The Milan Stock Exchange was once again the venue for the TopLegal Industry Awards now in their second year. Over 450 people were present

at the event held in May, including representatives of Italy’s leading law firms and the stellar names from industry and finance. The TopLegal Industry Awards represent a unique competition in Italy with legal professionals judged not simply on their technical legal acumen but also on their ability to provide integrated and multidisciplinary services along business sector lines. Ever since the credit crisis, Italian law firms and lawyers have sought to go beyond the traditional practice-led approach to align themselves more strategically with the interests of their corporate clients. The Awards provide an occasion to gauge the progress made on sector-focussed legal services. To assist with adjudicating the winners, TopLegal created a special panel of 50 experts, including senior company counsel and top management drawn from across the spectrum of business and finance (see page 4). Among the experts was Ilaria Romagnoli, Head of Italy Wealth Management at Rothschild, for whom the TopLegal Industry Awards provide “a key sounding board for market innova-tion and trends”. For Giorgio Martellino, general counsel of aerospace company Avio, the TopLegal Industry Awards are “less a simple awards ceremony than a well-thought-out exchange between general counsel and the legal market”.

The HighlightsChiomenti and Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli emerged as the biggest winners on the night with three accolades each. The team from Chiomenti won in the Banking, Real Estate and Private Wealth categories while Gianni Origoni received the team recognition for Renewable Energy and Private Equity, along with an individual award for Infrastructure and Transport. Among the double winners, Bird & Bird (Insurance, Food and Drink), BonelliErede (Infrastructure, Bio-medical) Dla Piper (Insurance, TMT) and Legance (Funds, Real Estate). Across the board, Italy’s independent firms did well in matching their international competitors. That said, the largest Italian independents are far from enjoying a monopoly of accolades as one might expect. Other significant players, including smaller and less well-known boutiques with niche expertise provided stiff competition. Among these were Belluzzo (Wealth Management), Carnelutti (Media), CBA (Small-and Medium-Sized Enterprises), Cugia Cuomo (Technology), Lipani Catricalà (Public Administration), Molinari (Restructuring), Russo de Rosa (Funds) and Vaiano Izzo (Life sciences). Although UK and US law firms were the first to organize their services along sector lines, few of these players now position themselves in the Italian market with a full-service offering. Some have developed their traditional Italian practices in a new direction: among these, Bird & Bird (Insurance) and Withers (Luxury). For the most part, the big international names have concentrated on consolidating their existing strengths. Cleary Gottlieb remains a major player for energy while DLA Piper leads for TMT. Others have replicated their international successes in Italy. For instance, Latham & Watkins’ forte in Finance for Restructuring and Simmons & Simmons for Life Sciences.

BankingLAW FIRM OF THE YEAR: CHIOMENTIThe heavyweight team was at the heart of the Italian government’s successful multi-billion euro plan to rescue the country’s failing banks. The firm was mandated by the Bank of Italy for the sell-off of Nuova Banca delle Marche, Nuova Banca dell’Etruria e del Lazio, Nuova Cassa di Risparmio di Chieti and Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara. The firm also advised the European Central Bank on regulatory issues relating to Italy’s banking sector.

LAWYER OF THE YEAR: CARLO PEDERSOLI (PEDERSOLI)The firm’s name partner was acknowledged for his role in advising banks on the development of the Italian financial markets. He assisted long-standing client Intesa Sanpaolo on the sale of its Setefi and Intesa Sanpaolo Card payment units to a group that included Bain Capital and Advent in a deal valued at €1.04 billion.
