v Fatty acid synthesis starts with thecarboxylation of acetyl CoA to malonylCoA by acetyl CoA carboxylase, with theconsumption of ATP.
v In a subsequent reaction, CoA is exchangedfor acyl carrier protein (ACP). ACPcontains a serine residue to which apantetheine residue is linked via aphosphate group. Since the pantetheineresidue is also a functional constituent ofCoA, ACP can be regarded as a CoA, whichis covalently bound to a protein.
