Over the years the Tolbooth has developed a whole host of exciting projects, working locally and nationally with various organisations to place Stirling at the centre of the cultural life of Scotland.

Two new projects I would like to highlight…

Firstly, Shifting Currents, which was commissioned by and premiered at this year’s Le Weekend festival, will now be performed at the sound festival, Aberdeen, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, probably the most important contemporary music festival in Europe and the November Music festival in Holland.

The second project is part of the Tolbooth’s creative hub. We are working with Serious Music of London to deliver the Time Out project. Five of Scotland’s top Jazz musicians will be working at the Tolbooth with world class tutors like John Surman and Joanna McGregor to develop and expand their skills across all aspects of music making.

The Tolbooth is absolutely delighted to be able to champion this calibre of work in Stirling and the wonderful Autumn programme that I hope you enjoy.

Bleed From Within formed in Glasgow, 2005. Constant gigs over the past 3 years, and a self produced debut EP, have seen them gather a following of dedicated fans, who have showed endless support since the start of this journey. Their tight and cutting live set have gone down incredibly well on various Tours throughout the UK and Europe.

The band’s debut album, “Humanity”, released in the Summer of 2009 has captured the bands ideals perfectly. The longplayer, which was received well by the media combines power and brutality with groove and finesse.

JAMES BLACKSHAWSAT 10 OCT, 8PM£12/£10

ver the years the Tolbooth has brought to Stirling a whole host of guitarist playing a gamut of

musical styles.

James Blackshaw continues our exploration of guitar music and brings his mesmerising and hypnotic 12 string sound to the Tolbooth for the first time.

Initially inspired by the guitarists of the 60’s Takoma label to teach himself fingerpicking, James Blackshaw writes long-form pieces primarily for solo 12-string guitar and piano that are heavily influenced by minimalist composers and European classical music and which use drones, overtones and repeating patterns alongside a strong inclination for melody to create instrumental music that is both intelligent, hypnotic and emotionally charged.

He is influenced as much by Indian ragas as the blues but his music dips into a panoply of sound from English folk melodies to Greek Rembetika music.

CROOKED STILLWED 14 OCT, 8PM£12/£10

We welcome the Crooked Still medicine show to Tolbooth for the first time.

Crooked Still is an ensemble effort of inspired music making that moves the band’s impossible to pigeon hole style in new directions while honouring their folk roots.

Like so many of the new bands coming through the American roots tradition Crooked Still blur the boundaries of many of the styles from improvised old time music, bluegrass, folk to plain old country.

As they say themselves, Crooked Still is still fermenting but so far the brew is an intoxicating blend of good time music.

Long Gone Lonesome tells the story of Thomas Fraser, the Shetlander with two lives. By day fisherman, father

and islandman, by night world class blues recording artist. Thomas was dedicated to his art, mastering the styles of his heroes and making their songs his own.

Using his hard earned money from the sea, he bought the first Grundig reel to reel, creating ground-breaking self made multi-tracked recordings which he gave to close friends as gifts. His modesty stopped them travelling any further.

Thomas died in 1978, following an accident at sea and his tapes were more or less forgotten for a quarter of a century until his grandson realised their importance and started the slow process of restoring them.

The first modest CD release ignited a blaze of interest in Thomas and his music. Three more CDs have followed as well as a festival in his honour, plaudits from critics and scholars around the world, a documentary...and now this musical telling of his story.

Awarm welcome back to the undisputed King of Swing and the Biscuit Boys as they get ready to

raise the roof at Tolbooth.

With their trademark electric blue suits and all action stage show, King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys are a formidable jump-jive, swing and blues machine.

Their crazy on stage antics and musical humour bring the authentic sound of 1940’s Kansas City Jazz and Blues to life, making an evening with the King and the Boys a real pleasure.

As one New York magazine put it: ‘Those who say that swing is a musical form best left to Americans, prepare to be proven wrong. This British combo is bullet proof!’

Who would have thought that what began as a project for the Highland Festival, 10 years ago, would continue as one of Scotland’s top traditional bands?

From remote village halls to the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, Blazin’ Fiddles has delighted audiences with their highlands and islands tunes and tales. In the past decade no other band has quite captured the excitement, passion and the sensitivity of Scottish music.

During a performance, the audience has a

rare opportunity to hear pieces featuring the regional styles of each fiddler followed by all hands jumping in for a wonderful explosion of music. Fiddles and bows blaze away with guitar and piano for one of the most exciting and memorable fiddle ensembles ever to take the stage.

ackie Leven’s errant life in music began at an early age, coming home from school to hear the sound of his

mother’s Lightnin’ Hopkins records beating out time on the walls of his Fife home.

From then till now Jackie’s life has been the life of a modern day troubadour.

From his early days of living in squats and busking on the South Bank in London, to folk clubs and his daunting rock band Doll By Doll, Jackie’s songs have been coloured by his roving life.

A brush with death in the mid eighties, drugs and his subsequent recovery led

JJackie on a long road back to Scotland and to writing and performing music.

He has been incredibly prolific since launching his solo career in 1994, releasing 16 official albums including one with crime writer Ian Rankin and 8 through his fan club.

Jackie’s songs delve deeply into the essence of human survival and speak out with a passion for the wonderment of the muse of song.

Fred Morrison’s ferociously eclectic piping style rampages majestically from the great piping traditions to the

improvised worlds of blues & Jazz notching up some references to Indian ragas and eastern European polyphonics.

His astounding technique on highland, uilleann and reel pipes has won him rapturous critical acclaim, including Instrumentalist of the Year 2004 at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

While he still regards the Highland pipe as his first instrument, these days his concert performances tend to focus round the Border pipes, with interludes on uilleann pipes and a mellifluous whistle.

It is always with great excitement that we invite Fred back to perform at the Tolbooth. Come prepared to be blown away by some outrageous piping.

earning ballads of love, loss and revenge nestle next to tales of murder and untimely death.

In Blueflint’s songs is an unflinching retelling of the human condition, lightened by exquisite harmony singing and the deft beauty shaped by their instrumental work.

Steeped in Americana, the group’s music is part bluegrass, part folk. Based around the banjo duo of Deborah Arnott and Clare-Louise Neilson, Blueflint subtly intertwines the three-finger picking and clawhammer styles of banjo traditions to accompany striking vocals and harmonies on a set of original songs.

Blueflint’s unique sound is enhanced by the contribution from an excellent line-up of talented and versatile musicians including Roddy Neilson, fiddle and Hugh Kelly, double bass.

Malinky are back at Tolbooth with a newly revamped line-up, underscoring their reputation

as one of Scotland’s most distinctive and accomplished folk bands.

While retaining their hallmark song-based repertoire, performed by three superb lead vocalists and arrayed with tastefully inventive instrumentation, Malinky today unite seasoned maturity with sparkling freshness, casting their musical net wider than ever.

Formed in Edinburgh in 1998, Malinky showed their mettle early on by winning a prestigious Danny Kyle Open Stage Award

at the following year’s Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. Ten years on, the two remaining members from that founding line-up – Steve Byrne (vocals/bouzouki/guitar) and Mark Dunlop (vocals/ whistles/bodhrán) – are now joined by Fiona Hunter (vocals/cello), who replaced original lead singer Karine Polwart in 2005, alongside recent recruits Dave Wood (guitar/bouzouki) and Mike Vass (fiddle).

With Dunlop hailing from over the water in Antrim, and Wood from Derbyshire, their respective roots in Ulster song and English tradition add further vibrant layers to Malinky’s core Scottish sound.

This young quartet are picking up plaudits from all over the music and jazz world. Their combination of a hard swinging post-bop style and a distinctly contemporary feel is quite remarkable and is being noticed both sides of the Atlantic.

Their debut album was voted both Jazzwise and Mojo magazine’s jazz album of the year. They have already performed at the iconic Newport Jazz Festival as well many other festivals around the world.

Expertly incorporating elements of classical, African and Cuban musical forms into their

Eoriginal, sophisticated, fresh-sounding jazz, Empirical make a point of not being centred around a specific front line or leader; it is very much a complete band, each member contributing equally, adding their own facets to the overall sound.

the North Lanarkshire mining community of Bridgend killed 47 miners in the worst Scottish mining accident of the 20th century.

This very special event commemorates the 50th anniversary of that tragedy and begins with a screening of three, rarely seen, short films documenting Britain’s reliance on coal and the men who mined it between the 1930’s and 1950’s.

Two of the films, all courtesy of the British Film Institute, were produced by Stirling’s pioneering film maker John Greirson and describe the brutal conditions endured by the miners.

Since his early days with the influential Glasgow bands Friends Again and Love and Money, James has received widespread recognition as a performer and songwriter.

With comparisons to the writing style of Leonard Cohen and the vocal style of Scott Walker he has written extensively for Karen Matheson and continues to work in her band and has recorded five critically acclaimed solo albums.

Working with musician and producer Donald Shaw and a stellar cast of players he delivered the stunning debut solo album Sawdust In My Veins, followed by the equally acclaimed follow-ups My Thrawn Glory, I Shot The Albatross, Holy Love and the recently released Strange Flowers.

he Nigel Williams theatrical adaptation of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’ – the boys’

adventure story with a deeply unsettling edge – gets an interesting spin courtesy of Stirling University Drama Society: an all-female cast.

Directed by Chris Donnelly and Siobhan Jess (both fourth year students at the university), this amateur but inventive production aims to explore both the complexity of interactions amongst young girls, and the way these relationships are tested in the most extreme, isolating, and terrifying conditions.

When a plane crash leaves a small band of schoolgirls its only survivors on an unnamed jungle island, the two central characters, Rachel and Jacqueline, begin to battle one another almost immediately for dominance.

Rachel’s judicious and logical plans for survival initially win her leadership of the group, but a hunger for more than just food is already apparent in Jacqueline and her clique.

We hope that this reworking of ‘what many think (to be) the greatest novel in English since the Second World War’ (Williams) satisfies the little savage in every one of you.

ow officially a six piece, the charging pipe and fiddle led assault that has seen the ‘Pirates

of Puirt’ rocking far and wide is now joined by the stunning vocals of Calum Alex MacMillan from Lewis adding the depth and power of Gaelic song to an already phenomenal instrumental arsenal.

Dàimh (Gaelic for kinship) bring together Aonghas MacKenzie (Cape Breton) on Pipes, Gabe McVarish (California) on fiddle, Colm O’Rua (Ireland) on banjo/mandola and a Highland rhythm section of James Bremner on bodhran and guitarist Ross Martin in a glorious musical celebration of their common ground.

FENCE COLLECTIVE’S CHRISTMAS POP SPECIAL WITH THE RETURN OF

ollowing on from last year’sfantastic event with Davy Scott we thought we must ask another

guest artist to curate their very own take on the festive season.

So the exciting prospect of having King Creosote bring together some of his friends to share their take on the festive period is a Christmas must do pop occasion.

During the early nineties the skuobhie dubh orchestra was one of Scotland’s

Ftop alt. folk bands, blending bluegrass and skiffle beats with homespun yarns about Fife-wide fame and fortune.

The sdo disbanded sometime around 1996, but the various members have long since played a part in Fife’s fence collective, with acts such as king creosote, pip dylan and the pictish trail. the sdo were dragged out of early retirement last year to play at the big tent festival in Falkland, and will continue this revelatory return to form with a festiveappearance at the Tolbooth alongside a few well worn but friendly fence collective faces.

Alasdair GrayOld Negatives/The Scots Hippo12 September - 24 OctoberThroughout his career, Alasdair Gray’s work in art and literature have been interwoven paths, overlapping in form and content. Born in Glasgow in 1934, he has worked as a teacher, painter, illustrator, playwright, scene painter, essayist, poet, novelist and muralist (the latest being the monumental decoration of Glasgow’s Oran Mor), among other roles. In his books, word and image are juxtaposed and combined to form epic narratives that have been compared to the work of fellow artist-writers, such as William Blake. He is a prolific writer, with 18 published books to his name, and a winner of the Whitbread and Guardian book prizes. Gray is currently completing his biography ‘A Life in Pictures’, to be published by Canongate in 2010.

This exhibition focuses on 2 series of work: illustrations for his own poems in Old Negatives first published in 1989; and The Scot’s Hippo print series Gray’s adaptation of the TS Eliot poem The Hippopotamus from 2007.

Now is the timeKaty Dove & Simon Yuill7 November - 19 DecemberPlease join us for the Private View on Friday 6 November 6-8pmUsing University of Stirling’s Norman McLaren archive as a starting point for developing new artwork ‘Now is the time’ is a collaboration between artists Katy Dove and Simon Yuill.

This project, presented in three forms: live performance, exhibition & web project was launched in May 09 at the Tolbooth’s experimental music festival Le Weekend with a performance by Muscles of Joy of which Dove is a member. Whilst developing new material for this performance, the band viewed McLaren’s films and used text from letters in the archive as lyrics. Drawings by Dove relating to McLaren’s interest in the relationship between sound and image were developed by Yuill to produce a piece of software. Through this, projected images responded to live sound.

In this exhibition Dove and Yuill will further develop interactive animation using sampled improvisations from Muscles of Joy. Dove will explore the idea of representing a musical structure or notation using printmaking. Dove & Yuill will draw on McLaren’s principals and ideologies in a contemporary context. Software developed for the project will be available online.
