What share of all professional vacancies are in Tech? What are the most in-demand skills for Tech professionals in different industries? Which IT specialisms are hottest in SMEs?
In this Market Insight:
The UK digital and tech industries are growing 32% faster than the rest of the UK economy, in turnover terms.
Over the past 24 months, IT openings in Financial Services have been falling. The big drop happened in September of last year, and was followed by the usual seasonal decline in winter. Data analysts are the most in-demand Tech specialists in Financial Services; most of these positions require a high level of SQL and SAS knowledge, and skills in R or Python are also valuable.
In Healthcare, the share of IT roles consistently grew, showing a 37% increase over the past 24 months. 17% of all IT vacancies in the sector were for Analysts, and demand for them is growing, while demand for IT Support (18% of vacancies) and IT Development & Engineering (12%) roles is falling.
Consumer Goods & Services shows a higher demand for UI/UX developers than other industries. Experience with front-end web technologies, particularly HTML, CSS and JavaScript, is usually required for these vacancies.
Large and medium enterprises show positive hiring trends, while small companies are on a downward curve. Smaller firms are more sensitive to economic instability, hence, the decrease might be caused by the uncertainty brought by the recent referendum.
Small firms have proportionately more roles for developers and engineers, and they are often required to work with two or more high-level programming languages. In large enterprises, IT Management roles with PMO, SCRUM and analytics skills hold a bigger share of roles.
