either sportleaders officiating and/or coaching and have given uptheir time to help plan and deliver sports opportunitiesfor both the Academy and its cluster schools.

Students have inspired others; a focus with the clusterschools was successful during National Schools SportsWeek; these included sporting challenges being plannedand delivered by Year 10; a handball taster session at theAcademy for Years 3 and 4 by the ‘Change 4 Life’handball club; basketball tournament for Key Stage 2 runby Year 10 assistant coaches; helping with primary schoolsports days, cricket coaching and a charity Zumbasession organised by the ‘Girls Active’ for females only;mums, staff and students.

The Sports Ambassadors and Captains are now in the process of trying to recruit those interested to form a smallworking party (Landau Forte Olympic Campaign Focus Group). This group will be responsible for heading the eventsboth within the Academy and within the wider community. A big event we would like to be involved with will be tocelebrate the London 2012 Olympics as part of a whole Tamworth Town event in June in the castle grounds.

Living the Olympic and Paralympic Values

Year 11 students who started their DofE experience in Year 10 havebecome the first cohort of students within the Academy to go throughand complete their DofE Bronze Award. It was an enjoyable and hugelybeneficial experience for all involved. We now have a group of Year 10students who are well underway with their award. They are alreadydoing well with their volunteering skills and physical activities and havealready completed the practice expedition, which took place inOctober. The assessment expedition is planned for early next year.DofE is a great and worthwhile experience for anyone to undertake. Wewill soon be looking to register a new group of Year 9/10 students.
