Chairmans Report

Hi one and all. As you can see your new committee has met and decided to resurrect the Torque Magazine in 2015. It may not be as fancy as the past but will have all the information about our outings, costs and payment deadlines you need. We have also put together a program of events for 2015 as well as some other ideas to make our meetings more interesting. The Register is only as strong as its members so get behind it and if you haven’t joined us in the past why not make 2015 the year to give it a go. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. We have a new and enthusiastic committee to guide us this year. I look forward to meeting you at an event sometime soon. Happy Jaguaring. Ray Howlett Chairman

GOLD COAST REGISTER CHRISTMAS PARTY 2014

How fitting to end another successful year on the Gold Coast at our Christmas Party, held on 6

December at the Mercure Gold Coast Resort. We met in lovely surroundings, to enjoy each

other’s company over drinks and nibbles, and were then ushered into an adjoining room to find a

wonderful Winter’s Wonderland, beautifully put together by one of my Elves, Gwen, and her able

assistant, Chris! There were Snowmen, Santas, Sleighs and Reindeers, and each table was

carefully crafted to suit its name, with snow and cones adorning the tables.

Everyone seemed to enjoy our dinner, a change from the usual Christmas feast, and the success

of the evening was proven by the amount of movement of people and volume of noise during the

evening. The brilliant band was conveniently situated in the other room, to avoid headaches, and

our new President, Tony Herald, was proud to give out a well-deserved award to Terry Cooper for

his commitment over the past year. Our new Chairman, Ray Howlett, made presentations to Terry

and Di Cooper for their amazing contribution in putting together very successful mid-week runs

over the year, ably assisted by Sandy Smith, and Derek McConnell was also presented with a gift

for his amazing efforts to “save” a couple of events at the last minute!

And what “amazing” raffle prizes! Enormous thanks to Ian, James and Tim from Sunshine Jaguar,

for their incredible generosity in providing two separate prizes of weekends driving in a brand new

Jaguar! The Mercure gave us a night’s accommodation with buffet breakfast for one lucky winner.

The hamper was spectacular – as usual. We even had a fabulous Gingerbread House, kindly

created and donated by Lyn Evers. A men’s prize, a ladies’ prize, the list goes on. Huge thanks

to Chris Miers for beautifully putting together the prizes!

Thank you to the members who came from Mt. Isa, Brisbane and Northern New South Wales, to

help us celebrate in style.

May I take this opportunity to wish every Register in Queensland (and beyond) good health,

happiness and every success for a great year ahead.

Debbie Duncan

David Willmott then explained exactly what did happen! With Bryan experiencing some vague disorientation symptoms at the morning tea stop-over, the members decided that he should not drive any further and an ambulance was arranged to get him to Logan Hospital for a check-over. Following 3 days of observation and numerous tests, Bryan was ultimately given the all-clear and diagnosed with a 3-hour episode of TGA (Transient Global Amnesia), which is non-recurring and leaves no known after-effects. Bryan expressed his sincere appreciation to all of the club members attending for their incredible response to the situation. In particular, he thanked Ray Howlett, Debbie Duncan (who got to drive his car!!), and David and Ruth Willmott, for their amazing support and insistence that he receive the appropriate attention. Morale of the story – make sure you are on a Jag run if you have a “turn”!

Congratulations!

Raffle: Three bottles of wine were raffled and won by John Hornabrook, Denise Hutchins and Ingrid Lindener. That Was the Year That Was – 2014 2014 proved to be a busy and successful year for the Gold Coast Register with great events organised, a temporary change of meeting venue for a few months while Sunshine Jaguar was being renovated and new car models from Jaguar. Financially the Register is in a healthy condition. Events started with the annual February Breakfast Run organised by Ron Gaudion and we enjoyed a country drive to the Delivino Restaurant at Mt. Tamborine for a tasty breakfast. Unfortunately the event was marred by a problem with the lift getting stuck at the restaurant which caused some members considerable distress until being released. This event was followed up in March by a run through country west of the Gold Coast organised by Derek McConnell to Flavors Restaurant at Boonah via Beaudesert. Also in March some members joined the E Type Register for a breakfast at the Outpost café in Canungra. The National Rally was held mid-April in Victoria this year and those members who made the trip down to Melbourne for this important event had a great time, especially if they went on the post-rally tour. Di and Terry Cooper took the lead in May with a Sunday trip up to Kirkfare Klassics in Aspley to view the marvellous collection of classic cars. During May we also had the Mother’s Day luncheon at the Palmer Colonial Golf Club with members enjoying a two course lunch in a pleasant environment also organised by Ron Gaudion. With June came the Jaguar June Jaunt over three days organised by Peter Finn and Col Grahame from Brisbane. For those Gold Coast members who attended we enjoyed a drive down through Northern NSW to Armidale. Highlights included wine and cheese tasting, viewing a large collection of steam engines and carriages isolated in the middle of a field and a vintage car collection in Armidale. Christmas in July this year was held at O’Reillys in Canungra and proved to be a great success. Everybody who attended enjoyed the luncheon set in ideal country surroundings. It was a great event and thanks go to Arthur Kontalis who organised the event. Members who went on the Chairman’s Weekend Away in August experienced something different this year. The event was held overnight at Woodlands of Marburg, with a dinner termed a night of Murder, Mystery and Mayhem. Guests were required to dress in the period of the sinking of the Titanic 1912 and, between dinner courses, act out parts given to us by the hosts, with nobody knowing who was the ‘’murderer’’ until the end of the play. It was well organised and club members thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks go to John and Lorraine Hornabrook for organising the event. The only thing dampening the night was some troublesome guests from another party well ‘under the weather’ causing real mayhem in the early hours of the morning, disturbing members to the point where the security guard was called. On the way home a number of us diverted to Neil and Jenny Summerson’s property at Peaks Crossing for a display of many different car models organised by the E Type Register. September was a busy month with the annual Spring Affair held at the Parkwood International Golf Club and organised by Derek McConnell. Derek led us on a roundabout way, heading west and stopping at the Pixie Tea House in Logan for a sumptuous morning tea and then eastward via Beaudesert to Parkwood where we had an excellent meal. Then the state display day was held at the end of the month and many members travelled up to the St. Josephs Sports Ground Tennyson for the day. Also Bryan White provided an interesting slide show of their recent travels through the European Alps at the monthly meeting. In October something different was planned by Kurt Lindener in visiting a Donkey Farm after morning tea at the Wyaralong Dam. Unfortunately the event had to be cancelled but all was not lost as Derek McConnell stepped in to organise a run to the Yum Yum Tree Restaurant at New Brighton. We had a combined run with the MG Car Club organised by John Hornabrook in November. It was a great day down through northern NSW to lunch at Mullumbimby but unfortunately the numbers were down a bit from our club. Our Christmas party organised by Debby Duncan, Gwen Howlett and Chris Miers was well organised (as you would expect) and a total success. It is described separately in the magazine. In between all the above activities we had the event organised once a month on a Wednesday by Terry and Di Cooper and Sandy Smith. Their effort every month was quite outstanding and during the year we lunched in places such as Summerland House Alstonville, Ballina RSL, Hotel Brunswick Mullumbimby, Canungra Hotel, the Irish Tavern at Calypso Bay Jacob Well, Tumbulgum Tavern, Waterloo Hotel Wynnum and Wellington Point. All the events were greatly appreciated by club members and thanks go to Terry, Di and Sandy for their efforts. The Register’s success for the year can be attributed to the 2014 committee and all other club members who have given up their time. Thanks to all. Unfortunately some of the events were not as well patronised as hoped for, and possibly with the reintroduction of this newsletter we will attract more members to events. Thanks go to Sunshine Jaguar for their continued use of their showroom at Southport for our monthly meetings and the supper snack following the meeting.
