A great book was introduced years ago to all workers of a gear manu-facturer. This book was a mandatory read for all employees nationwide, both factory and sales people. ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ by Spencer Johnson has been on the best seller lists since published in 1998. The idea behind everyone reading the book was because the company had sensed change was imminent and they want-ed everyone to be on board when it happened.

‘Cheese’ is a short read, about 45-60 minutes. It details four living be-ings; two mice and two littlepeople, small mortals similar to us living in a ‘maze’ who encounter unexpect-ed change when they discover that their ‘cheese’ has disappeared. All four adapt differently as they dis-

He and outside salesman, Tony Padilla, took some customers fi shing while in Hawaii for Walters’ com-pany trip in January, when Garen made the big catch. It was a challenge to bring the fi sh in, but well worth the effort and the highlight of the trip.

way change surprises anyone is when they don’t expect it and are not look-ing for it.

The book leaves it up to the reader as to the fate of the fourth littleper-son. It leaves us with the hope that he eventually ventured out in search of the ‘New Cheese’ and didn’t get left behind.

The story is a metaphor for any-thing in one’s life. We resist change because we’re afraid of the unknown. The ‘Maze’ can be our work, fami-lies, etc., and the ‘Cheese’ represents anything that that affects us, e.g. ca-reer, relationships, wealth, etc. When change is approaching, we need to decide whether to stick our heads in the sand, or embrace it. Change is constant, whether welcomed or not. It could be a new computer system (there’s the collective gasp from the reading audience), it could be a move to a new location, or even as dramatic as the way a company goes to mar-ket.

The gear company gave everyone three days to read the book as there

was to have company meetings in all offices in the country. There was a group discussion; a sort of a motiva-tion rally held on that day. The busi-ness was introducing new products, had mandated more training for all salespeople and were about to an-nounce a consolidation of duties. This 1) allowed time for everyone to be on board when it happened, 2) to ac-cept that change was coming, and 3) be prepared for the inevitable, or be left behind. As always, some fought the changes. Some came around; but others didn’t and could never catch up. Those that accepted the changes en-joyed less stress and more success as they learned to deal with the situation. The parallels between the employees and the mice and littlepeople were as-tounding.

The goal of the company through having everyone read the book was to get everyone to realize that change could lead to something better; and that change was going to happen whether or not they were prepared for it. It was a huge success and the cost was nomi-nal based upon the results. The changes came and, for those who welcomed it,

it was a smooth transition. This company had foreseen the future

and actually announced the change. Unfortunately, most people won’t have this luxury. It will be (and has been) a shock to most. The fortunate ones saw change coming; they read the ‘Hand-writing on the Wall’ (also from the book) and placed themselves into roles that prepared them for today.

Companies that employ people who embrace and accept change will be ready for the future. If we can take away a few lessons from the book, they are: 1) to acknowledge that change happens, 2) to anticipate change, 3) monitor change, 4) adapt quickly, 5) change your habits, 6) enjoy the change, and 7) get ready to change again!

The National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED) has named Rocklan Lawrence, President and CEO of National Electric Supply, Inc., as the in-coming Western Region Vice President-elect. I.C.U. TEAM SCORES A VICTORY FOR MY VALENTINE

When you walk into the inner sanctum of a modern hospital’s In-tensive Care Unit the marriage of man and machine puts the practice of medicine on a whole new level. This is especially true if a patient in one of those heavily cabled pri-vate rooms with all the blinking lights, honking horns, and gyrat-ing hardware is the most precious person in your life; in this case my wife, Bobbi.

After spending a touch-and-go month and a half observing an I.C.U. team in action I have a new found respect for healers, and a sense of humility for how much their collective skills and experi-ences impact our lives.

(The I.C.U. is a place where an extra pillow seems to be given as much importance as all that high tech hardware that covers the walls. Somehow this necessarily sterile environment is also one of the most humane places on the planet.)

MEDICAL FACILITIES EXPAND TO MEET FUTURE GROWTH

The importance the electrical in-dustry plays in making this level of health care possible also made this experience especially meaningful to me.

Every hospital seems to be under construction in Sacramento. Walk-ing in from the parking lot each day it felt good to spot the familiar Collins Electric trailer at this busy job site. It was like seeing an old friend’s face in a crowd of strang-ers.

Collins celebrated its 80th Anni-versary last year, and institutional projects rank high on the firm’s di-verse business plan.

When Collins was founded in 1928, the company’s gross an-nual income was $2,000, there were four employees, and running equipment consisted of a Model T Ford, Dodge Truck, and Overland business/pleasure automobile.

Health care has become an even bigger business as baby boomers develop the aches and pains that come with sedentary lifestyle and, yes, age. Lots of US have chosen to retire here in the north state be-tween California’s perfect Pacific coastline and the majestic Rocky Mountains, but one important rea-son has nothing to do with geog-raphy…

Quality health care is high on our list of priorities these days, and my hometown has a lot to offer.

Take the team in the Third Floor I.C.U. at Kaiser South Sacramento for example. Each player has a multitude of responsibilities that mesh into a diverse mechanism for success that could be compared with a Super Bowl championship, or an Indianapolis 500 checkered flag.

The difference here is that victory is measured on a life and death ba-sis in the I.C.U. There are no large, gaudy rings, or a big bottle full of milk in the winner’s circle.

WAR TIME WOUNDS GAVE BIRTH TO INTENSIVE CARE

Florence Nightingale left for the Crimean War in 1854. Once at the front she separated seriously wounded from the other patients, and reduced mortality from 40 per-cent to two percent on the battle-field thus creating the concept of intensive care.

This sainted English nurse did well with the tools available; how-

ever, imagine how fascinated Flor-ence would be if she could visit a modern day I.C.U. I have a feeling she would fit right in with those treasured healers who have fol-lowed her career path.

MAJOR INVESTMENT MEANS GROWTH, JOBS, & “L-I-F-E”

Let’s get back to all that work in progress just outside the windows of today’s I.C.U.

There is a $300-million expansion project taking shape out there on Kaiser South Sacramento’s carefully manicured 42-acre medical center campus. A new five-story hospital tower will nearly double bed space, and an already state-of-the-art emer-gency room is expanding too.

(There is also a new parking structure that means people should no longer have to hitch hike from the Park & Ride on Highway 99… Just kidding, everybody, the exer-cise was good for me!)

Over the next decade, this one health care provider will spend $3.2-billion in facilities serving the Greater Sacramento Area. To me, this kind of commitment has always meant community growth, jobs, and a better quality of life.

Now, however, that word “life” seems to say it all.

Basic School—The Basic School is a general, but still technical, over-view of On-Site Power Generation equipment. The Basic School is de-signed for those who are working in non-technical positions (such as Sales or Marketing, Administrative, or Company Management positions) and for those with less than three years experience working in the in-dustry. As a result, we have “light-ened up” several modules to make them more suitable for less experi-enced or non-technical personnel.

Advanced School—In comparison to the Basic School, the Advanced School will offer more highly tech-nical and in-depth coverage of the equipment. The Advanced School is designed for those who have attend-ed the EGSA Basic On-Site Power Generation School; those who are employed in Engineering, Project Management, or Service positions; and for those with over three years experience in the industry. The Ad-vanced School features “beefed up” modules and covers technical as-pects in a more in-depth manner and offers three new modules—“Starting Systems,” “Emissions,” and “Noise Control.”

A new, low-profile, linear LED lighting system is the lat-est addition to the DanaLite line of architectural linear lighting products from Juno Lighting Group. The DL100 modular, LED linear lighting system was designed to illu-minate coves, shelves and cor-nice lighting, as well as display cases, task lighting and hand-rails, as a miniature directional source for white light applica-tions.

The DL100 linear lighting system incorporates the latest LED technology. A key advan-tage is its ultra slim profile, only 1/2”H x 1”W. When Concord Electric was tasked to upgrade the computer and media infrastructure for the Immaculata - LaSalle High School, a private Catholic high school in Miami Florida, the limited room for cable runs presented an instal-lation challenge. Power outlets for each student computer were positioned next to each desk, and there was not

space available for multiple conduit runs. By using SIMTRA power cables, Concord was able to pull the projector wir-ing, TV Cable, speaker wire, data cable, and AC power all in one conduit into the room, breaking out CAT5 Ethernet cable and AC for the individual student stations. Also, because the SIMTRA cable could be run through the small space in the floor, Concord was able to eliminate the extra step of sup-porting the cables every four feet, a new standard required when running low-voltage ca-ble through ceilings.

“A big benefit of the SIMTRA cable is time savings on a job and streamlining the installation to meet code,” explains Linen-felser. “Also whenever you go through a classroom wall, the building codes consider it a fire-wall, and that requires a whole new set of rules. What’s benefi-cial with SIMTRA is that we ac-tually run one large conduit from the classrooms to the main room where the high voltage and low voltage all converge, eliminat-ing the need for multiple pen-etrations of the firewalls. With Immaculata-LaSalle, SIMTRA cable actually made this installa-tion possible.”

For several years, back in the late 80’s, there was a small group of guys that played golf a few times a year. That group included Bob Bremser, Glenn Muranaka, Bob Bernal, and Kelly Shay.

It’s Been 18 Years And They Are Back Where They StartedThey came up with the idea to get a few more guys together and have a more formal tournament. As the end of 1991 approached they decided to golf at Diamond Bar Golf Course on the Thurs-day between Christmas and New Year’s Day. They made some calls and on the day of the tour-nament they had 3 groups which included Bob Bremser, Glenn Muranaka, Bob Bernal, Kelly Shay, Tim Kiernan, Greg Grant, Randy Petak, Brent Holt, Gregg Holt, Mike Butala and Ed Gray.

That first tournament was so much fun that at one point Tim Kiernan, currently a sales rep with Prudential Lighting, sug-gested that they do this once a month. He would chair the next “Last Thursday of the Month Golf Tourney”, which ended up turning into a bi-annual event. Since then the “Last Thursday Golf Tourney”

occurs in June and December. A new commissioner is selected at the end of each tournament so that a new person is burdened with the task of gathering 15 – 20 golfers from the electrical in-

dustry; not always an easy task. The group has golfed at many loca-

tions including Long Beach Munici-pal Golf Course, Mile Square Classic Course, and Anaheim Hills Golf Course. The groups have been small and large; with the largest being about 90 players at Eagle Glen with Greg Grant as their commissioner. The golfers come from all areas of our industry; contractors, lighting reps, and distributors. “The tournament provides us with the oppor-tunity to see people in the industry that we don’t normally see” says Kelly Shay of Apollo Electric.

Eighteen years later they are still go-ing at it, a lot of the original members are still active. They continue to select a new commissioner every time and they use the blind draw which they imple-mented at the very beginning to select their winners; even the most challenged golfer has come out a winner. The win-ter of 2008 brought 32 golfers back to the Diamond Bar Golf Course, with Bob Bernal acting as commissioner. The great thing about this tournament is that in all these years they have maintained their tradition of keeping it casual. There are no customers or vendors in this tour-nament only golfers.

120 manufacturers of lighting equipment will display their prod-ucts at the Santa Monica Civic Au-ditorium on February 26, 2009. This is the 14th year that the Los Angeles Section of the Illuminating Engineer-ing Society has presented a lighting show to fund the Sol Goldin Scholar-ship Program. Last year $10,000.00 was awarded to local university stu-dents who participated in an annual design competition.

BICSI RELEASES NEW ENTRY-LEVEL CABLING INSTALLATION COURSEBICSI, the association supporting the information transport systems (ITS) in-dustry with information, education and knowledge assessment, announces the introduction of the IN101: BICSI ITS Installer 1 Training.

IN101 is a comprehensive fi ve-day course for those with little or no cabling installation experience. It is designed to provide students with the necessary background, knowledge and basic skills needed to function effectively on the job.
