People Have a Pent-Up Need for Experiences. Prepare for the Surge! The desire to travel and gather is strong. We’re all eager, yet anxious, to once again experience live sports, the arts, and even the thrill of a roller coaster ride. And while the goal line keeps moving, the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines have created great optimism around returning to all we love in 2021. Even amid distribution challenges and concerns over case counts, the High Traffic segment will see value in committing to new protocols and policies to help ensure people can safely and confidently return to the group experiences they’ve desperately missed.

Taking Back the Skies—and Customer ConfidenceAir travel has been hit hard. Yet the bold American spirit and the desire for mobility and experience, whether it’s to visit family or take a much-needed getaway, is leading to a slight uptick in domestic air travel. Globally, restrictions are more prevalent. But the U.S. is open, and people are starting to take back the skies, albeit slowly and cautiously. Airlines have worked hard to establish and communicate cleaning protocols and have added flexibility to booking practices.1

Be Ready. Look for Ways to Amp Up Hygiene While Driving Down Costs. Businesses that have prepared for the onslaught of pent-up demand by creating and investing in cleaning plans and hygiene protocols will be best positioned to accommodate the inevitable flood of activity, and meet the heightened hygiene expectations of visitors and travelers. Of course, with traffic currently down, so is revenue. Those budget constraints are guiding facilities toward products that can help reduce overall costs by controlling how much product gets used and wasted.

High Traffic Venues and Live Events are Held to High Standards With 94% of people saying they miss live events, facilities are looking hard for ways to reopen and bring people back together. But even before COVID-19, people felt uncomfortable using high-traffic venue restrooms, with 59% being somewhat or very uncomfortable using a restroom in a stadium or event venue. The same study shows 50% feel similar unease at theme parks, and 43% at airports. By contrast, 28% feel somewhat or very uncomfortable using a public restroom at a workplace or school. As for what consumers most wish they knew before entering a public restroom, 70% want to know whenit was cleaned last, and if it has ample toilet paper, soap and towels. Pre-pandemic, no soap was an annoyance. Now, it’s a risk factor. Understanding and mitigating key areas of risk is top of mind.3

Maximizing Custodial and Operational Efficiency Will be Vital to Success Due to new cleaning requirements and the necessity to ease patron anxiety, facilities are expected to do more now to step up efforts around enhanced hygiene. Offering clean, functioning public facilities will be table stakes, since studies show as visitors’ perceptions of a poor experience has shifted from a restroom being merely dirty to it being dangerous. But how can you and your staff be everywhere you need to be all at once? And now, when it matters most, how can you ensure patrons get the products they need when they need them?

Yet Another Cancellation, and Another Shut DownBeginning March 2020, conventions, conferences and major events like the 2020 Tokyo Olympics began to fall like dominoes. Broadway went dark. Disney locked the gates to the castle. And the list of cancellations, delays and events pivoting to virtual now extends well into 2021. As of August 2020, Disney had reported losses of nearly $5 billion due to closures. But now things are happening. Venues are opening to limited capacity, and people are finding ways to gather safely.2

Calm Returning Patrons. Showcase Your Commitment to Safety and Hygiene. As reopening begins, businesses and facilities that mitigate anxiety and uncertainty early by acting on and communicating their commitment to hygiene and safety will thrive. Setting expectations, showcasing efforts and being transparent about hygiene practices and protocols will be key. Programs like ISSA’s GBAC STAR™ Facility Accreditation can go a long way to instill confidence. And integrating tech tools like VR, permanent mobile ticketing/contactless entry, plus mobile food & beverage ordering and pick-up spots will also play a vital role in reassuring patrons.
