Tech Panel Our recent poll of Reg readers on their perceptions of some of the most prominent brands in the

notebook PC space provided some interesting food for thought for those looking to make procurement

decisions in this area. While it is tempting to focus on specs and prices, it was clear from results that there is

much more to it than that

For the more discerning, but still value conscious customer, it is also interesting to see Toshiba being

considered as representing a good balance.

Laptop Shipments Top Desktops for First Time

In the 3rd quarter of 2008 notebooks topped desktop PC’s for the first time in market share history with 38.6M units as desktop PC’s fell a further 1.3%.

Second-place Dell saw a 6.3 percent decrease & Lenovo also saw its global shipments drop almost 5 percent.

There were a few bright spots in the midst of the economic gloom. Toshiba being one…heavily invested in notebooks and therefore more insulated from the long-declining desktop market, saw high rates of growth.

Quality Improvement

PCs are lasting longer without a part going wrong, accordingto new research from Gartner.• There has been a 25 percent decrease in annual failure rates for PC hardware over the

last two years, the research firm said in a report published last week.

• A hardware failure was considered by Gartner researchers to be any problem that meant a hardware component would have to be replaced, whether a broken latch or a motherboard meltdown.

• The improvement can be attributed to a higher level of quality assurance testing now, Gartner analyst said.

• Screen breakage used to be the leading problem in notebooks, according to the report. That has been replaced by motherboard and hard drive breakdowns — the same two main sources of failure for desktops.

•  In a targeted innovation designed to tackle hard drive availability improvements Toshiba announces today across its commercial class Tecra and Portege notebook families, affordable, solid state hard drives designed by Toshiba to be Tougher, Quieter and Faster than a traditional rotating hard drive.

Strengthening Supply Economics

Electronics manufacturer Toshiba has agreed to buy Fujitsu’s

hard-disk drive business, in a move aimed at expanding its

footprint in the enterprise storage market.

• In a statement released on Tuesday Feb 17th, 2009 Fujitsu did not reveal how much the

deal is worth but said the transaction should be completed 30 June this year.

• Under the agreement, Fujitsu will transfer all its hard-disk drive (HDD)-related

businesses and functions including HDD design, development, manufacturing and sales.

The deal will enable Toshiba to “reinforce” its position as a vendor of small form-factor

HDDs, commonly used in consumer electronics and mobile devices, the company said.

• The agreement will also pave the way for Toshiba to enter the HDD market for

enterprise servers and data-storage system applications, enabling the company to

expand its footprint in the solid-state drive (SSD) segment.

• The combination will almost double Toshiba’s market share in hard-disk drives to about

16 percent, rivaling Hitachi’s rank as the industry’s third-largest producer.

Toshiba's new laptops sharpen up Internet video

• The top‐end machines will use the company's SpursEngine graphics chip to improve video quality on Internet streams.

• Toshiba is putting its quad-core SpursEngine chip to use in several new laptops to improve the quality of Internet video images.

• The company's new Qosmio multimedia laptops, will use the graphics processing chip to clean up video from sites such as YouTube, the company said Tuesday.

• The function will work when playing video full screen -- not when it's played in a window on a Web site -- and only when using Internet Explorer.

• The SpursEngine was developed by Toshiba and is based on the same architecture as the Cell Broadband Engine microprocessor that powers the PlayStation 3 console. While the Cell contains a Power PC core and eight "Synergistic Processing Elements" cores, the SpursEngine contains only four of the SPE cores.

• The chip also contains a hardware encoder and decoder for MPEG2 and MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video and is designed to be used as a co-processor in a PC for handling of calculation-intensive work such a real-time high-definition graphics processing. In the new Qosmio machines it works alongside an Intel Core2 Duo processor.

• The Qosmio is Toshiba's flagship laptop and the new models come with features to match that position.

• The top-of-the-range G50 includes an 18.4-inch widescreen full high-def LCD screen, 2.66GHz Core2 Duo processor, a 640GB hard disk and dual digital TV tuners.

Intel: Spend smart to save more money

Spend more to save more. That's the message Intel is trying to deliver to organizations with its top five IT recession survival tips.

• The company put the list of tips together because while it's a natural instinct for most organizations to batten down the hatches and stay as still as possible as the economic hurricane passes over, the reality is that IT spending still needs to be done, said Elaine Mah, business marketing manager for Intel Canada. Additionally, there are good return on investment (ROI) reasons for investing in certain technologies -- but organizations have to spend smart.

• "There are still investments that need to be made in these tough times. It's about how to make smart technology investments that will pay dividends in the long run when we come out of this economic downturn we've gotten ourselves into," Mah said.

• The essence of the top five tips is to spend smart, do more and be more secure, she noted.

• The first tip is to refresh PCs that are more than three years old. While that does require an output of cash, it makes sense from an ROI perspective, Mah said. As PCs (and servers, for that matter) age, the maintenance costs start to increase, with those costs increasing by 50 per cent after the systems age past three years.

• At the same time, end-users will see significant productivity and secure enhancements by working on more modern PCs, Mah said.

• "The productivity you'll get out of a newer system will be quite significant when you're looking at a three-year-old PC versus a system you'd buy today," she said. The same can be said for servers, as three-year-old servers are likely built on single-core technology and can't offer the productivity gains that dual- and multi-core servers can offer.

• The second tip is to go mobile. Intel and other vendors have been talking to the benefits of mobile technology for some time, but in the economic downturn, it still makes sense.

• "If you're looking at making a smart investment ... we would suggest that when you do that refresh, buy a notebook PC. From a spend smart perspective, moving to mobile will save energy. You're reducing system power consumption," Mah said. Additionally, workers with mobile PCs will be more productive because they can connect anywhere.

• The third tip is to look to managed services and remote manageability features. Solution providers can turn on features in more recent equipment to take advantage of remote monitoring capabilities, which can not only help with security, but also in maintaining the systems, Mah said.

• "Once they're able to prove to their customers the type of value they're getting from the remote management, you can go back and look at the rest of the systems in the environment and you're back at the refresh," she said.

• Another critical element is ensuring good information and knowledge capture, which is tip number four. Better understanding the impact of knowledge management on a business' overall success, productivity and competitiveness is important, Mah said.

• "You need to make sure you build up the right infrastructure before the storm hits," she said.

• Finally, the last tip is to buy into green technology to reduce energy consumption and costs, Mah said. Most PCs and servers today are more energy-efficient than those of a few years ago.

• "To not do anything is always going to be the wrong strategy. Now is not the time to turtle," Mah said.
