Toledo will need a win over the Eagles to keep pace and set up a potential showdown in DeKalb on Nov. 9. Head Coach Tim Beckman knows nothing can be taken for granted, especially considering the challenges of Toledo’s last two victories. The Rockets have fallen behind early in each of of their last two conference games, only to rally for a win. Last Saturday, Toledo trailed Ball State, 17-0, before coming back, then holding on to win, 31-24. The Rockets scored 31 consecutive points before the Cardinals scored with 12 seconds left, recovered an onside kick and managed a Hail Mary pass on the game’s final play that was intercepted by Desmond Marrow. • Eastern Michigan (1-7, 1-3 MAC): Eastern Michigan is probably a more dangerous team today than they were a couple of weeks ago. The Eagles have tasted victory after 18 consecutive defeats, so Coach Ron English’s club has gained a valuable asset—confidence. Two weeks ago the Eagles rallied from a 21-0 deficit to defeat Ball State in Muncie in overtime, 41-38. EMU fell to Virginia last week, but only trailed 17-14 at halftime in a 48-21 defeat. The Eagles are led by sophomore QB Alex Gillett, who has thrown for 1,146 yards and 10 touchdowns, and also run for a team-best 462 yards and four TDs. Second-year Head Coach Tim Beckman is now 5-5 in the Glass Bowl. • The Rockets finished with a season-high 446 yards in total offense (249 rushing, 197 passing) vs. the Cardinals. It was the first time this season that the Rockets topped the 200-yard rushing mark. • Junior RB Adonis Thomas carried the ball 19 times for a career-high 130 yards and one touchdown. • Sophomore WR Eric Page finished with seven receptions for 110 yards, topping the century mark for the fourth-consecutive game. ROCKETS OVERCOME 17-0 DEFI-CIT TO BEAT BALL STATE For the second straight week the Rockets rallied from behind to win, this time coming back from a 17-point deficit to defeat Ball State, 31-24, at the Glass Bowl on Oct. 23. Down 17-0, the Rockets rolled up 31 consecutive points before the Cardinals scored with 12 seconds left to pull within a touchdown. BSU then recovered an onside kick on its own 45-yard line but an interception by senior cornerback Desmond Marrow on the UT six-yard line sealed the victory. A week ago, Toledo trailed Kent State at halftime, 21-7, before coming back to win 34-21. Junior Adonis Thomas rushed for a career-high 130 yards and one touchdown, leading the UT offense to a season-best 249 yards on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Austin Dantin recovered from two early interceptions, completing 14-of-18 yards for 197 yards and one TD. Dantin also rushed for 58 yards and two scores.

ALEX JOHNSON RETURNS TO LINEUP VS. BALL STATE Senior defensive end Alex Johnson, who had been out of the lineup since

ON TOP OF THE MAC WEST After four Mid-American Confer-ence games, Toledo is undefeated in league play and tied for first in the MAC West Division with Northern Illinois at 4-0. Toledo travels to DeKalb on Nov. 9 in a Tuesday night game on ESPN2.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES Eastern Michigan snapped an 18-game losing streak with a 41-38 win over Ball State on Oct. 16. That streak included an 0-12 record in 2009 and the first six games this year. The Eagles are fifth in the MAC in rushing (161.6) and eighth in passing (172.2). Sophomore QB Alex Gillett has thrown for 1,146 yards and 10 touchdowns, and also run for a team-best 462 yards and four TDs.

TOLEDO-EMU SERIES Toledo leads the series, 26-11. To-ledo has won nine of the last 10 meetings and holds an 11-7 record in Ypsilanti.

LAST YEAR Toledo won at the Glass Bowl, 47-21, in a game that was never in doubt. Morgan Williams rushed for 155 yards and DaJuane Collins added 143. Austin Dantin, starting for an injured Aaron Opelt, completed 11-of-12 passes for 121 yards.

WHERE THEY RANK Toledo is second in the nation with 24 turnovers forced, tied for second in the country with 14 interceptions, and tied for 12th in turnover margin (+1.0). Senior LB Archie Donald is tied for second in the MAC and tied for 15th in the country with 10.4 tackles per game. Sophomore WR Eric Page is sev-enth in the nation with 7.6 receptions per game and 20th with 86.2 receiving yards. As a team, the Rockets rank sixth in total defense in the MAC (360.6) and eighth in total offense (318.0).

suffering a facial fracture in the Western Michigan game on Sept. 18, returned to the UT lineup vs. Ball State on Oct. 23. Johnson had three tackles, forced one fumble and was credited with one QB hurry vs. the Cardinals.

ISAIAH BALLARD NAMED MAC WEST SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior Isaiah Ballard was named MAC West Division Special Teams Player of the Week for his kick return performance in a 31-24 win over Ball State on Oct. 23. Ballard returned three kicks for 103 yards, but the key return was a 56-yarder to start the second half that led to Toledo’s go-ahead touchdown.

ERIC PAGE DOES IT ALL Sophomore Eric Page is on the “Watch List” for the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player, and it’s no wonder. Page, who stands just 5-10, 180 pounds, leads the Rockets and is seventh in the country and second in the MAC with 61 receptions, and fourth in the MAC and 20th in the nation with 580 re-ceiving yards. He would rank second in

the MAC in kickoff returns (26.3 avg.) but is one attempt shy of qualifying. He also returns punts for the Rockets and can throw the ball if needed. A quar-terback in high school, Page is 1-for-2 passing on gadget plays in his career. Page has also gone over the 100-yard receiving mark in four consecutive games. Page is also on the “Watch List” for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given annu-ally to the nation’s top receiver. Page led the nation’s freshman with 82 receptions and 1,159 yards in 2009.

PAGE MOVES UP UT CAREER LISTS Even though he is just a sophomore, Eric Page is already moving up the UT career receiving lists. Page is in ninth place in school history with 143 career receptions and 10th in receiving yards with 1,849.

AUSTIN DANTIN HAS A CAREER GAME IN WIN OVER KENT STATE Just one week removed from a loss at Boise State in which he was carried off the field with a concussion, sopho-more quarterback Austin Dantin led the Toledo Rockets to a dramatic 34-21 comeback victory over Kent State in a crucial MAC contest at the Glass Bowl on Oct. 16. Trailing 21-7 at halftime, Dantin rallied Toledo to 27 unanswered points in the second half. He finished with career highs in completions (30) and attempts (47) for 229 yards and one TD. The Tallahassee, FL native also car-ried the ball a team-high 14 times for a career-best 72 yards, including a 40-yard scamper.

T.J. FATINIKUN FOURTH MAC WEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Sophomore defensive end T.J. Fatinikun was named MAC West De-fensive Player of the Week for his per-formance in a 34-21 win over Kent State

on Oct. 16. Fatinikun had five tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a key 10-yard sack with UT holding a 24-21 lead late in the game. Fatinikun is the fourth Rocket de-fender to win player of the week honors this year. The others were Dan Molls (Sept. 11), Desmond Marrow (Sept. 18) and Archie Donald (Sept. 25).

WELCOME BACK, DES It’s been a long road back for Des-mond Marrow. Marrow, a senior cornerback, has missed more than half of his career due to injuries. He finally returned to the starting lineup in the season opener vs. Arizona on Sept. 3, and has established himself as one of the team’s top defenders. Marrow missed the entire 2007 season with a hamstring in-jury. In 2008 he missed five games due a season-ending knee injury. He also had to come out of another game after suffering a concussion after colliding with the cannon in the south end zone of the Glass Bowl (the cannon has since been moved to the east tower atop the visiting locker room). Marrow missed the entire 2009 season as he recovered from off-season knee surgery.

ARCHIE DONALD GOING FOR THREE STRAIGHT Senior LB Archie Donald will try this season to become the first Rocket in history to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. Donald, a third-team All-MAC pick in 2009, led the Rock-ets in tackles with 119 in 2008 and 116 last year. He leads the team with 83 tackles this season.

YOUTH SERVED IN TOLEDO LINEUP Of the 44 players listed in the Rock-ets’ offensive and defensive two-deeps, 18 are either freshmen or sophomore. Eight true freshmen have already seen game action this season: DE Jayrone Elliott, RB David Fluellen, WR James Green, DL Elijah Jones, FS Ross Madi-son, DB Charles Rancifer, PK Andrew Elchert and WR Bernard Reedy.

ROCKETS WIN THREE STRAIGHT ROAD GAMES FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1995 Toledo’s victory over Purdue on Sept. 25 gave the Rockets their third straight road win for the first time since 2002. The Rockets beat Central Florida, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois in consecutive road contests that year, though not in con-secutive weeks. The last time Toledo won three road games in as many weeks was 1995 when an 11-0-1 Rocket team beat WMU, Nevada and Cincinnati on the road in consecutive weeks. The 1971 and 1967 Toledo teams also won three road games in consecutive weeks. All three of these UT teams won MAC

championships in those years. The 2002 team won a MAC West title.

BEATING THE BIG BOYS The Purdue win also marked the fifth-straight season the Rockets have defeated a school from a BCS automatic qualifying conference, which ranks tied with Brigham Young for the third-longest streak. ROCKETS SET SEA-SON TICKET MARK UT announced prior to the Arizona game that it had passed the 11,000-mark for season tickets, breaking the all-time record of 10,851 set in 2004 and shattering last year’s total of 7,429. The official season-ticket mark stands at 11,007.

ROCKETS’ EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM The Rockets continue their good work in the classroom. Their combined team GPA was 2.846 last spring, their third consecutive semester above a 2.8. The Rockets’ academic proficiency has improved dramatically since the arrival of head coach Tim Beckman. In Beckman’s first semester as head coach, the Rockets’ raised their team GPA from 2.370 in fall of 2008 to 2.922 in the spring of 2009. Also, the team’s Academic Prog-ress Rate (APR) rose to a 934 this past year, the highest in the program’s histo-ry and the first time above the NCAA’s “cut point” of 925.

ROCKETS MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE TOLEDO COMMUNITY Coach Tim Beckman and his staff believe it is important for young men to give something back to their communi-ty. That’s why every Friday afternoon in February, members of the football team go out into the Toledo community and volunteer their time. “I think it’s important for our play-ers to get out in the community and give of themselves a little bit,” said Beck-man. “It’s been an awesome experience for them.” The following is a sample of some of Rockets’ volunteer projects: • Give a Kid a Smile Day (dental health awareness for children) • Toledo Children’s Hospital visits.

• Lincoln Academy After School Program. • Elementary School visits. • Bowling fundraiser for Haiti earthquake relief.

NEW VIDEOBOARD IN THE GLASS BOWL A new video board graces the Glass Bowl this season. The new video board is 25’ wide x 14’ tall, five feet wider than the original board. Rocket fans will be

able to enjoy live-action coverage, replays, high-lights and other special video features. The new video board will be able to show video in wide-screen format and will have improved defini-tion (20 mm pixilation). The viewing angle will be improved to 160 de-grees. The new video board

will also feature a rear message board display that will be visible from outside the Glass Bowl. The rear-display board, which is 25’ wide x 7’ tall, will allow the UT Athletic Department to promote upcoming events, give team updates and show video highlights.

ROCKETS INK HOME-AND-HOME SERIES WITH MIAMI HURRICANES The University of Toledo will play the University of Miami in a home-and-home football series beginning in 2015. The Rockets will host the Hurricanes on Sept. 5, 2015 and travel to Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL on Sept. 3, 2016. The Rockets and the Hurricanes have played once before, a 24-14 home-field victory for Miami on Nov. 21, 1987. Miami was ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time in both the AP and UPI polls, and went on to win the national championship that season thanks to a 20-14 win over then-No. 1 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. The Miami game is the latest ad-dition to a challenging and exciting Rocket non-conference home schedule in upcoming years. In future years Boise State (2011), Navy (2013), Missouri (2014) and Iowa State (2015) will all visit the Glass Bowl. Previously, the Rockets have hosted schools such as Colorado, Purdue, Minnesota, Kansas, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Navy, Syracuse, Fresno State and Indiana.

Football is not a way of life for Tim Beckman. It is his life. Practically since the day he was born, Beckman has either been playing or coaching football. As the son of a football coach, Beckman received an early education in all aspects of the sport. He never seriously considered anything other than coaching as his chosen profession. Beckman, 45, likes to say he has 45 years of coaching experience. It’s an exaggeration, but not by much. His father, Dave Beckman, coached on the high school, collegiate and professional levels for years. As a result, Beckman was exposed to some of the best coaches in the country on all levels. “I’ve been around football and football coaches all my life,” said Beckman. “I was born with a football. My dad coached high school ball and up to college ball and the pros, so I’ve had a chance to see it all.” Beckman played college football at the University of Findlay under Dick Strahm, then began his climb up the coaching ladder with a graduate assistant’s position under Pat Dye at Auburn in 1988. Most recently, Beckman served for two years as the defensive coordinator under

Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State. Along the way, he also worked with Urban Meyer at Bowling Green and Jim Tressel at Ohio State. “I’m blessed that I’ve been able to learn from coaches like these,” said Beckman. “I just love football. I love being around it. It’s an important part of my life.”

Beckman Becomes a Rocket Beckman became the 25th head football coach in UT history in December of 2008 and immediately began transforming the program. He instilled a new enthusiasm and intensity that inspired players and Rocket fans alike. The Rockets improved by two wins and in most important statistical categories over the previous season. But more importantly, Beckman laid a solid foundation that puts Toledo in the position to be a dominant program in the Mid-American Conference for years to come. Beckman’s first task as head coach was to simultaneously assemble a coaching staff and a recruiting class. Within days of his hire, he had a core of coaches together and out on the road in an all-out effort to sign a top-notch group of recruits. Starting with just two

Tim Beckman has been coaching college football for 22 years. As a coach’s son, he’s had a close-up view of the game for twice as long. Says Beckman, “I was born with a football.”

verbal commitments from the fall, Beckman and his staff added 16 more recruits to give the Rockets a very respectable recruiting class of 18 signees. In addition to seven players from Ohio, the Rocket staff used their wide-spread connections to nab recruits from eight other states, including seven players from six southern states. Beckman’s other challenge was to begin to change the attitude and habits of the current Rockets. He started by instilling firm expectations for his players, whether in off-season training, in the class room or in the community. For example, Beckman requires his players to sit in the first two rows in their classes. He also requires players to make personal contact with each of their instructors outside of the class room at least once at the beginning of the semester. Beckman also began a program of community service in which the Rockets are involved in volunteer activities on Fridays during the off-season. As part of his plan to increase competitiveness and team-building, Beckman broke his squad up into eight “teams,” making them compete in everything during the off-season—in the weight room, in the classroom, during drills, even during fun social activities. The first-place team was rewarded each week, while the eighth-place team had to run drills at 4:00 a.m. “It’s constant competition,” said Beckman said of his off-season philosophy. “Peer pressure comes into play. Players aren’t happy if they lose because their teammate was late for class.” Beckman’s efforts to change the mentality of the program paid immediate dividends in the class room. In his first semester overseeing the program, the team’s combined semester GPA rose from 2.370 to 2.922, an average increase of more than half a grade per player. Also, the team’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) rose to a 934, the highest in the program’s history and the first time above the NCAA’s “cut point” of 925.

2009: Laying the Foundation for the Future Beckman’s first season as head coach saw the Rockets improve by two wins and decisively defeat a Big 12 school. More importantly, perhaps, was the unquestionable feeling among the team and its fans that the Rockets were back on the path to success.

Despite losing four-year starting quarterback Aaron Opelt to injury midway through the season, the Rockets improved from three wins in 2008 to five wins in 2009, the third-best improvement in the MAC. Toledo’s biggest victory was a nationally televised 54-38 win over Colorado in the Glass Bowl. The Rockets also defeated defending MAC champion Ball State, as well as Northern Illinois, a team that earned a berth in the International Bowl. The foundation for Toledo’s future was further solidified by two developments. First, on Signing Day in February, both Rivals.com and Scout.com ranked

Beckman is known for his passion for the game and his compet-itive nature. “We will compete in everything we do,” he said.

Beckman asked his team to volunteer their time to community service every Friday in February. “I think it’s important for our players to get out in the com-munity and give of themselves a little bit,” he said. “It’s been an awesome experience for them.”

Toledo’s 2010 recruiting class as No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference. Just three days later, the Fetterman Training Center officially opened, giving the Rockets one of the finest indoor facilities in the country. “When you walk in here the first thing you have to say is, ‘Wow.’ I’ve seen a lot of indoor facilities in my life, but this is one of the best,” said Beckman. “When we bring our recruits into this building, it tells them that this University is committed to our athletic programs, and has a vision for excellence.”

21 Years of Experience as an Assistant Before becoming U T ’s h e a d c o a c h , Beckman had 21 years of experience as an assistant coach, mostly with winning teams. He has been a part of teams that made the top 25 in each of his final seven seasons as an assistant. Beckman served as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State (2007-08); the cornerbacks coach at Ohio State (2005-06); the defensive coordinator/assistant head coach at Bowling Green (1998-2004); the defensive coordinator at Elon (1996-97); the secondary coach/recruiting coordinator at Western Carolina (1990-95); and as a graduate assistant at Auburn (1988-89). Beckman’s two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State were highly successful considering the ultra-competitive nature of the Big 12. During Beckman’s time in Stillwater, the Cowboys posted a 16-10 record, including a 9-4 mark in 2008. Oklahoma State ranked as high as No. 6 in the BCS rankings and No. 7 in the AP poll last season, with three of its losses coming to teams that were ranked in the top three in the country when they faced OSU (#1 Texas, #2 Texas Tech

and #3 Oklahoma). In four of the Cowboys’ victories, Beckman’s defense held opponents to 14 points or fewer. In 2007, the Cowboys went 7-6, including a 49-33 win over Indiana in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, AZ. At Ohio State, Beckman mentored the Buckeye cornerbacks. In 2006, Ohio State ended the year No. 12 nationally in total defense, allowing just 280.5

yards per game. The Buckeyes were fifth in the country in scoring defense, yielding only 12.8 points per game, and Antonio Smith was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back. In 2005, Beckman helped coach an Ohio State defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation against the run and fifth in total defense. The Buckeyes finished fourth in both major polls. During his stay at Ohio State, the Buckeyes were 22-3 with appearances in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl and the 2007 BCS Championship game. Along the way he

coached six All-Big Ten defensive backs. His final game as a coach with Ohio State was the 2007 BCS National Championship Game vs. Florida, where Beckman faced his former boss from his days at Bowling Green, Urban Meyer. At Bowling Green, Beckman was a three-time nominee for the Frank Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation’s top assistant coach. He was a finalist in 2001 when the Falcons led the Mid-American Conference in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, turnovers gained and scoring margin. The College Football News named him one of the country’s top defensive coordinators. During his stay at Bowling Green, the Falcons won two bowl games, a MAC division title and finished ranked in the national polls three times.
