AGENDA

Subject Based Banding (SBB)

Intent of SBB

•To provide greater flexibility to the studentsthrough offering a combination of standard andfoundation subjects depending on his / herstrengths.

•The student can stretch the potential of hisstronger subjects and work on the fundamentalsof the weaker subjects.

How does Subject-based Banding work?

Example of North View’s Recommendations

E.g. A student scores at

least 80 marks for

EMS and at least

85 for MTL

4 Standard Subjects and HMT

How does Subject-based Banding work?

In NVPS, if the student passes 3

subjects but scores

a low failure grade for MTL,

we offer 3S and 1 FMTL

Important factors to consider in making school-based decisions:

• Individual subject score as well as overall score / performance of student.

•Apart from the P4 end-of-year examination results, schools could also consider performance in previous assessments.

Important factors to consider in making school-based decisions:

•Each student’s aptitude, ability andmotivation for each subject.

• It is important to equip each student with astrong foundation in literacy and numeracy toprepare him/her for enhanced long term optionsin the future.

Important Information

After the P4 SA2 exams

1. Teachers go through the exam scripts with thestudents.

2. Scripts will be returned to parents to check.

3. Report card and letter with school’srecommended subject combination will begiven to parents.

4. Parents are to carefully consider the school’srecommendations.

Important Information

5. Parents can

•Accept the school’s recommendation

•Reject the school’s recommendation and thenpropose another combination for the student

If necessary, the school will meet the parents todiscuss the best combination before finalising thesubject combination for P5.

After Primary 5…

• Students who have done well at the end of the Primary 5 will carry on with their subject combination in Primary 6 and take the PSLE with that combination.

• Students who fail badly in their Standard Subjects will be asked to take those subjects at the foundation level. We will engage the parents in that decision.

Success of SBB Depends on

•Strong professional judgement of the school in offering of subject combinations.

• Informed parental decisions at the end of P4.

For the purpose of S1 posting, Foundation level AL A to AL C will

be mapped to AL 6 to AL 8 of Standard level subjects

respectively, to derive a student’s overall PSLE Score.

Similar to the current PSLE scoring system, this mapping is based

on the learning and assessment load of the subjects, and informs

students of their readiness to access the curriculum at the

secondary level.

Example 2

A student’s PSLE Score is the sum of the four AL scores across his/her Standard and

Foundation subjects.

Students taking Foundation subjects are eligible for the Express Course, as long as they

meet the course placement criteria.

With Full Subject-based Banding in secondary schools, students may also take subjects

at a higher level for those that they are strong in.

SBB & Secondary School Admission

• In calculating the PSLE Achievement Level (AL)scores, different expectations of Standard &Foundation subjects will be taken into account.

•Therefore offering subjects at the foundation levelis not a disadvantage to a student at the PSLE.

continue to have the flexibility to offer HMTL to students, if they are

assessed to have high ability and interest in MTL and are able to take

HMTL without affecting their performance in other subjects.

ELIGIBLITY CRITERIA FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL HMTL

(i) PSLE Score of 8 or better

OR

(ii) PSLE Score of 9 to 14 inclusive; and attain
