Travel insurance
• Check: many policies have exclusions for "pre-existing conditions“ or “stability requirements”
• This means insurance will not cover any treatment for a condition if there was a change in medication (increase/decrease in dose, new Rx) or hospital visit for some period before travel – often SIX MONTHS!
• Consequence: if your child had an allergic reaction requiring an ER visit, or you changed his/her asthma medication in the 6 mosbefore the trip, your child would not be covered for that illness (allergy or asthma) on the trip
• Scary b/c may have already booked trip, may not want to go out of country (esp. to the U.S.) without travel insurance
• found "Travel Guardian Insurance Ltd." - pre-existing exclusion only for 10 days before trip. Not terribly expensive.
Great Wolf Lodge
• all hotel rooms have coffee maker, mini-fridge & microwave
• must bring own plates, utensils
• rooms available from 4pm to 11am, but allowed to use facilities from 1pm until following evening
• easy to bring dinner, breakfast, lunch plus snacks (we stopped at McDonalds on way home)
Beaches
• Visited Turks & Caicos location (May 2010)• Has a "food concierge" on site• Contact on arrival or daily to plan next day's meals. • Chef comes out to talk to you before each meal, personally
delivers meals• We e-mailed ahead, they ordered certain products
specifically for us (e.g. egg/nut free ice cream)• T&C location less than 30 mins from hospital (Jamaica - 2
resorts, further from hospital)• Have spoken with other allergy families (multiple allergies)
who have had good experiences there, one who goes back annually
Planning for Disney World
• Disney is well known for accommodating food allergies at all parks & hotels
• Protocol established to have chef come to table if anyone identifies as having food allergies
• apparently, you can show up at restaurants without reservation and will accommodate, but Disney recommends making restaurant reservations ahead of time (up to 6 mos) and informing them of allergies
• have binders with all ingredients at every restaurant/ food service location• have a "cake hotline" for ordering birthday/celebrations. Can
accommodate allergies (called me back to read ingredients to have me confirm was safe for my kids)
• online info available (e.g. allergyfreemouse.com, allergyeats.com, etc. ) • can bring own food into parks. • grocery delivery service or many grocery stores nearby (Whole Foods)
Disney
• Workbook with a sheet per park that you can update (listing created in 2008 so some rides have been added, some removed)
• Print updated sheets – one per park, easier to carry than a guidebook

When selecting a camp
Talk to camp management early:
Ask about:
policies
prevention strategies
food preparation practices
training of staff
Emergency action plan
Anaphylaxis.ca has written form
How far from camp is nearest hospital
How much time for EMS to arrive?
Does EMS carry epinephrine? Volunteer service?
Does local ER staff pediatricians? 24/7?
Review camp with your child’s allergist
Once Camp Selected
Talk with Camp Director/Medical Director Provide camp with medical report and allergy action plan
Clarify type of exposure that would trigger reaction (smell, touch, ingestion?)
Make sure camp knows if there is also a venom allergy and/or difficult to control asthma?
Review meal plans with food service manager Cross-contamination risks: Buffet lines, Camp Candy stores,
snacks from home or in cabins
Allergen free spaces to eat?
Can you visit chef/meal area prior to camp?
Assure all personnel know your child is allergic and know where medication is located and protocol to follow
Getting ready for camp
Make appointment with allergist to review child’s allergies prior to camp.
Check that auto-injectors are not expired. Bring two?
Review allergy action plan with your child. Do’s and Don’ts ie: do not share food with other campers, do
seek help if reaction occurs or suspected
Make sure your child knows how to use the auto-injector, and has a pouch or carrying case for the device
If traveling by train or bus to camp, make sure transportation personnel know about your child’s food allergies
Last, but not least
