It’s about family. It’s about friends.

Hal and Mary Kesler are Friendship Ambassadors at Touchmark. For this couple, it’s more than a title; it’s a lifelong description.

“We love to get people together to have a good time,” says Hal.

Friendship has always started at home. Hal worked and traveled extensively for IBM, and Mary worked as a secretary at a girls’ school, but the couple and their children made a point of visiting family and enjoying summers at nearby Shawano Lake. More than 50 year later, the lake tradition continues with the now 14-plus grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.

“We have a Fourth of July Olympics with each family on a team,” says Mary. There are numerous competitions, including a kayak race. “Not all the kids are used to the kayaks, and they flip them over—and have a good time,” chuckles Mary.

Extending friendshipsShortly after moving into Touchmark, Hal became a Friendship Ambassador. Soon, both Mary and Hal were welcoming new residents.

“We had just gone through the experience of moving, and we knew how we would like to be introduced to the community,” says Hal. “I also enjoy that we’re friends today with many of the people we welcomed.”

The couple also enjoys meeting up with friends at the Friday cocktail hours, meals, at the Touchmark Troubadours, and during card games.

“I go around and talk with everyone. I’m very people oriented,” says Mary.

In sharing why they enjoy Touchmark, Hal mentions the friendships with team members.

“The whole administrative side of Touchmark is wonderful. They respond, and you can sit and have a conversation,” says Hal. “You don’t feel

like you’re talking to the boss but that you’re talking to a participant. They are all caring.”

The couple is in the process of moving to an apartment from their cottage. Even though they have enjoyed the Touchmark cottage—especially the full-of-light kitchen—they’re looking forward to the comfortable apartment and being able to use the range of services and amenities at the community. “It’s one reason we picked Touchmark,” says Hal.

Mary adds, “It will be nice, and we’ll be even closer and able to participate in even more activities.”

… and, naturally, share more joy with friends.

Touchmark team members Margie Arpin, Melissa Poulsen, Katie Escribano, Katie VanLankvelt, and Executive Director Barb Pandolfo get into the island spirit during the Jamaican Me Crazy Happy Hour.

Community fun!

A group from Touchmark took a three-day trip to the windy city. Resident Joan Schnettler shared, “I am especially thankful, because at my age and being a widow, I would never have had the opportunity to do what we did on this trip. Thank you for extending my horizons.” The group stopped at restaurants, museums, and stayed in hotels.

Eat less. Eat better. Move more. “Unhealthy diets and a lack of physical activity in the US cause more health loss than smoking, alcohol, or drug use.”

– Ali Mokdad, PhD, director of Middle Eastern Initiatives and professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME)

The United States has made significant health improvements over the last two decades, including:

• Lower disease burden rates since 1990 of nearly all childhood conditions and diseases

• Lower mortality rates for people at every age since 1990

• Significant reduction in death and disability from HIV/AIDS

But Canada and other countries in Europe and Asia are improving at a faster rate.

Why is the US less healthy than other countries? The researchers point to poor dietary practices and inadequate physical activity as two of the driving forces. In fact, dietary risks moved ahead of smoking as the leading cause of disability and death in the study released recently in the American Journal of Medicine.

Christopher Murray, MD, DPhil, is a professor of Global Health at the University of Washington and director of the IHME. He presented the findings of the study at an

event hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama as part of her Let’s Move! campaign.

Bad choices and risky behaviors fall in the category of “lifestyle-related risk factors”. Genetics are important but not as important as lifestyle practices. Touchmark recognizes the importance of providing healthy lifestyle options in its 11 communities in the US and Canada.

To find out more about the Full Life Wellness & Life Enrichment offerings at Touchmark, contact any member of the Full Life team. And ask about Touchmark’s celebration of Active Aging Week, coming up in September. It’s never too late to gain the benefits of eating better and moving more!
