It all starts in 2010, when ring leader Tony Roucas, a.k.a. Mad Tony, who is serving a long-term prison sentence, and Kenz a young North African delinquent from an estate, escape from prison. In this 21st century over-crowded prison, they share the same tiny cell. They have absolutely nothing in common and have nothing to say to each other. Their escape reveals their differences even more, where the old methods of organized crime (with carefully planned missions, codes and complex networks) conflict with the new ones (fast, immediate, less prepared).Tony faces his past and exposes the cops and crooks who sent him to jail. Several flashbacks take us back to his hectic past, from the 50s up to the 80s including the events of 1968 and paint a vivid picture of the history of organized crime.

do’s tragic events. The search for a father, the death of a son, a break up, betrayed friendship, conflict of gene-rations. These perpetual themes are sometimes treated with comedy or lightness and sometimes with gravity following a complex and gripping storyline. Across se-veral different eras portrayed through flashbacks, we’ll slowly drift from glamour to realism.Filming with the camera on one’s shoulder places the characters in a certain urgency which echos parts of their lives. Leaving the actors a certain freedom in front of the camera brings them closer to reality. The background is also made up of the changes in society and the changes in the city. The city is Paris and its inner suburbs. Retraced decades after decades. Showing Paris through the fifty years in one man’s life will enable us to measure the gap between Kenz’s generation and Tony’s.We must therefore go beyond the usual clichés in order to create an instant bond between the characters and Describing in such a simple way people who face chaos and society’s complexity, desanctifying the gangster, our aim is to make a flamboyant, unique, enthusiastic series. A series that gives itself the means for it to succeed.
Gilles Bannier
With more and more rules and laws governing our lives, we are fascinated by transgression. That’s why we im-mediately identify with the outlaws who are bold enough to do what we can’t do. Gangster films have always been written on that basis, and with time the genre has de-velopped its own mythology. I am deeply fascinated by those men who have also chosen to keep their childhood spirit alive (anger, whims, huge egos). They’ve chosen to be free but paradoxically that’s what makes them lose their freedom. Prison or death are always at the end of the road.Everything or almost everything has been done with Gangster films. All eras and all film genres have their share of Gangster classics. From «Scarface» to «Gomor-ra» or «Once upon a time in America».This series, «Les Beaux mecs», is remarkable for its length. The saga format is 100% acknowledged. We can therefore describe the characters’ lives and take the time needed to tell the main storylines as well as the fine de-tails of Tony’s epic adventures and those of the people around him.Another feature of the series is its mixing of the genres. The comedy which comes from opposing different gene-rations of people counterbalances Tony, Claire and Gui-

These flashbacks, long or short, capital or otherwise, don’t follow a chronological order. The reconstitution of what brings Tony back to the world of organized crime is like a jigsaw, revealing time and characters randomly. Each flashback can be filmed “in the style of” bringing to mind the films of that era, because the history of the un-derworld is also the history of the way its story was told.Watching the episodes unfolding, and without forgetting the main character’s primary quest, we are taken from the crazy seventies back to his childhood in the fifties and then to the sixties when he was first sent to prison, his meeting with Guido, his mother’s death and his en-counter with Nathalie in ‘68... Among the crimes he was forced to commit and the ones he deliberately commit-ted, he crossed paths with many crooks and many wo-men all of whom are emblematic of their time.
How have «Beaux mecs» evolved between 1945 and now? Who are they? How did they adapt to changes in society? To globalization? Are they better or worse than their forefathers? Through real life inspired godfathers and thugs, 50 years of criminality are revealed through eight 52 minute epi-sodes, each one focusing on a specific era of organized crime. The narrative of the series follows Tony’s quest, interrup-ted with flashbacks which allow us to gradually piece to-gether his tumultuous past within organized crime. Each flashback enables the story to move forward, bringing Tony closer to Kenz. Tony gets fonder of him and teaches him “the job». The flashbacks (exploring a certain era of his life per episode) are like drawers Tony pulls out in order to find clues and explanations which will help him to deal with the present.
Producer’s statementA «beau mec» is the underworld’s slangfor a crook, for a real man.
