THE 10
TRENDS THAT
MATTER THISSPRING
SUMMER2011
Be Bright! Be Beautiful! Be Brilliant! Just some of the ‘Bs’ that can be used to describe this
season. It reads like an episode of Sesame Street, “children, this season, the letter we are
looking at is B”. Were this also a grading for the quality of the offerings on show, I think this
would be an accurate mark for the collections to receive.
Bikers, beehives, blooms and brides blast forth in themed abundance. Nothing that makes the
heart race but equally nothing so unwearable that it goes ‘straight to DVD’. With mutterings from
the fashion camps of ‘minimalistic and commercial clothes’ [both of which we have heard so many
times before] it is best to ignore the monetary implications and instead look at the motivation behind
the designs. Bright optimistic clothing pops out of every show with unfashion-like predictability. Yellow,
fashion’s least-favoured colour, also marks a common theme between the international centres. The
explanation for the multitude of bridal gowns has not been speculated upon but there is a wealth of
thrown into the mix and appear with trend-like regularity. Reading between the lines, the motivation is
‘pleasure with a healthy hint of escapism’. Yes, there is innovation but it is safe and staid and has that
down-to-earth vibe that is perfect for our tumultuous times.
1/ BRIGHTS
What you need to know: toxic colours have maximum impact.
The currency this season is colour so spend it wisely. Pops of overwhelmingly bright clothing are this season’s
exuberant message, so electric in their vibrancy that they defy nature. Bolts of colour are worn in blocks to exact
the most potent message or worn in intense contrast. Sometimes too we see
bold hues worn with neutrals for a more subtle pairing.
Look for:
electricity.
2/ BLUE & YELLOW
What you need to know: the unlikely pairing of yellow and blue is very on trend.
Lemons, highlighter yellow, electric mustard and bright blonde were common on the catwalks of NYC, London, Milan
and Paris. However, odd as this might be, what is interesting and noteworthy was their exclusivity with blue. This trend is
bound together by the surprise companionship of yellow and blue,
bringing together garments that otherwise share nothing.
Look for:
and canary swirls.
3/ BOLD BIKERS
What you need to know: angelic women in tight, padded leathers are the new Hell’s Angels.
The evolution from aeroplanes to motorbikes helps us ease from Autumn/Winter to
Spring/ Summer, as our love of leather has morphed from sky-high inspired garments to the protective gear of the road.
Designers have taken direct references from bikers and added sex appeal by cropping and cutting these garments so that
they reshape the wearer, thus eliminating all the safety features.
Look for: exaggerated padding on elbows and knees, short jackets with shoulders softened
by moulded leather and leather leggings.
4/ BIG BLOOMS
What you need to know:
Florals always appear at this time of year and now we see them in larger-than-life
ers, some so big
and surrealist styles, in repetitive regularity and singular splendour.
They are not, as one might expect, particularly feminine or pretty
but instead more dramatic and striking. Glorious in their
abundance, they chime the bells of summer.
Look for:on liquid fabrics that give movement. Rarely
is the pattern behind the pattern
relevant as most designs are
rendered so tightly. If the
small..
5/ BOUNTIFUL BRIDE
What you need to know: if you can’t be the
bride, you can dress as one.
For years it has been common to complete a show with a wedding dress –
the last garment that sums up the collection and leaves the crowd on a high. This
season, however, we see dresses that wouldn’t look out of place at a reception. Some
that they dominate
the entire show. Critics might describe this trend as a ‘whiteout’ or as a ‘lace revival’,
but if you look closely, there is more than just the ubiquitous colour and fabric being
used here – there are subtle hints of matrimonial detail and drama. Wedding dresses for
daywear are a wonderful way to add romance to your mood. They are minimal, casual and
and holiday-esque.
Look for: lovely lace, sleek elongating lines, satins, silks, shoulder details, whites
or gentle pinks.
6/ BACK TO THE SEVENTIES
What you need to know: 70’s chic is back.
Often called ‘fashion’s gold’, the clothing of the seventies brings a smile and an income to those
who mimic it. Wide-leg trousers, kaftans, head scarves, platfor
this revival. Whilst still innovative, these modernised shapes give a down-to-earth wearability to
the personal expression of the 70s. Very few of these clothes could be located in the back of your
mother’s wardrobe, as while there are nods to the original era, these garments have been reinvented
Look for: beehive hair dos, platform shoes, turbans, tie-dye and halter neck styles.
7/ EXQUISITE TOMBOY
What you need to know: exaggerated menswear worn with casual, feminine charm.
While it is common practice among fashion designers to re-jig classic men’s clothing, this season we see
a more literal translation. The masculine elements and details are enlarged to make them features not
functions. You can look at this two ways; women wearing men’s clothing – literally. Or women wearing clothing
with the masculine elements exaggerated.
Look for: men’s clothes; oversized and baggy, pork-pie hats, messenger bags, ties and/or massive collars,
oversized belt loops, cuffs as details.
8/ BLISSFUL
What you need to know: clean and serene, this is the antidote to bright garish colours.
This coffee-coloured, feminine and subtle trend is cool and understated. It is minimal and reduced with the controlled
colour combinations of monotone and duotones. Paired away to reveal the essence of the shape of garments. It is
not, however, simple in its construction but rather cleverly conceived to look effortless whilst maintaining a quiet and
unassuming air. Expensive and form following fabrics give this trend a sophistication free from embellishment.
Look for: blanched colours ranging from blanc to caramel, minimal detailing, perfectly coordinated pieces that are
fuss-free.
9/ ECOWhat you need to know: inspiration taken from nature will score you brownie points with the fashion set.
By taking colours and embellishments directly from mother nature and rendering it on clothing, we get a look that is young
tiny insects, mud splatters and webbing are just some of the
details we see. Eco styling is usually hidden within the provenance of a garment, now we are seeing it ‘written’ on clothing.
Look for: references that are directly taken from the natural world, evolved into clothes though easy metamorphosis.
10/ UNFINISHED
What you need to know: designers have stopped completing garments.
Hard to detect if you are anywhere other than the front row, but there is a plethora of unpicked,
unironed, unseamed, unlined and undone clothing. As Karl Lagerfeld pointed out “it is incredibly
garments that look as if construction halted and they were hurled down the catwalk
several days ahead of time. Often an extension of the lace explosion, a way
perhaps of losing the neat and clean looks of garments and offering a fresh
deconstruction.
Look for: unpicked seams, fraying, tearing, ties where zips should
be, loose hems.
THIS SEASON YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT...
A long white lace dress
A padded leather cropped jacket
