Principal’s Report Dear Parents/Carers NEW PRINCIPAL APPOINTED Mrs Jacqui Buchanan has been appointed as the new Principal starting at the commencement of term 4. Mrs Buchanan is currently relieving Principal of Kanwal Public School and has relieved as Principal at other Central Coast schools. I wish Mrs Buchanan all the best as she takes the reins of this great school. BILBY BASH Our primary Aboriginal students will take part in the annual Bilby Bash at Budgewoi Public School this Friday. The children will undertake a number of cultural activities and meet up with other Aboriginal children from our neighbouring schools. ROAD SAFETY Over the past few weeks there have been a number of near misses reported to me with children being picked up and dropped off. Please be very careful when driving in the surrounding streets as our children’s lives are precious. NAPLAN REPORTS At this time the NAPLAN reports have not arrived at school. We will distribute the reports as soon as possible after they arrive at school. UNIFORM The P & C support the school having a uniform that all children are expected to wear. I believe that we have quite a smart uniform but it does not look quite as good if children deviate from what the uniform should be. Good school uniform uses equates to a good school tone. KOOLOORA ASSESSMENT AND RATING The Kooloora preschool underwent the assessment and rating process last week. An independent assessor spent the day observing the children and interviewing the staff, children and parents. A draft report will be forwarded to the school before the official rating is given. I would like to thank Mrs Pezet, Mrs Harris and the rest of the members of staff in the preschool for the excellent work they did in preparing for the assessment and the ongoing great work they are doing. OUT OF AREA ENROLMENTS

We have a number of students who are enrolled and do not live in the school’s drawing area for one reason or another. Siblings of students who are enrolled at our school and live out of zone need to apply through the office for an out of area application. All applications are then assessed on their merits.

RETIREMENT

Mrs Pauline MacMillan has retired from Toukley Public School. Mrs MacMillan has had a long association with the school and I wish her all the best in her retirement. A vacancy on staff will now be generated and this position should be filled prior to the start of 2019.

What’s happening in 2T 2T have been reading Wabi Sabi by Mark Reibstein. The story follows a cat named Wabi Sabi on a journey to learn the meaning of her name. It features Haiku poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. After reading, students were asked to write a Haiku poem about something simple and beautiful.

On Thursday 20th September 2018, stop what you’re doing for one hour and pick up a book. We want

Australians to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading. Take the time to

learn, grow, escape and relax.

In children, reading has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea. For more information see the Reading Hour website: https://www.readinghour.org.au/.

Zone Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 30th August 2018, 42 of our students attended the ZONE Athletics Carnival at Mingara. All students put in a great effort and displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. A huge congratulations to Tori, Miabella, Gemma, Georgia, Traye, Darcy, Cougar and Nait for making it through to the next level at Sydney North. Best of luck to them on the day!

What’s been happening in 1M 1M has been reading the story 'The Way Back Home' written by Oliver Jeffers. In the story a young boy goes on an adventure into outer space. Whilst there he meets a martian and they become friends. In the end the boy and the martian return to their homes but want to remain in touch. 1M were asked to be scientists and design a communication device that would allow them to communicate with aliens and martians throughout the galaxy. We used our designs as the basis for writing. Each student had to explain the main features of their device and how their device works. We had a fun week working though our writing and design process.

Stage 2 Sphero robotics Fun Classes 3/4L, 3T and 3P have spent time this term learning how to program and drive the Sphero robots that our school has recently purchased. They have had heaps of fun and been extremely engaged when learning ways to program (or code) the robots to achieve a certain goal. Last weeks task involved building an obstacle course for their Sphero, then navigating it through the course successfully. This resulted in many discussions about angles and the duration and speed of the robot’s course. Some students even worked on ramps and had to experiment with the incline of the angle in relation to the Sphero’s speed. Some very clever thinkers indeed!

We would like to sincerely thank Miss McBride for visiting our school and for being so open and honest with her responses to the students' questions. We look forward to another visit in the near future.
