We know a few tribes who think they're pretty smartBut we are good at sport, like woodshop and art

We're upper seniors, we're so strong and tallWith our char and good looks, we're a hazard to all

Oohhh ohhhhh we are algonquinsOohhh-ohhhhh we are something else

Okay, so you go to cali...that don't impress me muchSo you, get to surf but have you gotta fart

Now don't get me wrong yeah we think you're alrightBut that won't kill bugs that are flyin round at night

That don't impress me much!!

I never knew a guy who carried a mirror in his pocketAnd a comb up his sleeve, just in case

But when you go to danbee you know you really gotta rockit

Cos heaven forbid we lose our style and grade.

Oohhh-ohhhhh we are algonquinsOohhh-ohhhhh we are something else

Okay, so you got female staff...that don't impress me much

So they got the looks but do they have the guns

Don't get me wrong yeah we think you're all rightBut we would like someone to tuck us in at night

That don't impress me much!!

We're one of those tribes, some call us beasts or machines

We are so fast and so tough we're win camp singDanbee girls wanna kiss us goodnight

Come on people tell us, you must be jealous right

Oohhh-ohhhhh we are algonquinsOohhh-ohhhhh we are something else

So you got T-bod, but he talks a lotDon't get me wrong yeah we think you're alright

PEOPLEtribal heads 2009junior camp

TJC is certainly lucky this year to have its all-star crew back

from last year! That’s right, Vicki McNeil is back with the Apaches (and Iroquois), Laura Povah is with the Iroquois, and Jake Muhlbeier is tribal head for the Mohicans. If you thought you had a busy winter, you probably have NOTHING on this motley crew that has been keeping active all over the world! Vicki has been seeing a nutritionist twice a day to deal with her beetle-eating addiction. She says it has been going “well, but no other food can really match the crisp hard shell of a delicious beetle.” We wish her luck. Laura has been a personal shopper at a Nordstrom in London and says “I try to tell people in the store all the time that you can just wear the same t-shirt and shorts every day and nobody will notice!” She then commented that “I guess the rest of the world isn’t like camp. Oh well.” Jake was proud to announce that he got a gym membership early in the off season, and says that his goal for next winter is to go for the first time because he’s “heard that it has great facilities in addition to the parking lot.”

lower senior camp

LSR campus has two of the most energetic people from opposite sides of the pond in charge this year. Ben Schein is the tribal head for the Navajos

and Tom Bodily is the tribal head for the Cheyennes. The two are glad to work together as the shortest tribal heads in MKN history, and (as you see in the picture) sometimes use the walkie talkies to talk to each other from two feet away. They avoid disagreements because they have a policy that all disagreements on lower senior camp (including the dreaded “who will run assembly?” argument) will be decided by a game of rock paper scissor. It is important to note that we’re very glad to have Ben with us this summer, because he had a really rough experience in May that almost made it impossible for him to graduate from American University (in DC) and come to MKN. He was at a beach sunbathing shirtless with a group of his closest friends and was mistaken for an escaped bear from a local zoo! After eight days at the zoo, he convinced the zookeeper that he had to finish his education and history degree and get to camp!!!

He was released, but MKN Today! was told that the zookeeper was a bit skeptical that Ben was not the escaped creature. We’re also lucky to have Tom with us, because he has spent the year trying to convince the American government that he is worthy of a Visa. He commented “I don’t know why they didn’t think I do anything with my life...I have taken up Irish dancing and am in the process of losing 30 pounds!” Either way, we’re glad to see him back at camp this year!

upper senior campUSR camp always sounds like Hannah Montana is playing, right? You can thank Jordan Petrie for that. Jordan is the tribal head for the Cherokees, but more importantly he was just recognized by the Canadian government for having the largest percentage of his iTunes library made up of Disney and Hannah Montana music for any male under the age of 55.

He was also sure to mention that he gives better hugs than Chad Winton, the tribal head for the Algonquins. Chad was almost too outraged to respond, but did say he is Mah-Kee-Nac’s BEST off-season free-loading gypsy, and that Jordan gets all of his skills from Chad. Greg Walbergs, tribal head for the senecas wasn’t sure which of his two coworkers is more gypsy-like, but he did mention that he meets a lot of such people as a “bartender” at home (he works for Jamba Juice). He was busy packing for California during the interview and was unsure if Senecas do anything else during the summer.

Page 32: Totem 09

31

PEOPLEthe off season: mkn styleEvery year returning campers get off their buses at MKN knowing

they will find the grass cut, the infield raked, their bags unpacked, and their friends waiting to enjoy the summer together. Some

people at MKN might wonder, what makes all of this possible?

Let’s rewind to the end of last summer and find out. It turns out that people work for camp during the WINTER!

So we dug deep to figure out who’s around, what they do, and to figure out if the rumors were true that Lynn was working for camp up until the SECOND that Madeline was born this past year.

The MKN winter crew consisted of Bunkie, Lynn, Kevin, Molloy and Lauren. Beginning in September, after the bags had been packed, the buildings locked, and the

summer weather gone, the crew returned home to begin planning again for the summer of 2009. But not everyone returned home together. Kevin, having decided he would like be Canadian again (at least for a year), moved across the border, built an igloo, and got Skype so he could begin recruiting returning staff and interviewing new staff for the summer to come. Of course, all of this had to be done when he wasn’t busy ice-fishing and dog sledding back and forth for supplies at the general store.

The work in the US of A was no picnic, though. According to Bunkie, the preparation of a summer at camp is equivalent to “setting up a small town every year. ” The authors of MKN Today! think that Bunkie should be made the town mayor.

So, while Kevin was wintering in the arctic, in White Plains, (following several coffee breaks and some record breaking games of Snood) Bunkie, Lynn, and Molloy set about their task of welcoming new faces

Keeping camp hot even when White Plains and Canada are

cold...

this is the MKN Winter

to the MKN family and catching up with returning members. In between traveling to different camping conferences and touring other camps around the country, Bunkie and Lynn found fame on their very own professional bowling tour where they reunited with MKN’s campers. As the summer grew closer, however, Bunkie and Lynn happily put away their bowling balls to begin making the necessary arrangements to get camp up and running. Preparations had to be made for food, water, fun, and, not to forget, top-notch security (thanks, Tom!). Getting Mah-Kee-Nac ready for campers each year requires months of attention which all lead up to the best two moths of the year.

PEOPLEprogram cabana-rama

What? This isn’t the cycling room anymore! If you’ve just found yourself in a newly windowed former closet you are most likely in the incredible

program cabana! And if you didn’t stick around long enough to find out who works there, what they do, and what the vibe is like...MKN Today! is here to your rescue.

During independent interviews the cabana’s three full-time residents (Jenn, Ben, & Coach Jon) didn’t talk about what you would think, They didn’t mention the time it took to plan olympics, carnival, tournaments, big trips, or regular program...so what did they have to tell us? That the room has “the best sound system and ceiling fans on camp!”

Ben said that “campers and counselors enter the cabana with a dream in their heart, and before they leave it has been transformed into a reality.” Jenn still wears a bathing suit to work because she thinks that she’s still at the waterfront, but Coach Jon said that he “tries to be understanding.”

The irony of calling the office the “cabana” is that these three are some of the most hard working at Mah-Kee-Nac, and their office is less of a tropical paradise and more of a pen filled with wild anamials and fireworks. But, of course, they take time for breaks. In addition to daily meditation sessions (lead by Ben), the group went out on the waterfront one happy Tuesday to have a little fun (see picture below). It turns out that they’ve all got some pretty sick moves on a wakeboard!

Thanks, cabana folk for keeping camp afloat! (get it, they’re on a boat?!)

PEOPLEthe kruger lodge back hallwayWho doesn’t love the new office?

Jack renovated it in 12 days with just a hammer and a pair

of tweezers. Of course, you’d think the coolest new components of the office that make it awesome are the spacious layout, air conditioning, the additional door to outside and the strangely locked old one, Bunkie’s telescope, and the like...but really it’s the BACK HALLWAY and its inhabitants.

For those of you who don’t frequent the back hallway (these are people who don’t get paid, take tours, or like office

supplies), you might not know the three Mah-Kee-Nac icons that work back there: Josh Bailey (JB), the storage closet, and Sean the accounting intern. Lauren refers to the back hallway as her backyard or “Lulu’s playground”...but we wanted to go straight to the source and learn from the three who know it best.

We asked each of these three to tell us what they think about the back hallway and their answers are printed with their pictures below. It’s almost hard to imagine that three people this awesome are able to co-exist in such close quarters.

Sean is from Long Island, NY and attends the University of Pittsburgh. He is majoring in accounting and finance and hopes to one day own his own store that sells dolphin food and lawn mowers. He spends his days managing the camp finances, making sure camper canteen funds are in order, and he teaches second period hockey for fun.

JB: “I’m really mad that my office is the furthest from the bathroom.”

Storage Closet:“Why doesn’t anyone

sort the colored paper when they

bring it back from the copier?”

Sean:“I don’t have a quote about the hallway, bro.”

He says that his favorite thing to do with his spare time is to change people’s salaries in the computer, laugh about it, and then change them back. He says that he loves living in the “bunk d bromance” because he is a “certified bro for life.”

JB is a different story. He has worked at camps (day camps and sleep away camps) for his entire life. He has also worked as team chef and morale coach for

several minor league baseball teams. He is the tour director at MKN, so he meets tons of families that are checking camp out. He walks the tour route 15-20 times a week by himself because he “has a huge fear of tripping and falling on a tour and crying” so he has learned the MKN terrain, hills, rocks, bodies of water, etc. like the back of his hand. He lives in NYC but is from Cleveland, and sometimes he misses home and forces Staci to “talk Ohioian” to him so that he can re-connect with his past (without electricity or running water).

The storage closet had no comment.

PEOPLEspf 5,000: camp moms

Clara “IKEA” Norstroem

Tired of her life as a milk-maid in Uppsala, Clara

Norstroem decided to leave Sweden and

embark on a awareness campaign to inform the

world that Swedish fish (although tasty) do not come

from Sweden! As part of her efforts, Clara decided

to take a job as an au pair in New Jersey in hopes

of educating some children on the

subject of Swedish fish. Rumor has it

that the alleged family didn’t even

have children, just six Chihuahuas they

felt deserved a Swedish nanny.

After her work in NJ, Clara decided to

prolong her stay in the US on account

of her love for Chex Mix. “Chex-Mix,

much like Swedish Fish, is not available

in Sweden and I fear for my existence

without it!” Clara shared this secret

with MKN Today! as her eyes were

brimming with tears. At the end of the

summer, Clara’s plan is to use her camp money to

buy enough chex-mix to fill up the drawers of her new

IKEA desk that she was able to build in 37 seconds.

Clara is the camp mom on lower senior camp, so she

is often seen giving pedicures and foot massages to

Schein and T-Bod. Ask her for one!

Have you ever wondered about the hand behind the sunscreen? MKN Today! reveals the truth about the 2009 camp moms:

Clara and Kara!

Kara “Mo’ Sunscreen” Solomon

After a long year of learning at U-MASS Amherst

Kara Solomon decided to escape to the

Berkshires for a relaxing early-summer getaway.

Unfortunately, her stay at Canyon Ranch Spa and

Resort was cut short after she accidentally ordered a

3,000 dollar mud bath. Kara’s reaction to the mix-up...“I

didn’t think dirt and water could cost so

much! It was worth it though.”

In an effort to remain in the Berkshires

and recover her savings, Kara decided

to come work for MKN where she

could spend the summer on the

lovely Stockbridge Bowl. Kara very

enthusiastically told MKN Today! that her

experience at camp has been far more

fun than sitting with cucumbers on her

eyes. She also informed us that in her

free time she has been testing all of the

mud around camp and has been able to

re-create the exact mixture that broke the bank. Kara

is currently working on bottling the mud and selling it in

expensive boutiques in order to pay for college. We

wish her the best of luck.

Kara is the camp mom for TJC. She is often found

singing alone “I work in TJC, and ya’ll know me!”

PEOPLEis there a doctor in the house?Of course there’s a doctor in the house! As well as a full health center with some incredible, hard-working, humorous nurses! The health center is certainly the place to go to feel better – because, as they say, laughter is the best medicine! In all seriousness, though, the health center staff knows its stuff and really wants campers and counselors to feel great so as to be able to have the best MKN summer possible!

The Mah-Kee-Nac health center is a busy place that is staffed by some incredible people from all over the country! This year’s health center crew includes Teresa (California), Julie (New Jersey), Marcia (Louisiana), Leasa (Iowa), Jen (Missouri), and Staci (Ohio).

Each of the members of the health center staff is certainly here for a different reason. Teresa said that she “met Coach Jon in January of this year in California, he seemed nice so she crossed the country to see MKN for herself.” Jen said she “had a dream that being a nurse at MKN was her destiny” and Staci was a bit less divinely inspired and came because she realized one day how badly she “needs a job!!”

Whatever the reason that the staff is here, there is no question that the HC is the #1 location in camp to find some TLC, and the nurses and doctor are on call 24/7 to help campers and counselors with any

How do you spend 7 weeks playing with medical supplies?

The health center staff tells all!

and all medical concerns! The health center staff commented during their interview with MKN Today! That they “absolutely love seeing all of the different personalities of the kids at camp! Well, except sick personalities…we like making people get better!”

And they mean it, one time Teresa spent 14 consecutive hours nursing a salamander back to good health, imagine what good care she takes of the boys of MKN!

The copyright is pending with the American Medical Association for the “Mah-Kee-Nac Special” to be included in the list of valid

treatments for 99% of ailments. This high-tech medical procedure is well known around camp, and includes saltine crackers and ginger ale. Rumor has it that the health center, in the summer of 2009 alone, has gone through seven thousand gallons of ginger ale!

Please be sure to head to the health center to visit the staff or if you don’t feel well. They might chat your brains out, they might make you smile, but they will definitely get you back to feeling in tip-top shape!

And, Jen, we’re pretty sure that teddy bear’s heart is beating just fine!

PEOPLEwhat happens 46,000 times a summer?Over the course of the summer

the kitchen staff makes at least 46,000 total plates of food for

MKN campers and counselors! That’s unreal! Since this incredible work does so much for camp, we decided to sit down with this awesome crew and learn more about them!

This year, Chef Bob’s kitchen staff includes: Kaitlin (Kansas), Leah (Kansas), Andy (Kansas), Yulia (Ukrane), Marshea (Kansas), Shanice (Kansas), Anna (Russia), Mike ( professional nomad), Xyrus (Kansas), and John (Kansas).

What are all these people from Kansas DOING here? Well, Emily in the office told us that Kansas called and was upset that we had taken half of their population to Massachusetts for the summer. It’s okay, though, we’re very happy to have them all here -- they are very talented chefs and the MKN dining hall certainly has the BEST CAMP FOOD! What most people don’t know is that Bob runs a culinary school in Kansas City and staffs the kitchen with his students so that he can be sure that only the best work at MKN.

This group of course makes all of the MKN meals and snacks, keeps the dining hall in ship shape during the day, and they all claimed that working to multi-task is essential to get all the work done well and on time. John claimed that he is sure every single day to make time, no matter how busy it is, to exfoliate. Xyrus (“cupcake”) was talking about how working to update his online statuses and cook at the same time is “difficult, but completely important nonetheless.”

It’s important to listen to what Xyrus says, though, because according to the entire kitchen staff “he is better at supervising than anything else,” so it seems that taking his advice will put you on the fast-track to a career in management.

We wanted to interview Mike as well to talk with him about his summers at camp, what keeps him coming back, and what he likes about his job. On the way to the interview, though, MKN Today! was stopped by a crew of nurses that told us about his condition, where he gets bloody noses from thinking too hard. We had to back off, and Mike appreciated it, but we hear he’s a great hand in the kitchen!

It’s always cool to talk to people at camp because everyone has such a cool story; you meet people from all over the world with really cool skills and life stories. Andy (“the human torch”), for instance, came to camp instead of working for the circus! His incredible ability to light himself on fire is apparently highly entertaining!

If you don’t recognize Kaitlin by sight, you probably do know her adorable 2-year old daughter Myah. Kaitlin loves camp so much that she is trying to figure out a way to have her wedding here. And, of course, the counselor of her choice will throw her wedding cake in the dining hall.

Please be sure to thank the kitchen staff the next time you have a chance! They make soooooo much food from scratch every day! And its so good!

PEOPLEmy first summer: spotlight on bunk 3It’s safe to say that everyone at MKN knows that coming

to sleepaway camp is one of the coolest things in the world... but it can be really nerve wracking at first! So MKN

Today! ventured to the TJC campus and stumbled across bunk three... a bunk that is almost entirely new campers! We wanted to talk with them about how their experience has been so far at MKN, and what the transition to the camp lifestyle has been like.

The bunk is made up of: Harris (9), Mickey (9), Noah (9), Nathan (8), Jared (8), Andrew (9), and Aidan (9). Andrew was here last year and Noah came last year for mini-camp. It’s also really cool that Noah and Aidan are brothers, so even though they’re away from home they have that sense of family at camp! Their counselors are Sam, Andy, and Rebecca.

And here’s what they had to say:In the interviews with each of these awesome campers, they all commented on how much fun they’re having, how great Mah-Kee-Nac is, and how coming away for a summer was not as scary as they thought it would be!

Harris: “I love all of the activities and participating in them! I really love sleep away camp and I’m having such a great time!”

Mickey: “Mah-Kee-Nac is really fun! Everyone in my bunk is really nice and I’ve been learning new things like lacrosse, archery, and new moves in soccer.”

Nathan: “I’ve been learning lots of new things and meeting lots of people...camp is an awesome experience especially at MKN!”

Noah: “The pie eating contest was so fun to watch! My counselors are so nice and they’ve been there for me since the first day.”

Aidan: “I really like my counselors, they always have such good ideas, like for carnival, and they’re always there to cheer us up and help us out.”

Andrew: “I’m loving my second summer at camp...I can show around my friends who are new. Also, I really like photography so it’s great that Rebecca is my counselor! This summer I’ve been down at the waterfront a lot, learning how to waterski and wakeboard.”

Jared: “This place is SO cool! The best football coach is my counselor, and I’m just busy having fun all day! Also, my friends were great, during Olympics even though my bunkmates weren’t on my team they all still congratulated me on getting the Joe Kruger award. It felt really good and I’m having an awesome summer!”

so mkn2009 summer themeSomething really cool

about summers at MKN is that the senior

staff comes up with a theme for each summer to keep everyone on track and focused on the kind of personal growth that is super possible to accomplish at camp!

This summer’s theme, carpe diem, of course means to SEIZE THE DAY! You can see on this page some great examples of campers & counselors seizing the day and talking about what the term means to them and what they’ve done at camp so far in this respect.

Just as much as camp is for personal growth,

camp is for humor... and the carpe diem theme was not exempt from its treatment. The theme was commonly known as “seize the carp” and fishing jokes abounded (see photo above). But, on and off of the pontoon boat, people at MKN have been seizing the day! See the examples on these pages and be sure to congratulate your friends and counselors on a job well done!

By taking risks and trying things that are somewhat intimidating, you grow a lot as a person. Hopefully everyone at Mah-Kee-Nac this summer was able to experience this feeling of accomplishment from a job well done!

“Think positive thoughts always!”

- Lynn

“Seize. The. Carp.”- Michael (Bunk 13)

The carpe diem theme certainly does not only apply to campers. Two members of MKN’s key staff decided to seize the day (and the salad bar) this summer and use camp as an opportunity to lose some weight! Both Kevin Lilley and Jake Muhlbeier commented that

camp is the perfect place for personal growth and they both did an excellent job! In their own version of “The Biggest Loser” they supported, motivated, and empowered each other through this endeavor and the Mah-Kee-Nac community could not be prouder! Check them out!

42

so mknthe mkn wayHow would you best describe Mah-Kee-Nac to a friend? The

MKN way is probably a really good place to start because it definitely underlies everything that we do here at camp.

The MKN way is the following five characteristics: pride, growth, empowerment, connection, and fellowship. See below to see how Bunkie and Lynn understand the MKN way, and how it underlaid the MKN summer of 2009.

mkn way in ‘09: a note from bunkie & lynn We live it every day here at camp. It is how we make our decisions. At camp, our key staff cannot be at all places at all times so we give the tool of the MKN Way. If ever faced with a difficult decision or challenged to have a difficult conversation, the MKN Way guides us all. Do I feel good about the decision I made? Have I grown from this experience? Do I have a full understanding of the situation so I can make an informed decision and feel proud of it? Am I supportive of my peers and the MKN community? Am I involved in what we do at camp and have worked on a positive relationship with my bunkmates? The list really can go on, all questions derived from our five words of the MKN Way.It is not a rarity to hear, “That’s how we do it at MKN”, or “Let’s do it this way, the MKN Way”. Our key staff use these terms often and we have frequently heard the term used on the baseball field, the football field, the tennis courts, and how we work at the woodshop, or art and media, and especially to the bunks. It is with pride that we use the words of the MKN Way. They have been carefully chosen and guide our every decision. We hope all members of our community here take this mentality home and it extends a little piece of MKN all over the world.

The Senecas of 2009 certainly took the MKN way to heart...which is not surprising because they are the campers who have been with us for the longest amount of time. Their beautiful gift to camp is pictured below, and certainly symbolizes the MKN way literally and figuratively because it is a fantastic act of generosity. See more MKN way-type behaviors by the Senecas and all of camp on the adjoining page!

so mknmkn gives back

Seneca Service

The Seneca tribe this summer did some outstanding service in the Berkshires. Early in the summer they went to a local nursing home to hang out and show the residents what the MKN spirit

is all about. In fact, they taught the crew the infamous game of One Pitch and a bunch of people there jumped in! The Senecas also helped at this year’s Stockbridge Bowl Assoication day, serving drinks and greeting our lake neighbors! Thanks, Senecas!

Project Morry Swim-a-Thon

According to their website, Project Morry is a nonprofit, year-round youth development organization dedicated to giving disadvantaged children enriching learning opportunities. In

the summer, boys and girls, ages 9 to 18, attend a residential camp, free-of-charge, in the Catskills of New York. Without the support of Project Morry these experiences would not otherwise be available to these children. As a result of Project Morry’s network of support, these children gain increased social skills, enhanced self-esteem, positive core values and a great sense of personal responsibility.

The success of Project Morry is evident throughout schools and communities where fewer than 50% of incoming ninth graders graduate from high school in these communities. 100% of the

young people who have completed the Project Morry program have completed high school on time and have graduated to pursue higher education, military service or join the workforce as responsible citizens. Overall, Project Morry gives hope, resources and encouragement to children who otherwise would become victims of a disadvantaged life.

MKN’s contribution to this organization is quite substantial. We figure, what better way to share the love of camp than raising money for other children to have the

opportunity to go, right? Absolutely! That is why Mah-Kee-Nac’s finest made a splash at the pool swimming laps for Project Morry. Paul Tanahill commented on the event’s success by stating how enthusiastic everyone was at the pool that day. Not to forget, the Senecas’ hard work counting laps! Paul said, “they were amazing!”

Holding the camper record for this year, with 120 laps, Ben Bushell certainly kept the Senecas counting! On the counselor side, Rachael Thomas swam 208 laps and caused some of the Senecas to fall into the pool as a result of mental exhaustion. At the end of the day, however, everyone who swam for Project Morry made an impact far beyond numbers, even far beyond words.

America’s Camp

Following September 11th, Jed Dorfman (Director of Walt Whitman), Danny Metzger (former director of Mah-Kee-Nac), and Jay Toporoff (Director of Danbee), decided they wanted

to positively affect the lives of those who lost family as a result of the tragedy. Unanimously, they agreed the best way to do something positive was to do what they know best: CAMP!

In the summer of 2002, America’s camp kicked-off right here at MKN. Having grown immensely, America’s Camp is now held at Camp Danbee, where there is actually enough dining space to accommodate everyone. During this one-week extravaganza, campers have the opportunity to participate in any activity they want, from water-sports, to beading and knitting! As is camp tradition, there also has to be a trip to an amusement park, Carnival, Polar Bear Club, as well as, plenty of campfires!

The goal of America’s Camp is still the same as the day it began; offering children who lost a parent or sibling in the attacks, one entirely free week of fun and a chance to feel connected with a community of other people who understand their loss. T-Bod said that “the relationships formed between my two co-counselors and our campers over the past six years are inexplicable. It is a truly unforgettable experience and I will hold my memories from there close to me forever.” What a great place!

Juniors knew something was afoot, but it was not until they returned to their bunks after breakfast that they discovered it was College Day. On their beds were letters inviting them to be a part of either Bunkie’s LSU or Lynn’s Villanova team. The boys hurriedly changed into appropriate colors – either yellow or purple for LSU or blue for Villanova – and headed to their morning events; a rotation comprising speed cricket, handball and water basketball. Villanova took an early lead, but LSU kept their spirits up and scored highly for their cheers.

After lunch, the energy was still high as the teams competed in a massive game of grenade on the lacrosse pitch. Tennis balls went flying and it was neck-and-neck going into the final event – a cup relay in which each team had limited time to get as much lake water as possible into their bucket situated up the hill by passing plastic cups to one another along a line. The team with the most water in their bucket at the end would be crowned the victors and so both teams fought valiantly to secure a win. Despite fast-moving hands, not a single cup was dropped and so it was a tense wait whilst Team O determined which team had collected the most water. Eventually, Villanova was announced as the winners and so their Head Coaches, Adam and Leo, had the pleasure of emptying their bucket of water all over LSU’s Head Coaches, Rachael and Sam, much to the boys’

Special eventslsr survivorJust as Transformers was about to conclude in Kruger

Lodge for LSR movie night, the Survivor logo flashed across the screen leading into a short video in

which the Survivors identities were revealed. Behind the stage curtains, the chosen counselors, with tikis in-hand, anxiously awaited their first immunity challenge of LSR Survivor 2009 and the assignment of their teams.

Sprinting across junior field to LSR campus the survivors set off to find hidden envelopes with their teams concealed inside of them. The first survivor to return to Kruger Lodge with their envelop, therefore winning immunity, was Justin Taylor, survivor for team Boran. As more survivors found their envelops and returned to Kruger Lodge only two were left searching on LSR. James Waterman, of team Viveros, and Katie Peduzzi, of team Sambura, looked frantically only to discover that they had been outwitted by another survivor who had moved their envelopes. Together they returned to Kruger Lodge last, therefore both being sent to spend a night on exile island (a tent on LSR campus).

The next day of Survivor 2009 kicked-off at evening activity with the first tribal council, at which time all of the teams and survivors cast their votes before competing in an octathalon. After the team activity, the votes were counted and revealed that both survivors Milty, of team Ulong, and Jenn Wilkins, of team Soliantu, had been voted off.

Day 2 of Survivor started of on the right foot, or rather one foot for each of the survivors, as the first immunity challenge of the day was a three legged race. Paired-off, the survivors took off around camp struggling to catch each other and remain standing. The first pair to arrive safely back at the LSR basketball courtwere Neil Howard (Casaya) and Jake Lent (Moto Maji).

Neil and Jake had then won immunity for the tribal council following the challenge where Jenn Wilkins revealed she had found the hidden immunity idol sometime in the night allowing her to rejoin the game as a competitor. Justin and Brad were the next two to be voted off of Survivor 2009.

The teams then competed in a pool relay which required the teams (campers) to search for different colored golf balls that their survivors then had to carry while racing around camp. Jenn finished this challenge first.

In the second immunity challenge the survivors tried to outlast each other while standing on one foot (again!) on top of a milk crate. At the end of the challenge, however, only James Waterman remained standing,

gaining immunity. Then, for the second time, Jenn Wilkins was cast-off.

Sitting at tables on the LSR basketball court, the remaining survivors waited in the sweltering sun for a series of eight gruesome dishes to be brought forth for consumption. Elee’s team won affording Elee the luxury of immunity in the following vote where Jake was voted off of Survivor.

During the final hours of LSR Survivor 2009, all of the teams competed in a water relay. At the end of the night only Elee’s team was able to earn enough points to win Fribbles at Friendlys. The real question was which winning Survivor would be joining them.

After a unanimous vote against Clara Norstroem ( Rotu), only James, Elee, and Katie remained. The teams of the exiled survivors as well as the remaining survivors then cast their votes for the final two, eliminating Elee.

After a suspenseful tie, on account of the exiled survivors’ split vote, Team-O voted Katie Peduzzi, of team Sambura, the official winner of LSR Survivor 2009. See the celebration below!

special eventsgreen & white ‘rocks’ mknThe Underdog Takes the Prize

For the first time, the annual Green and White games were played as an all-camp all-day extravaganza planned by the legendary Jenn

Wilkins. In looking through old yearbooks Bunkie found that Green and White used to be a one-day event, so, to get back to our roots, we gave it a go!

White won in the end, but green definitely had a good run – white was behind for most of the day! After a morning game of rocks, green had double white’s score. During afternoon rotations which included a b-ball shoot-out, lacrosse, broom hockey, tennis doubles competitions, volleyball serve competitions, pool team relay, soccer and the amazing hill-run, green still had the lead, but white was not far behind. The score going into dinner was green: 1358 – white: 1337!

During the evening team building events both teams showed great cohesion and white definitely pulled it together. The team cheer and plaque events were great by both teams, but the white plaque was outstanding and put white at a slight lead.

The Seneca focus event was full of pie eating, sandwich eating and lots of water. It was close all the way but white came out victorious causing Mike Molloy to be the receiver of a pie in the face from Kevin Lilley. Delicious!

After spending most of the summer in sports instruction, it’s great to put the skills to the

test! The program cabana works very hard to keep the MKN schedule full of tournaments and intercamp games around the Berkshires.

This summer the MKN athletic teams did an excellent job and certainly added a lot of trophies to the collection in the field house. This is a good thing because a little-known fact is that Coach Jon stores all of the trophies in his bed during the off season for safe-keeping. We’re certain that the boys at Greylock, Lenox and Winadu are nervous to see

what MKN ‘10 will bring to the athletic fields!

Of course, part of the MKN way is that it doesn’t matter if you win or loose...which is why we’re also proud to boast something more important than our trophies -- the top-knotch MKN teamwork, sportsmanship, and team spirt.

Job very well done, Mah-Kee-Nac ‘09!

in the loopearly mkn morningsPolar Bear Club

Initially founded in 1767 by Sir John Polar Bear of Shropshire, England, the polar bear club was a exclusive high-brow society where people of all

ages would partake in aquatic rituals. While virtually unknown today, Sir John is a distant descendant of Mah-Kee-Nac’s own Paul Tanahill who continues these rituals each summer at camp. When asked why it is necessary to rise at the crack of dawn to swim on the shores of the Stockbridge Bowl Paul stated:

‘our bodies are our most glorious possessions, that health-wealth is our greatest asset . . . that weakness is truly a crime . . . that every man can be a vigorous vital specimen of masculinity: that every woman can be a splendidly strong, well poised specimen of femininity.’

When asked by MKN Today! to explain this further Paul stated that he believes that a dip in the lake during the summer can benefit one’s stamina, virility and immunity. With this belief shaping the core of polar bear club at Mah-Kee-Nac kids across camp would rise early once a week, don a swim suit, towel and a positive attitude and head down to rendezvous with Paul and his band of lifeguards at the waterfront. Before taking the plunge these brave souls would sing the words of the polar bear club song that have echoed throughout the ages…what is it? You’ll have to meet us at the waterfront next summer to find out! It’s a secret to which only club members are privy.

After this act of temperature-defying courage, the campers, counselors and lifeguards all head back up to the dining hall for some well-earned breakfast where the main question being asked across the tables is always “are you in?”

The Story behind MKN’s beastly triceps

At Mah-Kee-Nac everyone has tickets to the gun show. A recent study operated in the program cabana revealed the amount of staff muscle-

mass is triple all the campers weights combined! Such a study was only necessary after the EPA informed MKN that this insane concentration of ripped individuals has changed the gravitational pull in Lenox, causing mass flooding throughout the summer! How is this possible?!?!

Despite the rumors circulating camp that Kevin only hires Ironman contestants, the real reason MKN’s staff is incredibly buff is the result of boot camp! See the aftermath at the bottom of the page.

Boot camp kicks off at 6 AM almost every morning. Under the guidance of Coach Jon, the “willing” staff members feel the burn of a rigorous circuit. Jump roping, weight lifting, lunges and cage-fighting are among the many activities included.

When asked why he is so dedicated to boot camp, James Foley simply flashed his perfectly sculpted bicept. Fiona proved how much she loves boot camp by lifting the suburban with her big toe. Overall, these displays of ferocity seemed to be the common reaction to the mention of boot camp, proving the intensity of the staff’s dedication to staying strong!

in the loopthe back page:Danbee-MKN Brother-Sister LuncheonsPerry Dornbush (Seneca left)

The second Danbee-MKN Brother-Sister Luncheon of the summer took place on Saturday, July 11th here at MKN. These luncheons occur weekly and are held on Fridays when they are at Danbee

and on Saturdays when they take place here.

When held here, the Danbee sisters usually arrive shortly after Period 2 and meet up with their MKN Brothers on the steps of the Kruger Lodge. After we meet up with our sisters, we show them around our campuses and bunks. The Seneca brothers, such as myself, showed our sisters around the Seneca House and let them watch a little TV in the process. After a quick tour, the brothers and sisters make their way over to the dining hall for lunch. During lunch, the camp photographers usually walk around snapping shots of the MKN campers having a nice lunch with their Danbee sisters. After lunch, we head back to our campuses for a little bit and at around 1:15, it’s time to say our goodbyes as our sisters board the bus and head back to Danbee.

When the brothers first see their sisters come off the bus, the looks on their faces show great happiness and joy. It is great for the

brothers and sisters to spend time together because it is a good way for them to talk to each other about the events occurring in each other’s lives throughout the summer. To be able to spend time with my sister is an added bonus to the summer because I can share my camp experiences with her and she can do the same with me.

The goal of these Brother-Sister Luncheons is to help strengthen the social bond of the brother-sister relationship with the campers at both Mah-Kee-Nac and Danbee. By having these luncheons, brothers and sisters are able to communicate to each other about their daily lives at camp. It is especially important for the younger

brothers and sisters to be able to talk to their siblings and gain advice from older and more experienced campers. Hopefully, the Brother-Sister luncheons will continue on so that brothers and sisters alike can help in making each other’s summers the best ever.

Returning to MKNDaniel Barnett (Bunk 13)

Camp MKN is the place to be to have excitement every day. There are so many opportunities

here to try out that you haven’t done before. My name is Daniel Barnett this is my 3rd year here and it was worth it to come all this way because even though there’s program for four weeks they’re so many exciting events and trips here. The fun events are College Day if you are a junior, survivor for lower seniors and lastly Olympics for the whole entire camp that are put on eight teams who compete courageously for the gold.

I came back to do all these events, which I can finally do because I’m a Navajo. This year my first year doing survivor, I hope it’s going to be great and race to the top and survive and win! The trips that I get to go on, Six Flags and Cooperstown, are so much fun. I also came back because of the food that is sooooo delicious and drives you to heaven. I also came back because of my great camp friends who make me feel that I belong and I don’t have to try to fit in, they just take me for who I am, they don’t try to pretend because they are better than that. Camp Mah-Kee-Nac is full of smiling happy faces every day and everywhere. Sometimes they get sad but they always try to make the best of it and deal with it, because it’s camp and it’s your home for the summer and you came here to have fun not to be sad so they pull it together and have the time of their life. So it is very worth it to come all this way because this is my world of opportunities to get better at things and to try new things and I make the best of it everyday here at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac. I belong here and feel happy every day. This is my home.

On Friday, July 10th, ten Senecas were presented with a very special treat. Brett Lichtenberg,

Matt Fishman, Sam Martorella, Spencer Carmen, Noah Tanenbaum, Eli Steindorf, Rolando Sebelen, Ernesto Venegas, Ben Bushell, and myself stayed in the dining hall after breakfast to bake cookies for the Friday night service. First, we measured the flour and poured it into a large container. Next, we weighed the right amount of brown sugar, butter, and salt in a pie tin. Then, we added the eggs, vanilla, and chocolate chips during the mixing. After that, we poured the batter out of the bowl, scooped it onto a baking sheet, and put the tray in the oven. Once the cookies were finished, Chef Bob and the MKN Kitchen Staff brought out a tray of the warm cookies as well as a crate of chocolate milk and let us have a taste. After we had our filling of cookies and milk, we went around delivering cookies to members of the MKN Office Staff.

Later that night, the Senecas were presented with another special privilege. After evening activity, the Senecas returned to the dining hall for Miss Gwen at 9. Earlier that day, the Senecas were presented with an order sheet with three possible choices. There was the Molloy, a double-decker cheeseburger; the Kevin, a triple-decker grilled cheese sandwich; and the Coach, a grilled cheese sandwich with a hamburger patty in the middle.

After all of the deep-fried goodness was handed out, we smiled and grinned as we ate. When we were finished, we said, “Thank You!” to Miss Gwen and went back to the Seneca House for the night. What a day! I love being a Seneca.
