by Dr. Dave MinnerWhere do I go to get specific guide-
lines for layout and dimensions ofsports fields? Specifically, I'm interest-ed in the size of the base cutouts for anall-grass, women's fast-pitch softballfield.
-Bob Stonebraker
rass fields that host multiplesports will often cutout onlythe base and pitching
areas, so that these small skinnedareas can be easily sodded whenconverting the field for sportsother than baseball or softball. The circle cutout for home platemust have a 13-foot radius, whilethe picher's mound should have anine-foot radius cutout.
A 20-foot by 20-foot squareshould be used for all other baseareas (See Figure 1). Replace thecomer that faces the mound with a45-degree diagonal. This diagonalshould bisect the two sides closest tothe mound.
It's important to remember thatcutout bases are best suited for tem-porary fields. Permanent skinned infieldsare more durable, and are better suitedfor both softball and baseball.
Dimensions and field layoutDifferent associations may have
slightly different suggestions for field lay-out. Here are a few organizations thathave excellent printed guidelines for fielddimensions:• United States Baseball Federation2160 Greenwood Ave.Trenton, NJ 08609(608) 586-2381
• American Amateur Baseball Congress118 Redfield PlazaPO. Box 467Marshal, MI 49068(616) 781-2002• National Federation of State HighSchool AssociationsPO. Box 20626Kansas City, MO 64195(816) 464-5400

will have a set of guidelines for a suggest-ed field layout. The key word here is sug-gested. The specific dimensions for bound-ary lines, pitching distances, hash marks;and other field components can easily beobtained through the listed organiza-tions.
Even with the exact guidelines, thereare many undefined dimensions. Somequantities are not specifically deter-
mined, and are left to the discretionof the coaches and field managers. These include: the width of the basepath and the distance between thegrass and the foul line; the shape ofthe mound area; the coaching boxes; ..-the infield skin in the foul areaaround first and third bases; thecutout shape at first and third; andthe fungo, on deck, and batterapproach areas.
Sports turf managers shouldhave an official set of rules thatserve as guidelines for field dimen-sions. They should further under-stand that the loosely defined sug-gested dimensions offer a valuableopportunity to make changes thatwill allow more efficient manage-
ment. Where time and resources are lim-ited, an efficiently managed field oftentranslates to better and safer playing con-ditions. 0
