A PAIR OF WINSThis past weekend, the Steel got back in the win column with victories Friday against Cedar Rapids, 5-1, and Saturday versus Bloomington, 2-1. Five different players tallied goals in Friday’s game, and netminder Peter Thome registered 26 saves. On Saturday, Graham Lillibridge and Eduards Tralmaks recorded goals, and Ales Stezka stopped all but one of Bloomington’s shots, as the Steel wrapped up the I-55 Rivalry season series with a 4-1-0-1 record against the Thunder.
FEBRUARY POWER RANKINGS: STILL #1The usahockeymagazine.com USHL February Power Rankings were released Friday and the Chicago Steel (25-8-1-3) remain atop the overall standings. In total, 21 media members ranked the teams from 1st to 17th and the votes were compiled into an overall monthly ranking. Chicago received 18 first-place votes, while the Dubuque Fighting Saints (2) and Sioux City Musketeers (1) also earned nominations. The Steel have been on top of Power Rankings each month this season except for December, when listed right behind the Sioux City Musketeers.
The Steel posted a 5-3-0-0 record in the month of January. Chicago enters this weekend’s action with a league-best 54 points, as well as being ranked in the top five in both special teams categories — power play (17.0%, T-4th) and penalty kill (91.4%, 1st). With 23 games remaining in the regular season, the Steel are looking to earn a spot in the USHL Clark Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. Chicago’s offense is led by left wing Reggie Lutz, who has recorded 32 (16G+16A) points this season, 10th best in the USHL.
PHANTOMS COME TO TOWNYoungstown makes its first visit of the season to the Fox Valley this weekend, facing the Steel on Friday and Saturday, before making one more stop here on March 26. The Steel went 1-1 in their two visits to Youngstown earlier this season, including Chicago’s first loss of the season Oct. 30 — a 3-2 defeat Oct. 30 which ended the Steel’s USHL Tier 1 record-tying 10 win streak to start the 2016-2017 campaign.
The Phantoms are currently sitting in the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Youngstown is led by Belarusian netminder Ivan Kulbakov, who sports the second-best GAA (1.96) in the USHL, and has also played the second-most minutes (1895) of all goalies in the league.
