MOVIES J ohn Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) lives a happy life as a veterinarian, resid- ing on a large estate along with rescued and adopted ani- mals, in Victorian England. But when his wife dies, he becomes a hermit, cutting him- self off from human interaction... till he is called to duty once again when the Queen becomes gravely ill, and the future of the estate is at stake. The animals are all inherently charming due to the visual designs which embody their characteris- tics, and thanks to the voice actors playing them. Standouts include Emma Thompson as Poly – a maternal figure for Dolittle; Kumail Nanjiani as Plimpton – Dolittle’s reluctant and often-cowardly steed, and Octavia Spencer as Dab-Dab – Dolittle’s assistant who mistakes vegetables for his medical equip- ment. Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen are at their scenery-chewing best as the colourful King Rassouli and text- book villain Mudfly, respectively. It’s easy to see how these quirks make for running gags and count- less jokes. Unfortunately, not all of them work. TIMES OF INDIA INSTA-HIT! Starring Scarlett Johansson in the lead, the film is set to trace the origin story of the famed Russian assassin Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a Black Widow, who eventually becomes a member of the Avengers. The teaser starts on an emotional note with Natasha talking to Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, from ‘Avengers: Endgame’. “I used to have nothing. Then I got this job, this family. But nothing lasts forever,” she says. Natasha sets out to wrap up some “unfin- ished business” that takes her and fellow member of the Red Room, Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh), back to the place it all started. Packed with gripping combat scenes, gunfights, and chase sequences and a whole range of new stealth suits, this teaser has something for everyone. From Al Pacino to Nicole Kidman, Michael Dou- glas to Meryl Streep, Hollywood A-lis- ters are starring in, and producing, TV shows, even winning accolades for them. This year’s Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award nomina- tions had quite a few of these top stars competing for the gong. Some of them, like Nicole Kidman and Reese Wither- spoon, already have more TV shows on the way. Kidman will star in ‘Nine Per- fect Strangers’ and Witherspoon in ‘Little Fires Everywhere’. These actors are also perfect examples of the kind of salaries A-listers are demanding for TV. For in- stance, both Kidman and With- erspoon will be making at least $1 million per episode for some shows. Here is a list of celebrities and the Award shows they won or were nominated for this year... NICOLE KIDMAN Kidman was nominated for ‘Best Actress In A Drama series’ for the second season of HBO’s ‘Big Little Lies’ at the 2020 Golden Globes. This is her second consecutive Golden win for the same series. Along with Witherspoon, Kidman is also the producer of ‘Big Little Lies’. MICHAEL DOUGLAS Douglas won the Golden Globe for ‘Best Actor’ in a TV series (Musical or Comedy) – ‘The Kominsky Method’. He was also nominated for the same category at the Screen Actor’s Guild awards. HELEN MIRREN Mirren was nominat- ed for ‘Best Actress’ in a limited series at the Golden Globes for ‘Catherine the Great.’ MICHELLE WILLIAMS Williams, known for movies like ‘Blue Valentine’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’, won the Golden Globe Award and SAG as ‘Best Actress in a Limited Series’ for ‘Fosse / Verdon’. She won an Emmy this year for the role too! REESE WITHERSPOON Witherspoon was nomi- nated for a Golden Globe for ‘Best Actress in a Drama Series’ for ‘The Morning Show’. She also appeared in the second season of ‘Big Little Lies’ this year. Her next TV role is ‘Little Fires Everywhere’. RUSSELL CROWE Crowe transformed into Roger Ailes, the infamous Fox News CEO for ‘The Loudest Voice’. He won the Golden Globes for ‘Best Actor in a Limited Series’ – his first Globe nomination in 14 years. He was also nominated in the same category for SAG. MAHERSHALA ALI Ali, who won two Oscars in three years for ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Green Book,’ was nominated for a SAG award for ‘Best Actor in a Limited Series’ category for his role in the third season of HBO’s ‘True Detective’. He was nominated for an Emmy for the role earlier this year, but lost. SAM ROCKWELL Rockwell, who won an Oscar for 2017’s ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,’ also won the SAG for ‘Best Actor in a Limited Series’ for ‘Fosse Verdon’. He was also nominated for an Emmy for the role this year. MERYL STREEP Three-time Oscar winner Streep was nomi- nated for Globe in the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category for ‘Big Little Lies’. She broke her own Globes nomination record, with this being her 34th one. ‘Big Little Lies’ is her third TV nomination. TOP 5 PROTEST MOVIES TO WATCH DOES LITTLE, BUT YOU CAN LAUGH 1 MEDIUM COOL: Cine- matographer Haskell Wexler made a stunning debut as a feature director with ‘Medium Cool’, a film about the 1968 anti-Vietnam protests dur- ing the Democratic National Convention. In the movie’s biggest coup, Wexler and his cast actually filmed during the real life protests in 1969. 2 MILK: Gus Van Sant’s biopic of LGBT rights leader Harvey Milk, won Sean Penn his sec- ond Oscar. ‘Milk’ traces the rise of its titular hero from his nerdy queer days to becoming a national celebri- ty and civil rights activist. The movie is emotionally devastating but Penn never tries to show Harvey Milk as a hero. He is an ordinary man fight- ing deep-seated societal prejudices. 5 V FOR VENDETTA: The cine- matic adaptation of Alan Moore’s seminal graphic nov- el caused a stir in 2005, galvanis- ing the anti-Bush forces furious over the Second Iraq War, and curb- ing of civil liberties. ‘V’ embodies the essence of a rebellion rising in an authoritarian state. The mys- terious hero dons a mask; he could be you, me, or anyone else... 3 SELMA: While not a biopic of Martin Luther King, Jr. per se, Ava DuVerney’s ‘Selma’ shines a light on the private life of Ameri- ca’s defining civil rights leader. As played by David Oyelowo, King is a brave and heroic man, while also plagued by insecurity, and philandering to boot. The movie’s best scenes involve King’s con- frontations with his wife Coretta, as the two strug- gle with their own imperfections, rather than sys- temic political issues. 4 HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE: For shockingly real images of protests, look no further than ‘How to Survive a Plague’. Director David France’s exami- nation of the AIDS epidemic in- cludes actual footage of activists like Peter Staley and Larry Kramer, raising hell over gov- ernment inaction to fight HIV, with eyewitness accounts. These movies are rated as ‘the top 5 films about protest and change’. These stories moved and inspired people all over the world...
