Meet Tonga Seely Titcomb. She is our new Vice President for the Judson Line. She is married to Ron Titcomb and they are both retired and live in Taylorsville, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. They are the parents of 2 girls & 3 boys and 15 beautiful grandchildren spread out all over the Country...that keeps them hopping back and forth from ocean to ocean. Tonga is the daughter of Eva Tolman Seely, wife of Que Seely of Mt. Pleasant, Utah. She is the granddaughter of Ephraim & Phebe Hogan Tolman, g. grand-daughter of Jaren & Mary Ann Briggs Tolman and the g.g granddaughter of Judson & Sarah Lucretia Holbrook Tolman.

Tonga is also a first cousin to our Publications Editor, Tom Tolman. They both have fond memories of visits to the family farm in Mt. Pleasant while they were growing up in the 1940-50’s. The photo to the right shows one of those visits with our cousins. The two on the left are Tom & Tonga, with Ray and Max, Tom’s older brothers. Good memories!

Tolman Family Newsletter January 2010

Dear Family, This Christmas I received as a gift from my mother, Opal Adams Tolman, a hard cover 636 page history of my father, entitled: William Odell Tolman, Patri-arch, Genealogist, Teacher, compiled by my sister, Loraine Tolman Pace and proofread by another sister, Shirlene Tolman. This priceless treasure is now available to my parents’ posterity of 162 descendants as well as numerous relatives and cousins. I have read with particular interest my father’s vision of the Tolman Family Genealogy Center and how it came to fruition with the help of many cousins, who donated labor, materials, and funds; and how it was dedicated 7 July 1978 by Elder S. Dilworth Young. With the passing of Arlin Tolman Mecham last month, most of that generation is gone as well as many in my generation. Therefore, we need you of the younger generations to step up and help the family or-ganization continue this most important work of saving both the living and the dead. Concerning the living, the Prophet Joseph Smith stated, “The first thing you do, go and seal on earth your sons and daughters, and yourself unto your fathers in eternal glory.” (TPJS p. 340) Concerning the dead, the Prophet stated, “The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead.” (TPJS, p. 356, D&C 128:15) “Those saints who neglect it in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.” (TPJS p. 193) In this New Year, may we all become more anxiously engaged in this most important work! Loraine has mini-research projects that can be done on your time schedule. We both attend the Family History Library almost every week to document the records of hundreds of ancestors on our data base where no documentation is given. It has been a rewarding experience to find the records of family members and bring them together so that their work can be completed. Contact Loraine and she will show you how easy this can be done. We also hope that you will contribute the annual family dues of $25.00 to help with the hiring of pro-fessional researchers in England to research the records that are not available to us here, and with repairs and upgrades that are needed to maintain our Genealogical Center. May God’s richest blessings be with you in this new year and may you be impressed with the desire to help the family in this sacred work. With Love and Best Wishes, John O. Tolman, President

Tolman Family Newsletter January 2010

Family Genealogists Report: Dear Family, As we enter this New Year I hope you will set some goals that will enrich your life and strengthen your family. SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW YEAR-FAMILY HISTORY GOALS: 1. CHECK OUT THE NEW FAMILY SEARCH: As most of you know, in our family organization we concentrate our research from Nathan Tolman’s genera-tion back. So you should check and correct your line from you to your great grandparents. When all the kinks are worked out of the New Family Search, we will submit the Tolman lines from Nathan back, including our extensive documentation. 2. DO THE ORDINANCE WORK: Likewise, we have not submitted names for temple work prior to Nathan Tolman. Therefore, if you have par-ents, grandparents, or great grandparents who have not received their ordinances, we are leaving that for you to accomplish and enjoy the blessings of that service. 3. SUPPORT THE FAMILY ORGANIZATION: This can be done by paying your annual dues today and encouraging your brothers and sisters and children to do the same. You can also purchase the histories and pictures that are produced for you. These assist us with research expenses. Volunteer some time to help. Just contact me. 4. SEND IN A RECORD OF YOUR POSTERITY: I will repeat this for the 100th time, “we must not lose the living while we are searching for the dead.” If you don’t update us on your family, who will? Please do not assume we have your records, if you have not person-ally sent them in. Do something today!!! 5. DO SOME PERSONAL RESEARCH: When doing research we begin with a person’s death and work forward - the information is more recent and will often give clues to earlier events in their lives. Here are some Tips for Effectively Searching Digitized Newspapers - Digitized versions of historic newspapers are an outstanding source of genealogical information. Yet, since many such newspapers are made searchable using imperfect OCR technology, actually finding the information you seek can be problematic. Search features vary greatly by newspaper archive, which will impact the search features available to you, but these tips should help you dig details on your ancestors out of just any digitized newspaper collection.

Search by Surname Only Use Subject Keywords Search by Date and Newspaper Don't Limit Your Search to Births, Marriages & Deaths Search Obituaries Search by Address Use the Clues You Find to Expand Your Search To read the full article: 7 Tips Source: Generations Newsletter, Washington DC Family History Center, 24 Oct 2009

Alta Rae Wilson Tolman died peacefully at her home in Logan, Utah, 19 Dec 2009. She married Elden Arthur Tolman 19 Jun 1944. He died 6 Oct 1952 and she reared their four children: Ellen Tolman Haddock, Marie Tolman Donigan, Tho-mas W. Tolman and Shirley Tolman Wolcott. Elden Tolman is the son of Cyrus & Eliza Ann Riley Tolman, grandson of Judson & Sarah Lu-cretia Holbrook Tolman.

Arlin Tolman Mecham 1922 ~ 2009

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather Arlin Tolman Mecham passed away December 12, 2009 with his loving wife of 60 years, his daughter and his granddaughter at his side. He was born in Salt Lake City on November 21,

1922 to Charlotte May Tolman and Leonidas Smart Mecham and grew up in Salt Lake City and various places in Idaho, graduating from Weston High School as valedictorian in 1941. He then went on to the University of Utah on a Basketball Scholarship. His college career was cut short by the advent of World War II, where he served in the Army in the Pacific arena. Toward the end of the war he was stationed in Hawaii for frogman training to prepare for the pre-D-day assault landing on the islands of Japan. The Atomic Bomb hastened the end of the war, most probably saving his life. He has always harbored a special love for his country and was proud to be an American. He was a lifelong, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and upon returning to civilian life chose to fulfill a full time mission to Australia. There, he established the pattern of service and leadership in the gospel of Jesus Christ that set the tone for the rest of his life. On September 9, 1949 he married Ruth May Woolley in the Salt Lake Temple, and they contributed six children to the post war baby boom. Their commitment to each other through "thick and thin" has been an inspiration. Arlin was a long time employee of Zions Bank, starting as a bookkeeper and culminating as President of Zions Mortgage Company at the time of his retirement. He served faith-fully in many callings in the Church, including Bishop in Rose Park, Priest Quorum Advi-sor, Counselor in the Val Verda Stake Presidency, and Gospel Doctrine Teacher. He served for many years as Patriarch of the Bountiful Utah North Canyon Stake. He espe-cially loved working with the youth in these capacities and helped foster testimony and leadership in the youth of the church. In his later years he also had the opportunity to work in the Bountiful Temple along with his wife. As his health declined, he still sought opportunities to be of service or to render some small acts of kindness. One of the heartaches of his life was the many challenges he faced with his declining health. In his better days he could always be found on the golf course on Saturday morning. Al-though we grieve at his passing we find joy in knowing that he has left his frail mortal body behind and is reunited with his many family members who have preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, his six children: Debra Burdett, Shirley (Doug) Larsen, Arlene (Doug) Rush, Carol Mecham, David (Nanette) Mecham, Lon (Kreada) Mecham, 18 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Other loving family members; Denise Argyle, brothers and sisters -in-law as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services with be held at the North Canyon 2nd Ward Bldg, 3300 South 100 East, Bounti-ful, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 17. Friends and family may visit on Wednesday, December 16 at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Ward Bldg. prior to services on Thursday.
