THE HUMAN TOUCHDespite the tremendous advancements in sorting technology, materials still wind up where they shouldn’t be. Our expert quality controllers manually separate anything that could damage the machines or that was missed or misplaced by the automated sections of the recycling system.

You can’t change the past, but you can change the future! Always remember to reduce, reuse and recycle. When possible, attempt to reduce consumption of materials and reuse items before depositing them into the recycle can. Remember, your neighbors, friends and families may have use for items you no longer need. Sharing is not only nice, it’s beneficial for our environment. Recycling takes just a small effort on your part but makes a huge difference to our world.

CARTONS Cartons fill up the typical lunch bag! Those juice boxes, milk cartons and soup containers you enjoy daily are recyclable. This type of packaging is easy to recognize and can be found in your home and on store shelves in both refrigerated and non- refrigerated forms.
SNAGS IN THE SYSTEMPlastic bags are the kryptonite of single stream recyclers. Their presence causes MRF machinery to not function properly. Plastic bags aren’t always processed at recycling facilities and often wind up at landfills, so just keep them away from our SuperMRF! Recyclables don’t even need to be put into a bag first. Simply throw the items straight into your container and take your plastic bags back to a grocery store or a public drop-off center! Better yet, reduce your use altogether and bring your own bags when out shopping!
SIZING IT UPNext, an Old Corrugated Cardboard screen (OCC) sorts cardboard by its size. This screen has three decks of properly spaced rubber Stars! Anything newspaper sized or smaller falls through the screen to the next belt. This includes small containers, metals and paper. Larger items continue on top and head to the QC station.
WE SEE YOUYou can tell a lot about a person just by looking at their eyes. TotalRecycle’s Optical Sorters do the same for recyclables! These “robot eyes” are highly advanced machines that have the ability to scan, identify and sort specific materials. And they do it thousands of times faster and more efficiently than a human could. Just one optical sorter does the job of up to twenty people! Now how do we design one for our bedrooms at home? FAST EDDY
You don’t want to get caught in a current but aluminum does! The Eddy Current is a magnetic field that only attracts aluminum products. All other items picked up are sorted by the QC and sent to its appropriate landing site. Materials that do not get caught in the current proceed to the Residue QC line before entering the compactor.
SCREEN ALL ABOUT ITNot everything is done on the Internet! So much paper comes through the MRF that there are three screens dedicated solely for this material. Following the 2nd presort, two screens are allotted for newspaper and the third for mixed paper. Paper gets the passing grade here while other items, such as plastic, metal and glass, fall through the screens and continue on to their proper destination.
SORT IT OUTThe Quality Control Station is the hall monitor of the MRF. This is the sorting process that guarantees all items end up in their right place at the right time! Whether it is employees manually sorting or machines doing the separating, we refer to these vital Quality Control Agents as the QC.
NUMBER CRUNCHER Did you know plastics are categorized by numbers? The optical sorting machines may not know math but they do have the ability to properly serarate plastics by their number! Once this process is completed, plastics receive QC at the manual sort station.
After arriving at TotalRecycle, this is
where the single-stream recyclables gather to prepare to be loaded.
TotalRecycle’s next door neighbor is Pioneer Crossing Landfill. This J.P. Mascaro & Sons disposal facility is permitted to take in up to 1,975 tons of waste each day. That’s enough to fill your entire school’s gymnasium! Pioneer accepts all non-recyclable material processed by TotalRecycle. Our landfills are impeccably cared for and are rigorously designed to protect the environment from any harmful contaminants; however nothing protects the environment more than following the three R’s. So today, and every day, remember to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE!
STARSAnd the Star of this operation is… the STARS. No one wants to be in the wrong place when the show begins. Well, neither do recyclables! Stars decide what items move up the screen and what items don’t make the cut. This advanced technology has a precise shape and structure that is key to the correct materials ending up where they belong.

METALSContainers may start to get lonely as they are the only items left on the stream at this point. When they pass through this section a magnet pulls out and removes those recyclables that are ferrous metals!
Mom isn’t going to get mad when glass shatters here! At this station, a “Glass Breaker” purposely breaks glass and
separates it into different sizes.
