Lots of warm fall days to still enjoy the outdoors. It was a little colder for Thanksgiving, but I hope everyone was able to be with friends and family and enjoyed the day. I, for one, have a lot to be thankful for this year with our guild. We had five great afternoon programs, two fun semi- nars and one workshop which total many opportuni- ties for getting together and sharing our love for painting and art. Thank you to the Board and every- one who holds a position for all your hard work, making our programs a success. Without the Board’s and members’ willingness to step in and do whatever needed to be done, we would not have had all these programs. A special thank you to Carol Howard. You did a super job getting it all organized and are a delight to work with. Thank you also for the afternoon programs, lunches and hosting all the board meetings this year, and oh yes, thank you for all the times you stepped in for me when I was una- vailable. I could not have done my job this year if it wasn’t for all the help from the Board, all the presi- dential appointees, and all our members. I would like to extend a very special thanks to Donna Frost for volunteering to be 2017 Vice President/ President Elect. She will need everyone’s help and support. In 2017 we shall need someone else to step up and become Donna’s VP. Please start thinking now, about how we can help our members see that this is a doable position, and with each person’s help, we can make that job easier. We need you!! Thank you to everyone who taught at our afternoon programs. Your efforts made this year’s programs very special. January: Cindy Harrison and Nancy Schlis did a great job making beautiful 3D Snowmen on canvas blocks, a relaxing and fun afternoon. I did have a question about how much “Sugar” made it to our projects verses our laps. Thank you both. March: Thank you Sue Mangano for teaching a pro- gram on painting a silk scarf. She did a great job of breaking the project down into steps so we could all finish, have fun, and learned a new technique with silk dye. Sue is an excellent teacher, and we all en- joyed her project resulting in a beautiful scarf to wear. May: Thank you, Chris Watson, for visiting and painting with us at our chapter. Her bird and flower bag on canvas was a fun and relaxing project giving us a chance to work with fabric paints. September: Thank you Leeanne Kelly, Kris Lafa- yette and Melanie Knox for teaching 3 projects in 4 hours. They all did a superlative job. It was great recycling old spoons into new ornaments with Leeanne. Kris made it fun to turn an extra-large clothes pin into a Christmas decoration, and thank you, Melanie, for teaching a fun Santa ornament on one of our brown bag donations. November: Thanks Julie Talarski for showing us the way to use our crayons to create Art. We never knew we could do so much with a box of crayons. As the New Year starts, please think about which friend you would like to introduce to our painting world! We have fun and relaxing programs. We need to share these opportunities to grow as a guild. It has been my delight to work with all of you. The 2017 painting year will be fabulous!! See you at the meetings. The afternoon project for the January 8, 2017

    meeting is

    Memory Boxes

    Carol’s Curriculum

Happy New Year everyone! Hope your holidays were joy filled!

Thank you, painting family, for your support in 2016 and looking forward to continuing the enthusiasm in 2017.

We begin the New Year with a recognition of "paying it forward" by sharing memories at our Janu-ary meeting. Our afternoon program will be painting Memory Boxes to comfort families at local hospitals who have tragically lost a baby The room will be divided so that Dotty Pullo and I, Carol Howard, will be teaching different designs simultaneously to a di-vided room. There is no better way to begin a new year than to spread some joy.

And we will also share in the fun of MEMORY LANE painted pieces. So please bring a piece that is especially dear to you or an early and a recent one to demonstrate your journey. The best fun is the sharing of our personal painting history and this is a wonder-ful opportunity to laugh and cry. And all the board members will be preparing lunch for your enjoy-ment.

March blows in thoughts of Spring. Under the guid-ance of Shirley Cochis we will be painting 3D can-

vas bunnies to celebrate Easter. When Shirley paint-ed them for meeting centerpieces, everyone wanted to paint them.

May, we will be continue the fun when Suzi Franklin teaches us a colored pencil project that she presently is working on. There's always excitement in anticipa-tion.

And speaking of surprises, in September, watch for the mixed media mystery piece that Cindy Harrison and Nancy Schlis will create together to bring smiles to our faces.

November we will be learning water color notecards taught by Leeanne Kelly. These are wonderful de-signs that will usher in the joy of the holiday season. Mark your calendars as it will be a fun year!! - Carol Howard, Vice President/President-Elect

WMDPG General Meeting Minutes - Sunday, November 13, 2016

President Dotty Pullo greeted the members and the meeting was called to order at 10 AM. Pledge of allegiance. There were no new members. Julie Talarski, artist, was a guest for the meeting. Tole Gate: L. Kelly Membership: S. Hodgkins. 29 present with 15 members for the afternoon program. Secretary: M. Moses. The report for the last general meeting was included in the newsletter. The motion to accept the minutes as printed was made by L. Provencher and seconded by N. Schlis. It was passed without discussion and will be filed as published. Treasurer: C. Beers Witherell. A discussion was held on the proposed budget for 2017. The treasurer’s report was accepted as print-ed and was passed with no further discussion. Newsletter: D. Frost. The deadline for the next newsletter is December 2. Members are encouraged to send in informative articles on decorative painting, photographs, and recipes for favorite foods. Memory Boxes: J. Seastedt and M. Moses. The new boxes will be arriving in time for the January meeting to be used for the after-noon program and to distribute to members to paint at home during the year. S. Day was complimented on the beautiful lining in the painted box she brought in today. Palette Potpourri: L. Kelly. Several NET pieces and others were brought in for all to admire. Janice Tomlin was the winner. Centerpieces: K. Lafayette. Thanks were given for the Angel Wings and candles she displayed which were reminders of all the friends and family members lost during the year. Bag raffle: S. Mangano. Many bags of surfaces, patterns and painting books, plus 2 paint storage units were brought in for the raffle. $100. was made from the raffle. Old business: D. Pullo spoke about the lack of participation for the workshops and encouraged members to attend as many as possible in the future. No definite workshops were planned at this time. Vice President: C. Howard. A seminar is being planned for Lynne Andrews to teach in March, 2017. Lynne will be planning 2, 1 day projects for the guild. Further information will follow. A discussion was held on possible future seminars, including teachers and mediums. Member participation is strongly encouraged as to the type of seminars they would enjoy and attend. D. Pullo discussed the elections for the guild. The responsibilities of the Vice President were dissected, in order to have more mem-bers volunteer for the position. Included in the responsibilities are the venue, lunches, and afternoon programs. The possibility of sharing these jobs in order to lessen the work is a sensible way to do this. A lively discussion was held on being a member of the board. Several members spoke of how positive they felt when being on the board. In the future the dates and place for the board meeting will be included in the newsletter. Please contact a guild officer if you are not able to attend a meeting. New business: The date of the next meeting will be Sunday, January 8. The installation of the officers will be held. Members are asked to bring a first or very early painting, ink, or colored pencil project, and one recent one to show how everyone has improved in their skill. After lunch, members will be painting memory boxes for the maternity ward of local hospitals. D. Pullo and C. Howard will be designing patterns, and boxes will be ready to paint. Boxes can also be brought from home, and members can also paint their own pattern if desired. C. Howard: Additional afternoon programs for 2017 include an adorable canvas bunny by Shirley Cochis in March, a colored pencil project by S. Franklin in May, a surprise piece for September by C. Harrison and N. Schlis, and watercolor cards by L. Kelly in No-vember. L. Provencher, NET news: The wrap up meeting was held October 29. In planning for 2017, a change has been made to have the convention under 1 roof which will help with costs, and ease of attending the trade show. The new 101 classes were popular. They provided an introduction to painting without having to bring a surface and much equipment. There were 26 first timers participating in various classes. Guild members are strongly encouraged to volunteer before and at the convention as it is a large amount of work for few people. Cheryl Barb is in charge of the volunteers for 2017 NET and will definitely need assistance. The continuation of the convention will depend on many volunteers! C. Harrison spoke about 2016 NET also. There was a $504. loss this year which accounted for no dividends for the guilds. She too,

  • ______________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ Tole It To The Mountains Volume 33, Issue 5 page 6

stressed participation and volunteerism by guild members being essential if we wish to keep the wonderful NET convention! L. Provencher: The guild raffle has several beautiful pieces donated this year. Please buy raffle tickets and encourage friends and family to do so also. The Secret Pal program has been enjoyed by all those who participated. Sign up will be at the January meeting. Join in the fun of guessing your secret pal and opening your special gifts at the 4 meetings! Officers for 2017: President, Carol Howard; Vice President, Donna Frost; Treasurer, Carol Beers-Witherell; Secretary, Marilyn Moses; Newsletter, Sue Hodgkins; Membership, Jacque Seastedt. Board Members: Linda Conners, Larry Provencher, Margie Rowe, and Peggy Daly. A thank you was given to Julie Talarski for teaching the beautiful colored pencil project on Nov. 12, and the crayon project for the afternoon program. Members were surprised at how a 24 box of Crayola crayons could produce such a nice result! A motion to adjourn was made by J. Seastedt and seconded by C. Harrison. Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Moses, WMDPG Secretary

    2017 Workshops Let’s Paint more

Hello, members and painting friends. In 2015 and 2016 our workshops have been running in the red. We would like to continue workshop but we would like to run them without losing money. We are asking our members who teach and have an in-home studio to submit projects they would like to teach for our work-shops. Please bring your projects to the Janu-ary meeting. We can then vote on the project we would like to paint at our next work-shop. The teacher’s fee would be the same, $225, but we would not have to pay the hotel $250 for the rental of the room. The work-shops would be limited to the number of stu-dents the teacher has room for. We are in-creasing the workshop fee in 2017 to $35. This way we can run workshops with fewer students and still break even. If you have a project you would like to teach but do not have a studio, think about partnering with a member that could host your workshop. We hope to run two workshops in 2017; the dates will be announced at the January meeting. If this works we can run more in 2018. Happy Painting Dotty Pullo Workshop chair

A Note About Insurance Coverage: Would you like to host a Chapter workshop in your home? Each year, as part of our benefits of being a Chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters, we are able to buy insurance at a very reasonable cost. The details are explained on the SDP website (decorativepainters.org - click on Chapters, then click on forms.). If the chapter event is for fewer than 500 people and doesn’t run longer than five days, we have insurance coverage.

If you did not pay your SDP dues by December 31, your membership year will change to your Anni-versary Date. Anniversary Membership FAQ from SDP In 2017, we are amending our membership from a calendar year membership cycle (January through December) to an anniversary date membership cycle (one year from your official join date). Read our Anniversary Membership FAQ to get answers to all the questions you may have regarding this change. Your subscription to the Decorative Painter will coincide with your Anniversary membership so if you do not join until after the beginning of the year, your first issue will be the Spring (published in March), then Summer, Fall, and Winter (published in the following year). The Calendar Year Mem-bership for those who join or renew in December starts with the Winter Issue. The change to Anniversary Membership benefits members who join during the year. They will re-ceive new issues of the Decorative Painter instead of back issues plus new issues. This will also help chapters who might have new members who in the past might not have wanted to join late in the year. Thee will no longer be any late in the year. If a person joins by September 15th, their An-niversary date is September, their membership starts immediately and their first issue of the Deco-rative Painter will be the Fall issue published in November. If you have any questions, please contact Tanya Horn, our Membership & Chapters Coordinator, at [email protected] or (316) 269-9300 ext. 105. New Policy—for Missed Events Project Pieces

If an individual paid for a class and is unable to attend, arrangements must be made to obtain the materials within 2 months or by the next General Meeting. Otherwise, the class project will revert back to the Guild with no refund.

    Centerpiece Help Needed

Kris Lafayette has agreed to continue as Centerpiece Chair and will do the table centerpieces for January 2017. This is a fun job but she would like help. She has lots of stuff in her craft/junk room so there will be no problem with materials. It is a fun and lovely tradition, besides the candy is always good! Please think about volunteering to do the centerpieces for one meeting. Get a couple of friends together to paint. You can count on Kris for all the help you need. Thanks to Kris and everyone who helped make cen-terpieces in 2016!

Clean, clean, clean your unwanted treasures and bring them to our White Mountain Guild meetings to raffle off! The 2016 NET wrap up meeting was held on October 29th. The major news for 2017 NET is that it

will be held under ONE roof. The Trade Show will be moved to the Salons (in the Hotel). What does this mean for us? We will be able to go shopping during our class breaks/lunches/dinners. YAY! We will not have to walk down to the Trade Center in the cold and/or wet weather. YAY! The draw back maybe we are offered less classes as they are going to be utilizing the Salons for the Show. As a few teachers had cancelled classes over the past years, we never used ALL the rooms that NET was paying for. So in actuality, we are not losing anything. We are gaining all the way! One thing we must not forget, this event is only able to continue by the sheer will of the Volunteers. Without the Chapter members, NET could not (will not) be able to offer such a wonderful variety of painting opportunities and vendors who bring their original artwork, surfaces and patterns for you to buy. Our (WMDPG) job for 2017 is the Monitor/Volunteer Station. Cheryl Barb has graciously accepted the responsibility for this position. She will be needing the help of EVERYONE who plans on attend-ing the convention. The job entails cleaning every room after a class, making sure the tables are wiped down and the garbage bags are replaced. If YOU are TAKING a class, maybe think about cleaning up YOUR room before you leave it. If we all did this, it would make Cheryl’s job a lot easier. Lastly, congratulations to Larry Provencher for putting in the most volunteer hours (30 +) and being awarded a 4-hour class for free next year. For more information on the NET wrap up meeting, see the General Meeting Minutes. Happy Holidays, Stay safe & warm - - Hugs, Cindy Harrison
