This presentation would discuss somecomparison and contrast between the 2main reference models which uses theconcept of protocol layering
Open System Interconnection Model (OSI)
Transport Control Protocol /InternetProtocol (TCP/IP)

The (commonlyknown as ) is the setof communications protocols used forthe Internet and other similar networks
It is named from two of the most importantprotocols in it:
the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP), which were the first two
networking protocols defined in this standard.

OSI TCP/IP
Data Link (Layer 2) Subnet
Physical (Layer 1)
1. Data Link/Physical vs Subnet
The Data Link Layer transforms a stream of raw bits(0s and 1s) from the physical into a data frame
The typical role of the physical layer is to transform
bits in a computer system into electromagnetic (orequivalent) signals for a particular transmission medium(wire, fiber, ether, etc.)

These 2 layers of the OSI corresponddirectly to the subnet layer of the TCP/IPmodel.
Majority of the time, TCP/IP model does
nothing, it will vary from host to host andnetwork to network Since these two layers deal with functions
that are so inherently specific to eachindividual networking technology, the
layering principle of grouping themtogether related functions is largelyirrelevant.

OSI: connectionless and connection-oriented services; TCP/IP: connectionless.

It takes the information into individualpackets
Provide a signaling service for the remote
node Transport protocols mark packets with
sequencing information
To acknowledge the receipt of a packet
Provide multiple application processes toaccess the network by using individual localaddresses to determine the destinationprocess for each data stream

The features of OSI and TCP defined atTCP/IP Transport Layer correspond to manyof the requirements of the OSI TransportLayer--the session layer of OSI
The TCP/IP and OSI architecture modelsboth employ all connection andconnectionless models at transport layer.
However, the internet architecture refers tothe two models in TCP/IP as simplyconnections and datagrams.

Presentation (Layer 6) Application
Session (Layer 5)
Session Layer: In TCP/IP, itscharacteristics are provided by theTCP protocol (Transport Layer)
Presentation Layer: In TCP/IP, thisfunction is provided by theApplication Layer.

Implementation of the OSI model placesemphasis on providing a reliable datatransfer service, while the TCP/IP modeltreats reliability as an end-to-end problem
Each layer of the OSI model detects and
handles errors, all data transmitted includeschecksums. The transport layer of the OSImodel checks source-to-destinationreliability
In the TCP/IP model, reliability control is
concentrated at the transport layer. Thetransport layer handles all error detectionand recovery.
