81ST ANNUAL Winter Clinic programme

Toronto Academy of Dentistry President 2018

The Toronto Academy of Dentistry… Over 100 Years of Tradition.

Since 1890, the Toronto Academy of Dentistry has been a not for profit organization serving the member dentists of the four Toronto component societies of the ODA – Toronto Central Dental Society, Toronto East Dental Society, North Toronto Dental Society and West Toronto Dental Society. All members of these societies are automatically members of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry.

Recognized as a leading, responsible, accountable and benevolent link between dentists and our community, the Toronto Academy of Dentistry has been dedicated to enhancing the professional lives of its members through guidance, education and service.

Considered as one of the largest one-day dental events, Winter Clinic provides an un-paralleled learning experience with exceptional speakers and topics. A full day of multiple lectures for the entire dental team, camaraderie and fellowship.

In addition to our annual Winter Clinic, the Toronto Academy of Dentistry also provides several charitable fund raising and educational events throughout the year. Annual featured events include: Ski for Kids, All Societies Night, our annual Golf Tournament and Curling Bonspiel. All great days of networking and team play.

With your support and participation in our events, you help us to raise over $50,000 every year in support of the Sick Kids Department of Dentistry, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation and AboutFace.

As this year’s President of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry, I look forward to meeting many of you at these events. Feel free to visit our website www.tordent.com for our complete calendar of events.

Greetings from your four Toronto Dental Society Presidents

On behalf of Toronto’s four component societies of the Ontario Dental Association: Toronto Central, North Toronto, Toronto East and West Toronto Dental Socieites, we are pleased to welcome you to this year’s Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s 81st Winter Clinic.

Once again we are returning to Empress Walk Cineplex which has proven to be an amazing venue and environment to learn about advancements in dental technology, materials, and philosophies of practice from our colleagues and industry professionals.

This single day conference will be a premier occasion of Continuing Dental Education and a showcase of cutting edge Dentistry. Take full advantage of this one-day comprehensive exposition for dentists, hygienists and the whole dental team.

We welcome and encourage all ODA members to become involved in their component society. Each society hosts local meetings, continuing education evenings, CPR training, social events and much, much more!

This is a great way to get to know your colleagues and make new connections, as well as give back to the community by participating in Toronto Academy of Dentistry events such as Ski, Curling and Golf days. Funds raised from these events are donated to Sick Kids, AboutFace and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Over the years, the total contributions on behalf of the Dentists of Toronto have been over $650,000, which as a profession we should be very proud of.

We hope that you will join us at the Winter Clinic and look forward to meeting you in person.

81ST ANNUAL Winter Clinic programme

Greetings from the Ontario Dental Association

Dr. David Stevenson, President

Welcome to the 81st Winter Clinic. The Ontario Dental Association knows how important it is for dentists to stay up to date on

educational requirements and industry trends because it means more than just making us skilled practitioners – it also helps us serve our patients and communities that much better.

It’s in the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s core values to advance the art and science of dentistry, promote the highest ideals of dental practice and to cultivate harmony and fellowship among members of the dental community.

With that in mind, on behalf of the ODA, I sincerely hope all the dentists and their teams attending this year’s Winter Clinic have a professionally and personally inspiring day.

Welcome from the Association of Dental Technologists

Franklin Parada, RDT, DD, President, ADTO

As professional relationships go, there has been a symbiosis between dentists and Registered Dental Technologists. A dentist wants the best for their patient, and the experience and expertise of an RDT is key to ensuring this.

With all the technological advancements; Is this relationship still important? If the patient’s satisfaction is more important than profit margins, then the answer cannot

be anything but a resounding Yes.For all the advancements we are enjoying today, it should be remembered that every patient

is different. The mouth is not built on a template, and it takes real expertise to ensure that fit, function and comfort levels for individual patients are not sacrificed.

Working with an RDT allows dentists to tap into their knowledge and experience, and gives them the assurance that the design and fabrication of appliances meets the highest standards. Every device passes through quality control tests, and only then does it receive the RDT stamp.

It represents that we not only stand by the quality, but we also share the liability. Without the RDT stamp, the dentist is 100 percent liable.

It is my pleasure as President of the Association of Dental Technologists of Ontario (ADTO) to continue to be involved and support the Toronto Academy of Dentistry and to welcome you to this year’s 81st Winter Clinic.

Greetings from…

Alvin Leung – Demon Chef Judge on Masterchef Canada

Speakers & SeminarsFriday, November 9th | Morning session

Alvin Leung – Demon Chef TIME | 8:15 am to 8:45 am

THEATRE | 4 SESSION CHAIR | Dr. Raffy Chouljian

Alvin Leung – Demon Chef With his trademark colour-streaked hair, cross earrings and sunglasses, chef Alvin Leung has blazed a trail of his own in the culinary arts. Leung’s culinary innovations and larger than life personality has established him as a global star on the international food scene. The self-proclaimed ‘Demon Chef’ – the Chinese characters for which are tattooed on his arm – has no formal kitchen training. Yet, he is one of the rare self-taught chefs to have a 3 Michelin star establishment. As chef/owner of Hong Kong’s Bo Innovation, his unique ‘X-treme Chinese’ cuisine is lauded for modernizing centuries-old ingredients and traditional recipes with modern techniques and flavours, delivering novel dishes in tune with contemporary palates.Born in London, England, Leung spent most of his formative years in Toronto, Canada. Growing up in the suburb of Scarborough, he remains a dedicated ice hockey fan.In 2003, he began cooking professionally at a private kitchen restaurant that eventually became Bo Innovation. In 2009, it became one of Hong Kong’s few independent restaurants (not affiliated with a hotel) to be awarded 2 Michelin stars. In 2013, it was elevated to 3 Michelin stars status and has maintained that status to this day.Leung also operates a modern Korean eatery Bib N Hops, casual Spanish bodega Plato 86, and contemporary Chinese eatery Forbidden Duck. Leung has also introduced his daring cuisine to Mainland China opening Bo Shanghai and Daimon Bistro. He also operates R&D in Toronto, Canada.Despite his ‘rock and roll’ image, Leung is professionally trained as an engineer, a discipline he exercised for many years. This methodical, almost scientific, approach manifests in every dish he presents.Leung’s outlandish personality and flair has made him a sought-after guest at food events and culinary conferences across the world. He has become a familiar face on TV as a judge on Masterchef Canada and, in Asia, the host of The Maverick Chef and Wok Stars. He also starred in the Korean food and travel programmes, Seoul Extreme and Seoul Refined.

Bo InnovationA global gastronomic destination and one of Hong Kong’s standout culinary experiences, Bo is known for its daring and groundbreaking dishes exploring Chinese ingredients and flavours. For the new space, the restaurant name is formally changing to Bo Innovation: The Hong Kong Story. The moniker reinforces the inspiration, journey and origin tale of the food.

Dental and Medical Health Care Provision in the Frail Elderly

Speakers & SeminarsFriday, November 9th | Morning session

Dr. Michael Gordon

TIME | 9:15 am to 12:00 pm THEATRE | 3 SESSION CHAIR | Dr. Peter Markle CATEGORY | 2

Elderly are a heterogeneous group with diverse dental, medical and psychosocial needs. Research from across the globe repeatedly demonstrates that oral health status and access to dental care of the geriatric cohort lag far behind other segments of the population. This is both a tragic reality and an opportunity to do better. With advanced aging, health care needs – including dental care needs – increase while the ability to maintain independence in decision making, mobility and self-care decreases.

This presentation will examine the spectrum of aging across the frailty scale and from the perspectives of a dentist, a medical doctor, and an ethicist. We will start with relatively healthy older adults who are independent and cognitively intact. From there, the focus will shift to the various stages of aging with and without significant cognitive or functional impairment and medical comorbidities. The last part of the presentation will address the very complex and emotionally charged management of institutionalized elderly with or without elements of palliative care. In this latter stage of life, the aim is to allow people to complete their life cycle with dignity and respect. Dental care in the functionally dependent and institutionalized elderly is often complicated by challenges of access to care, consent, and life-span. This presentation will aim to give dentists and allied health professionals the tools to manage oral care needs of the elderly cohort within a broader medical context and will highlight the key role of teamwork approach and ethics.

Why the Dental Service Organization is a good fit for some but not for allThe corporate dental phenomenon has captured the interest of the profession coast to coast. What’s really going on? I worked for Canada’s first corporate entity in the late 1980’s and have had a fascinating experience following that company, and every other company since then. We have established a unique and empirical viewpoint of the past 30 years. ROI Corporation is equipped with an unmatched and unparalleled wealth of qualitative and quantitative information. No one in the industry has the information at their fingertips that we possess. We bring clarity and simplicity to a myriad of rumor and speculation. • Why solo dentistry remains the preferred business model of the majority of Canadian dentists• Group practice – a look back to its formation in the 1970’s to today – why has it not attracted more dentists?• Benefits of selling to a DSO• Competitive Landscape – from the DSO and the new solo dentists setting up in your area

Pain Management and Analgesics Use in the Dental Office: An Overview

TIME | 1:30 pm to 4:15 pm THEATRE | 3 SESSION CHAIR | Dr. Deborah Lin CATEGORY | 1 (CORE)

One of the most common sequela associated with dentistry and dental treatment is acute post-operative pain. Almost every procedure associated with dental treatment has the potential to cause some degree of post-operative pain requiring multi-faceted management. Today’s clinician has a large armamentarium of pharmacological agents to draw from to control acute post-operative pain. Depending on the anticipated severity of postoperative pain, these agents may include acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and opioids. Attendees will be introduced to evidence-based information related to the basic mechanisms of pain, the pharmacology of analgesics and the rationale for the selection of an analgesic for the treatment of acute odontogenic pain. Newer, common adverse drug reactions and drug interactions associated with these agents will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives• Discuss the physiology of pain• Review and discuss the pharmacology of the most common analgesics used in

dentistry to treat acute and chronic pain• Recognize potential drug interactions and adverse drug events associated with the

use of analgesics commonly prescribed by dental practitioners and understand the importance of organ function/ disease status in altering the absorption, distribution, metabolism and therapeutic action of dentally used analgesics.

Dr Aviv Ouanounou DDS, MSc

Dr. Aviv Ouanounou is an assistant professor of pharmacology at the faculty of dentistry, University of Toronto. He teaches pharmacology to undergraduate and graduate students and is a clinical instructor and Treatment Plan Coordinator. Dr. Ouanounou won numerous teaching awards including “Best Teacher of the Year Award” in 2013 and 2015, and is the recipient of the 2014-2015 prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for excellence in teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Ouanounou is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a member of the American Academy of Pain Management and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has published and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and maintains a general private practice in Toronto.

Speakers & SeminarsFriday, November 9th | Afternoon session

TIME | 1:30 pm to 4:15 pm THEATRE | 6 SESSION CHAIR | Dr. Xxxx Xx CATEGORY | 1 (CORE)

HPV related oral cancers are on the rise, and while cancer therapy saves lives it results in myriad oral and dental sequelae. How do we treat them? What are they? When is it safe and appropriate to provide dental care to the head and neck cancer patient? This lecture will provide dental clinician with the armamentarium to treat and manage the dental patient undergoing head and neck radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It will focus on pre-treatment assessment and evaluation of the oral cancer patient as well as what is necessary when the oncology team asks for a ‘dental clearance’ prior to oncologic therapy. Furthermore, this lecture will introduce the dentist to the pathophysiology and management of varied oral sequelae including osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORN), mucositis, hyposalivation and radiation fibrosis along with the oral and dental manifestations associated with head and neck radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It will also discuss the ideal time to treat patients while undergoing chemotherapy as well as the appropriate and important questions to ask the patient’s oncologist and help providers become a vital member of the patient’s oncology team.

81ST ANNUAL Winter Clinic programme

DEAR DENTISTS OF TORONTO,

The Toronto Academy of Dentistry has developed an exciting program in partnership with The Mikey Network and Heaven Can Wait Emergency First Aid Training (HCW). This initiative has raised the stature of dentists in Toronto and

given recognition to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry and its component Societies.

This program offers Toronto Academy of Dentistry members a needed service, training and savings for their practice. They are able to purchase a high quality Philips OnSite AED and accessories from HCW at considerable savings. A portion of each sale is donated to The Mikey Network and the funds raised are used to place AEDs in public places, along with a plaque acknowledging the contributions from the dentists of Toronto.

Decisions as to where these AEDs are to be placed come from the joint efforts of The Mikey Network, Toronto Academy of Dentistry and the four Toronto component Societies.

To date, 6 AEDs have been donated through this initiative across the GTA since 2012.

The possibilities are endless with your support.

Heaven Can Wait is recognized as the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s preferred provider of AEDs and CPR/AED training. Heaven Can Wait’s certifications are recognized and approved by the Federal Government of Canada, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Heaven Can Wait offers a superior level of training within your office or in groups and HCW will service and maintain your AED as well as be a valuable resource for Emergency Support in your office.

We hope that you will be excited and supportive of this program.

For more details or to engage Heaven Can Wait please contact: David Goodman (416) 331-8855 [email protected]. www.heavencanwait.biz

HONOURARY LIFE MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY*Deceased

TORONTO ACADEMY OF DENTISTRY HONOURARY LIFE MEMBER

The Honourary Life Member Award represents the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s highest distinction. It is awarded to a member of the dental profession, typically from within the geographic borders of Toronto (conforming to the 4 Toronto

Component Societies) or alternatively, a dentist that may have taught at the University of Toronto.

This award is in recognition of years of service to the profession through education, care of patients, service to the community at large, along with charitable deeds. The Honorary Life Member Award recognizes the highest values of service, education, professionalism and care. Many Honourary Life Member recipients over their careers have contributed to the profession through their research and teaching. The Honourary Life Member Award is bestowed on those members of the profession whose efforts transcend any one element, but instead encompass a professional career in Toronto that positively impacted the profession and whose efforts are viewed as exceptional.
