Tolerance Bringing Things Together

a b The seminar continues a multi-year inquiry into detail conditions, focusing on the broad topic of what constitutes a detail contemporary architectural practice. The seminar will explore hybrids between digital and manual craſt. The role of the detail will be studied in how it simultaneously clarifies schemac design intenons, and also reshapes them. The seminar will also examine what passes for ‘instructions for construction’ from historical examples to the use of BIM software. We will develop a deeper understanding between architectural graphics and specification texts that translate the design of details into the materials and methods of construction. c Tolerance: Detail Development This winter the seminar will explore the role of tolerance in detail design and how we step outside ourselves as designers: design tolerances, material and fabricaon tolerances, assembly tolerances. We will work to appreciate the limits of our control as designers and to celebrate the differences between our intenons and the physical properes of materials and the essenal and mul faceted contribuons of those who build for us. This seminar is dedicated to the ARCHITECTURAL DETAIL as a confluence of design intenon, human engagement and building performance. It examines the intertwined networks of material sourcing, component fabricaon, craſt and construcon assemblies. We will seek to understand what gets lost and what is gained in the inevitable translaons from drawing to building, and how we might benefit from both. The seminar will provide the background, structure and support for individual student research into detail condions that draw from historical and vernacular precedents and contemporary material and fabricaon processes. The seminar continues a multi-year inquiry into detail conditions, focusing on the broad topic of what constitutes a detail contemporary architectural practice. The seminar will explore hybrids between digital and manual craft. The role of the detail will be studied in how it simultaneously clarifies schematic design intentions, and also reshapes them. The seminar will also examine what passes for ‘instructions for construction’ from historical examples to the use of BIM software. We will develop a deeper understanding between architectural graphics and specification texts that translate the design of details into the materials and methods of construction.

We will work to appreciate the limits of our control as designers and to celebrate the differences between our intentions and the physical properties of materials and the essential and multi faceted contributions of those who build for us.
