    Nourishing Our Roots

  • Chairman's MessageOur Town is like a strong tree, rooted deep in harmony and togetherness. Celebrating multicultural festivals (pages 4 and 5), enjoying cosy breakfasts together (pages 6 and 7), and volunteering for social causes (pages 8 and 9) strengthen these roots and allow us to grow further as a community.

The rise of café culture in Jalan Besar is an offshoot of the neighbourhood's diverse and rich cultural scene. In this issue, we feature two cafés (page 15) that have been bringing in fans from across the island.

As our home thrives, our needs change. Our markets, shophouses and recreational facilities have undergone facelifts and improvements over the years (pages 10 to 13) to meet these changing needs.

I am fortunate to be part of a community where residents, community leaders and the Town Council are fully invested in growing a safe and beautiful home. May we bring this spirit to all our endeavours in life.

    Dr Lily NeoChairman

Cultural traditions are celebrated by residents of all backgrounds across the constituencies. During Pongal in January, we cooked rice with fresh milk in earthen pots until they overflowed. In February, Chinese New Year dinners were held throughout Jalan Besar Town. Hari Raya treats were given out for the festival's celebrations in June. We capture highlights of these exuberant festivities and a durian party.

Sunday breakfast at North Bridge Road Food Centre on 27 January 2019 was a special and cosy affair. The reason: A surprise ministerial community visit, which allowed diners to have a hearty conversation with ministers over breakfast.

The ministerial team touring North Bridge Road that day consisted of Minister for Social & Family Development and Second Minister for National Development Mr Desmond Lee; Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Trade & Industry and Ministry of Education Mr Chee Hong Tat; Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Communications & Information Dr Janil Puthucheary; and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Health Mr Edwin Tong. They were hosted by Jalan Besar GRC MP Ms Denise Phua.

  • The ministers also gave out oranges and chatted with diners, stall owners and residents at the market before heading to Kampong Glam Community Club (CC). They also visited the Block 10 North Bridge Road coffee shop, Community Garden@North Bridge at Block 12 and the Kampong Glam Beach Road Residents' Committee Centre.

At Kampong Glam CC, the ministers sampled delicious treats offered by the Farmers’ Market vendors before joining in the Family Day games in the CC’s hall.

The community visit ended with a dialogue session with grassroots leaders, during which the ministers shared their aspirations for Singapore.

At Community Garden@North Bridge, recycled plastic drums were given fresh coats of paint, making colourful, creative “pots” for a variety of greens. Some of the interesting edible crops found here include lime, mint, capsicum, aloe vera, Japanese kai lan (kale) and stevia.

While learning the uniqueness of the community garden during their visit, the four ministers tried freshly plucked stevia, a plant increasingly used as a natural, healthy sweetener in drinks.

Before the garden’s official opening on 1 December 2018, the Town Council spent around eight months putting together this educative garden. Visitors can learn about the plants from informational banners on display, and by scanning QR codes found on every plant type.

With inclusiveness also as priority, the community garden was designed to be wheelchair accessible. Plastic drums of varying heights were used to cater to people of all ages.

Children can also imagine being behind the wheel, playing pretend in an old truck next to the garden. The truck is given a new lease of life as a play item after it was repainted and refurbished, complete with recycled old benches.

The best way to enhance our physical living environment is also a simple one –just keep it clean! Residents living in Jalan Kukoh joined their Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng MP Dr Lily Neo at the Block 10A pavilion on 26 May to reaffirm this shared goal. The estate’s cleaners are a big part of keeping the estate clean, and they were presented with tokens of appreciation by Dr Neo for their hard work. Dr Neo also provided tips for maintaining cleanliness in communal spaces. These include disposing food waste in covered bags that are difficult for pests and rodents to access, and refraining from feeding pigeons.

Kolam Ayer residents showed they have art in their hearts at the plank painting workshop Garden of HeARTS, held on 26 May at Geylang West CC. Residents and volunteers gathered in groups and armed themselves with paint brushes to let loose their creative painting skills onto white heart-shaped planks. MP for Kolam Ayer Professor Yaacob

Ibrahim joined them in painting the planks, and gamely posed for photos as well. The artworks paid homage to Singapore’s bincentennial, and featured various national motifs, from orchids and the Merlion to the Helix Bridge at Marina Bay.

    欢庆端午节

Whampoa MP Mr Heng Chee How led an early celebration of the Dumpling Festival on 15 May at Whampoa Market and Food Centre along with 100 seniors. A breakfast buffet of scones, fresh fruits, and chee cheong fan (steamed rice noodle rolls) drew smiles from both residents and volunteers. Goody bags filled with daily necessities and dumplings of four different flavours were handed out to residents as singalongs and dances punctuated the cheery atmosphere. Kampong Glam MP Ms Denise Phua was also there to participate in the festivities.

Potong Pasir MP Mr Sitoh Yih Pin visited more than 3500 Merdeka Generation (MG) residents to personally deliver the MG packages to them over a span of two weeks. The residents also received a custom-made crystal as a memento.

  • Comfort and Convenience at Chinatown Complex

    翻新后,牛车水大厦既舒适又方便

Chinatown Complex underwent repairs and redecoration (R&R) works from 1 March to 31 May this year. The upgraded facilities further increased the safety and utility of common areas, making the shopping and dining experience more enjoyable than before.

Chairman of Chinatown Complex Hawkers’ Association Mr Lim Gek Meng shared that improvement works were made to all three storeys in the building. He commended the new light bulbs installed at the level 2 hawker centre, saying: "As the lights are newer, customers can eat comfortably."

The netting installed at the hawker centre keeps birds out, improving hygiene and cleanliness.

Seats at the hawker centre are more secure thanks to new screws.

Addition of anti-slip tiles on areas in front of market stalls makes marketing safer.

Addition of new fans on all levels make the shopping and dining experience more comfortable.

New fittings and tiles for toilets on all three levels.

Markets/food centres currently closed for R&R works:

Blk 210 Lor 8 Toa Payoh: closed from 22 April to 21 July 2019

Blk 29 Bendemeer Road: closed from 2 May to 1 August 2019

    BEFORE

Diner Mr Lim Hong Shen, 32, observed that birds no longer entered the hawker centre, and "now [the eating area] is cleaner". Bird droppings have reduced by 90% since netting was placed around the hawker centre.

Mr Horace Khoo, who sells yong tau foo ingredients at the basement-level market, said that the new non-slip tiles have "made the market cleaner and drier now".

Sundry shop owners at level 1 shared that customers are happy with the new toilets.

The R&R works at the food and shopping complex, which reopened on 1 June, were fully funded and carried out by Jalan Besar Town Council.

A fresh coat of paint brightens the building's facade.

Double Durians was started in March 2018 by three friends who were tired of travelling to eat durian. Owners Jowell Chia, Huang Yong Xian, and Deryk Ng loved to eat durian together, but they did not enjoy having to hop from a regular eatery to a fruits stall just to have their durian fix. Together, they hatched the concept of a one-stop durian café, and Double Durians was born.

“Durians should be much more interesting, and come in more varieties,” Jowell said, hence the name “Double Durians”. Here, you can enjoy durian in a variety of ways, from a creamy durian smoothie (the Double Durian Bomb) to durian pizza, durian crepe cake, and even chargrilled durians. “Musang King durian is known for its buttery, bittersweet flavour. Baking it for an hour intensifies its taste,” he explained.

The café at 8 Hamilton Road offers another surprise: a fully vegetarian menu. Fan favourites include Nasi Padang Curry Mutton, Nasi Lemak Mushroom Rendang, pasta, and hot pot. The café’s use of unique ingredients such as lion’s mane mushroom attracts a loyal fan base.

The cosy, rustic ambience at Double Durians and the convenience of a comprehensive culinary experience draws a steady crowd – one where 60 per cent are repeat customers. “We also offer islandwide delivery,” Jowell said. Nearby Buddhist temples are also regular patrons of this gem in Jalan Besar Town.

What was once a hardware shop peddling scrap and new metals, is now a rejuvenated eatery well-known for its great coffee. Enter Chye Seng Huat Hardware, where coffee lovers will be impressed by the 360-degree coffee bar situated in the centre of this quaintly designed café. This is perfect for curious customers to enjoy a clear view of busy baristas preparing their ordered drinks.

Much of the original building structure was retained by café founder Mr Leon Foo, so as to pay tribute to Jalan Besar’s olden hardware district.

“The name Chye Seng Huat was one that resonated very much with the building’s owner and I; it means ‘to rebuild and prosper again’ in Chinese,” shared Mr Foo.

And prosper it did, with large crowds pouring into the six-year-old café on Tyrwhitt Road to get their hands on freshly roasted specialty coffee. One of the most celebrated items on the menu, Nitro Antimatter (blended oat milk cold brew infused with nitrogen), offers a unique experience. “Customers usually come for our hand-brewed coffee. They also love ordering the Homemade Banana Bread, served with espresso butter,” said Mr Foo.
