adopted that includes energy efficiency and

renewable energy with 100% renewable

energy the ultimate goal

UNDP helped fund an expert study that foundthat solar with some biofuel would allow

100% energy independence

Once solar energy was chosen as the main

energy source, funding was obtained and a10kW solar generator was constructed for trial

on Fakaofo

UNDP funded a study that showed that thepilot project demonstrated that solar was

indeed a viable and reasonable economic

choice for Tokelau electricity generation

New Zealand MFAT joined with Tokelau to

get solar companies to express interest in

proposing and pricing solar sufficient to

provide 90% of Tokelaus electricity

With funding from Tokelaus budget, a solardesign specifically for the Tokelau conditions was

prepared

Tenders were received and evaluated with theresult showing that a $8.5 million budget can

purchase enough solar to supply more than 90%

of Tokelaus electricity.

$7m will be funded by NZ from future budgetaryallocations to Tokelau. The short-fall of $1.5m

still being sought by Tokelau from other sources
