If you asked me to describe the meat factory I could go off on a tangent about all the good times and bad times but to keep it short and simple it’s an abandoned factory that is located a few miles outside the town of Las Vegas. The Meat factory has become a meca for not only skate-boarders/bmx riders but for graffiti artists and everyone in between. I have heard that back in the 80’s it was a factory that processed fiber board and eventually shut it down because to many people where having accidents even heard stories of how people fell into the machinery and were processed into the boards. Despite that the name of the factory is derived from the founding fathers whom were skateboarders not from the horrid stuff

that happened there. I came across the factory through friends whom I’d known through skateboarding I became in-trigued by how erie and strange the whole place seemed to be. After a while it felt more like a place to be it accumulated a lot of destruction and graffiti and a few explosions but to me the lot which was a building on one side of the street and the factory followed by the water towers followed by more buildings was an expan-sion of my personal life and perspective. The shattered windows and computer screens as well as the marked up walls not only defined our youth but our rebellion and our fight. The factory became our outlet for self expression but as all things came to a cease when someone bought

the building they destroyed our ramps and buffed (covered) all our graffiti, Fixed the windows and brought in camper trail-ers. I never would have thought anyone could capitalize or fix what we destroyed up on that hill but they did. The other side of the meat which you can still access is utilized by the city by what I assume is a dump yet I’ve heard other things. the factory it lives on and continues to be utilized for skateboarding, street art and do it yourself activities just like it always has. So the only question I can ask is where will it go from here?

The new faze, era, the craze, the clash between art and flow. Don’t know to much all I know is paranoid impulses and intentions..It’s the life, the code and the rushed out feeling inside. Graf-

fiti is the language of the very few who are true to the streets, of true steez and style. The cultural back hair of the mighty streets. The heroin of the true graff heads the past and the future yet it is

another bridge another wall yet something different to portray against all odds. we all wait for the right time to scrawl against the flashing lights sounds and the lurkers. It is not about ego as

so much pride it’s for something more inside. ROLLASK8

Skateboarding is the deepest con-nection between my soul and my heart it’s been a way of expression for half of my life. So many things are taken in account in the case of skateboarding because to me and many others it’s the most cultur-ally influenced activity to date. That is what makes it so unique. Skateboarding has helped me be-come the person I am, yet it influ-ences everything else. Skating has opened my perspective to subcul-tures, music, art and even architec-ture. Plenty of knowledge comes from riding a piece of wood.I found alot of passion and dedica-tion once I found I was gravitated to skateboarding especially since you have to think differently from the mainstream. In a strong sense I feel Skateboarding in my eyes is an artform a way of self expres-

self expression it has no materi-alistic value you have no winners and no losers and at the end of the day all that matters was the simple fun. Skateboarding is flourishing yet it maintains its rawness as an illegal sport. there is a large fol-lowing of skateboarding by a lot of individuals who gravitate to its many benefits because it’s so free to use.Anyone who skateboards has some appeal or style that makes them different, no two skaters are the same.I like to go out and about while I skate sometimes and take pictures of the street culture or the stuff I’m exposed too. After a while I had become intrigued with my pictures. this eventually led to me filming stuff. I like to film things that visually represent things in my life whether it’s skateboard-ing or nature or real life events.

boarding has inspired me to persue contemporary art as well as street art. I don’t feel any permanence to anything just a mutual feeling with the skateboard I ride and the emotion I would like evoked from my art.Even if skateboarding never takes me to far. I will al-ways have heart to keep on riding. The friends I have made through skateboarding are some of the best friends I could ever have for I know their Idealogy is similiar to mine. I will always find happiness in skateboarding and the people that surround it,hence why we enjoy the simple things life has to offer us and focus less on the com-plicated matters!Keep on riding those useless wooden toys my friends!

The person I have recently become aware of who has also been a positive influence that I have not met person-ally however his influence has had a profound affect on the way I live and continue to see the world is Ian Mackaye. Ian Mackaye is a sucess-ful American singer, musician, label owner, and producer his roots go back to creating a positive counter cultural movement in punk rock called straight edge. Straight edge is a sub-genre of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs as well as promiscuous sex. My story starts to when I was younger when I started to dilute with the alterna-tive scene of skateboarding. I was always quite aware of who I was and for the most part found happiness in simply being an individual. It wasn’t until my peers tried to influence me to drink and take part in casual drug

activity is when I realized I needed to bypass early drug use for I had seen the negative effects it had on my family and community as a whole. I never wanted to become like the rest of my peers thats partly why I only hung out with a select group of friends.I found interest in other valuable things whether it was skate-boarding, music, or art at a young age. Inevitably drug use came to play heavily during my last couple years of highschool and early into college for it had become something to do socially on my leisure time as well as it being a void to my insecurities. It took me about four years to real-ize at a party that I was doing myself an injustice by poisoning myself and my personality.I have never felt that I had a charismatic personality for I saw that being all that I was, was not enough to define me.I stopped drinking that night 8 months ago.

giving up drugs I noticed alot about people and that was I was blinded to their envy and ignorance.I not only feel better about myself but overall my health has improved drastically. One of Ian Mackaye’s most notable influences on myself is how he has managed to express his frustration in a positive manner. I have been able to take on more by using my aggression from my anger to fuel my potential. I feel something in that music conveys alot about the way I live my alternative life as a skateboarder, artist, vegetarian etc rebelling against the mainstream way of thinking.that is why I feel alot of people are gravitated to the same idea. I know that this lifestyle is not for everyone and technically I understand why diversity is impor-tant since I’ve seen both sides to this issue. If we agreed we would both be wrong right?
