What is the Tooele Business Resource Center?By Nicole Cline, Director, Tooele County Economic Development

Each of us receives firsthand experience that clearly shows how sluggish the

economy is. It is hard to find someone who doesn’t express frus-tration with the actions or inaction of governments in responding by creating viable solutions to bolster economic growth.

Now, I’m not offering to solve the world’s economic woes or to cast opinion on who should do what in the various levels of government, but I am telling the people in Tooele County what we are doing to help. Throughout this economic downturn, a common question is raised again and again, “There’s help for those on Wall Street, what about those of us on Main Street?” I hear you loud and clear.

Our local elected officials hear you loud and clear. While we often make the news for having worked on a larger project that decides to locate in Tooele Coun-

ty, there is the investment in what we have now.

The purpose of the Business Re-source Center (BRC) is to provide resources and programs that will foster economic growth. We are taking a comprehensive approach as we can provide service to both the larger companies in corpo-rate recruiting to locate in Tooele County, but we provide service to those on Main Street. Our Busi-ness Resource Center:• Promotes Tooele County as a

viable location for business. We work with site locators, corpo-rate real estate people that are looking to expand or relocate a larger business. We make sure that company can create jobs intended for Tooele County resi-dents, business opportunity for our local enterprises and bring a capital investment that results in taxes to helps us provide gov-ernment services at a level we expect while keeping the costs down;

• Offers business counseling ser-

vices where owners and opera-tors can get confidential advice to make the operation of their business more efficient and ef-fective. Running a business is a difficult task and being able to take the time to research com-plex issues is usually impossible. We can help you with research, interpretation of the data, and be a sounding board so you can make the best decision for your business. We don’t run your business; we are here to provide advice so you can. This is for Wall Street or Main Street.

• Takes an unusual approach for a department of government, we are proactive! You don’t have to seek us out, but you can if you wish. We are bringing the resources to you. Our business outreach specialists are VISTA volunteers. They work with us to provide you information and networking opportunities you may not be aware of. Our Business Expansion and Re-tention (BEAR) program has

collaborated with a number of agencies and organizations that have beneficial products and services aimed at lowering your overhead costs and grow your business. Whether it is a new employee or looking at lowering your benefit package costs, we will work to get the right people in touch with you. You will have one specialist that will draw in the resources that addresses your business need.Ok, Main Street, I have an of-

fer you can’t refuse. Except for some advanced courses, all we do is FREE. And that is the majority of our services. I want to give you the kind of service that you expect from your government, and build our economy which will put people to work. We’re team player that works to benefit us all. You can call us at (435) 843-4792. Stop in to our office in the Tooele County office building at 47 South Main, Tooele, Utah 84074. If you see something we can do to improve our service, I ask that you give me a call.

Tooele Downtown Business Alliancewritten bu Summer Sigritz

Businesses of Tooele are shin-ing brighter and brighter with each passing day, and the

Tooele Downtown Business Alliance is sheer proof of that. Formed about nine years ago, local businesses and property owners have created an or-ganization which helps renovate and improve the community economi-cally. Most businesses from Utah Ave. and 100 South to 100 East and 50 West have invested their time into this alliance. So that means over 80 businesses and property owners are included in this coalition and they have managed to spread the welfare to many businesses in need.

The Façade Grant Program is geared towards paying rent and help-ing in the up-keep of the stores in these tough economical times. With these grants the Downtown Alliance openly pays for 50% of the whole cost of repairs for various businesses within the Downtown Alliance, to ensure our downtown community does not parish. Recently, the alli-ance helped out a fellow member by refurnishing the front of the Heritage Homes and Fireplaces store.

Corey Price, owner of Area 52 Computers which is computer service and repair. Corey is also the Chairman of the Downtown Alliance organization and he offered some ad-vice about how a local business could seek help and attempt to thrive in Tooele: first, there are services run by the county that are available to busi-nesses, so always keep your eyes open for opportunity. Second, look for your resources. Most will not come running to you; rather you must show a need for such effects. Finally, third, there are programs willing to educate businesses and property owners to further their knowledge in business strategy and financial help.

Another perk to being involved with the alliance is being able to be

on the Tooele Downtown Alliance Discount Card. This gives people the ability to cross market and gain posi-tive community response in return.

This Halloween, the Downtown Alliance hosted a much anticipated downtown trick-or-treat. Last year’s event hosted around 3,000 kids of all ages and their parents as the local businesses handed out deli-cious treats in a successful attempt to promote their business as well as providing a safe trick-or-treat environment for the kids. The event went from 4-7pm on the night of Halloween. Kids were dressed in crazy, colorful and creepy outfits and wandered the streets with open bags ready to receive candy that was generously provided by the various downtown businesses.

Main Street was filled with people as businesses such as Stowe Family Music, New 2 You Thrift Store, Roni’s Signs, and Sweet Lizzie’s passed out treats; Mane Trenz Salon even did face paintings.

By the end of this event, every-thing seemed to have run smoothly and everyone went home with a smile on their face and a large as-sortment of sweets in their bags. The Downtown Alliance sure looks promising; Tooele has benefitted from their efforts immensely.

fort and money into the project, the building was beautifully renovated and many of its architectural details were restored.

“I love being in downtown Tooele,” says Bryant. “To me it is the epicenter of locally owned and

operated businesses, and I think it is becoming more of a hub for shoppers and diners every day. It’s exciting to be a part of a revitaliza-tion effort like that.”

When asked what is the secret to owning a successful retail business, Bryant shrugs her shoulders and answers, “I think some of it is luck, some hard work and, most impor-tantly, you need a strong support system. If it weren’t for my family,

friends, our fabu-lous employees and our talented craft-ers, Homebodies wouldn’t be what it is today.”

written by Summer Sigritz

My name is Summer Sigritz and I am a senior attending Stansbury High School. I am pursuing the

field of journalism. I now have the opportu-nity of being able to work for the Chamber of Commerce as an intern and writer for their Chamber business news.

I am originally from Southern California;

I moved to West Jordan in 2006 and moved to Stans-bury Park almost two years ago. I excel in all things musical. I play the alto sax-ophone, guitar, drums, sing, and some piano. Writing is another passion of mine that

I hope to continue; starting my career with SLUG Magazine and beyond. I have formed

a punk band as well as many solo projects. You’ll find me in stores such as Urban

Outfitters and Forever 21 and listening to radio stations like KRCL. My favorite bands include Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and many others. I hope to change the way people read the news by writing in a way that will entice readers like the way my favorite band entices me with their lyrics.

As I have began to experience writing

in a new light, I have come to love the way you can provoke emotions and thoughts by putting a few words on paper. Writing for the Chamber of Commerce and my school newspaper has given me a taste of the real journalism world as well as a head start on my future. I will be along for the ride with this business news for the rest of my school year, and I hope you all enjoy my articles. It’s such a privilege to help!

Platinum Offers a Helping Hand to Local Homeowners

Headed Toward ForeclosureDistressed property expert urges

homeowners struggling with mort-gage payments to pursue lower-impact alternatives

“Nationwide, 10.9 million or 22.5 percent of all homeowners with a mortgage owe more on their prop-erty than it is worth in the current market, and another 6.3 million are in some stage of foreclosure,” noted Andrea Cahoon of RE/MAX Platinum.

A Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE), Cahoon pointed out that the long-term implications of foreclosure cannot be underesti-mated, and has developed a report entitled, “Need a Helping Hand?”

This report can be accessed from www.UtahHomeownerHelp.com .

“Too often, the anxiety associated with missed mortgage payments and the fear of putting trust into the wrong hands, causes homeowners who are heading toward foreclosure to avoid seeking help or pursuing a short sale,” Cahoon said.

A short sale occurs when the current market value of a home is worth less than what is owed on a mortgage and a real estate agent negotiates with the lender on behalf of a financially strapped homeowner to accept a loan payoff that is less than the amount owed. “While lenders were once reluctant to nego-tiate short sales, the current glut of foreclosed properties on their books has prompted an aggressive push to mitigate losses, and some are even

paying homeowners significant cash incentives to make a fresh start on their lives after the close of the short sale,” Cahoon explained.

Real Estate Agents who have received the Certified Distressed Property Expert (CDPE) designa-tion have proactively sought out the real estate industry’s best training for serving clients within the compli-cated and highly charged distressed property arena. CDPE agents are required to complete two days of intensive training and are held to a high standard of expertise, efficien-cy, and ethics.

For more information about the CDPE Designation, visit www.CDPE.com .

Eco-Friendly Shredding Event at HeritageWest Credit Union Collects 9,000 Pounds of Secure Information for Members

Credit Union shreds five tons of paper waste for recycling

Tooele, Utah (September 27, 2011) - When it comes to the environment, HeritageWest Credit Union walks the talk. A half day shredding event called “Shred-It” at the North Tooele Branch at 88 East 1000 North this past Saturday col-lected more than 9,000 pounds of paper waste for recycling. Recycling just one ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, three cubic yards of landfill space, two barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Bruce Bryan, Regional President of HeritageWest Credit Union, said the annual shredding event is “something our members ask about all summer long. By collecting 9,000 pounds of paper we helped save 85 trees.”

Participants received bags that say “Proudly saving 500 trees every year through our recycling efforts.” In addition to the annual Shred-It event, HeritageWest has a daily recycling program at the North Tooele office as well as the other four branches.
