About Your Presenter

• Tony Fortunato is a Sr Network Performance Specialist with The Technology Firm( th t hfi ) h h i ith t i i d i i l t ti(www.thetechfirm.com) who has experience with training, design, implementation,and troubleshooting networks since 1989.

• Latest projects include designing and supporting high speed wireless residentialinternet for the Halton Hills Area Physical area supported was approximately 800internet for the Halton Hills Area. Physical area supported was approximately 800square kilometers and included 7 towers.

• Involved with replacing/upgrading customer modems, tower redesign, training helpdesk and creating Network Management system and designing a Fair Access Policydesk and creating Network Management system and designing a Fair Access Policysystem.

• Tony will teach or troubleshoot on your network, with your staff and tools as part ofhis customized onsite training service.

UNLICENSED ConsequencesSpectrum Analysis

UNLICENSED Consequences

• Since WIFI is not licensed anything could use that frequency• Since WIFI is not licensed, anything could use that frequency.

• Obvious wireless devicesCordless phones– Cordless phones

– Wireless cameras

• Some are not obvious• Some are not obvious– Bluetooth – Microwave

Baby monitor– Baby monitor– Wireless speakers– Video signal extenders

HVAC Systems/Sensors– HVAC Systems/Sensors– Utility smart meters

Mixed SignalsSpectrum Analysis

Mixed SignalsSomething else to consider:

– What do you do when;• your municipality installs City-Wide WIFI?• the local coffee shop lights up a hot spot?

– How do you control which access points your users connect to within your network and OUTSIDE your network?

– How often do you check for new access points, or DO YOU ?

Auto Pattern DetectionSpectrum Analysis

Auto Pattern DetectionThe system identifies and lists persistent RF patterns that do not match its database ofinterferers. The user may name and save the pattern in order to have it show up as a

d i f i h f h h i d dnamed interferer in the future when that pattern is detected.

Find Device Tool Spectrum Analysis

The Find Device tool enables the user to find any device (WiFi or non-WiFi) that the application hasdetected. You can launch the Find Device screen by clicking the Find Device button. Once on the FindDevice screen, you can select the device of interest and use the application to physically locate thedevice on the network. The screen shows in real time the signal strength (if the device in question isa non-WiFi device) or signal strength and noise level (if it is a WiFi device). You can also turn on theaudio feature to assist in locating the device: the closer you approach the device, the louder it ticks.

Who’s on what?Channel OccupancyWho s on what?

When designing or monitoring your wireless network you need to be able to see what channels are in use.

Consider testing with various devicesConsider testing with various devices

• i.e laptop, android smartphone, iphone, ipad, android tablet since they all have different antennas and radiosradios

• Depending on the make and model of your access point,

Tuning and Optimization

There are many options you can adjust depending on the design goals of your Wireless network

The hardest part is picking the primary criteria for your design. Here are my options:• Coverage or Convenience• Performance• SecurityF lFor example:• Enable AP or client isolation will reduce broadcast and multicast packets as

well as provide a level of security• Using WPA2 on 802 11n will give you approx double the throughout youUsing WPA2 on 802.11n will give you approx double the throughout you

would get using WEP• 2.4 Ghz has better coverage when compared to 5 Ghz
