School of Humanities and Creative Arts Art History and Theory • On Friday last week the Department of Art History and Theory ran another very successful Art History Day for

year 12 and 13 students from local high schools. This year we were delighted to host around 100 students from 7 Christchurch schools. Students were treated to mini lectures on Feminist Art Histories and Art Forgery, and attended workshops showcasing the UC Art Collection, Archives and Rare Books Collection. A tour of the School of Fine Arts and an Art History quiz completed the day. Many thanks to everyone who made this such a great event.

• Barbara Garrie delivered a pre-event talk titled ‘Spectacles of Food in Eighteenth-century Europe’ for Chamber

Music NZ’s presentation of ‘DALLA TAFELMUSIK AL DIVERTIMENTO’, which was recently performed by Ensemble Zefiro.

• Art History student Meredith Sim has curated an exhibition titled ‘Snapshots: Exploring a Turning Point in Japan’s

History‘, which is now on show on Level 2 of the Central Library Te Puna Mātauraka. The exhibition uses the photographs and archives of John Macmillan Brown – now held in the Macmillan Brown Library – to explore the customs and manners of Japan and its people during the early 1900s. A floor-talk will be given by Richard Bullen and Meredith Sim at 12pm Friday 17 August.

School of Languages, Social and Political Sciences Japanese Zea Harman (JAPA415, Advanced Japanese Language) gave a talk to 24 students of Tokorozawa Kita High School, Saitama-prefecture, Japan. As part of an interaction with JAPA326 (Advancing Japanese), she talked about the differences between universities in New Zealand and Japan based on her own experiences at UC and Waseda University in Japan. For most of the Japanese high school students, it was the first time to visit a university campus, let alone in New Zealand, so they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to our beautiful campus. Some students became inspired and motivated to learn English harder to match the UC students’ advanced Japanese language skills. Some were hoping to come back to UC to study as a student in the future.

Linguistics We would like to thank Professor Daniel Schreier (Professor of English Linguistics, University of Zurich), who has been with us for the last 6 weeks as a Visiting Erskine Fellow. Professor Schreier has taught half of LING320, given several dept/NZILBB talks, met with many graduate students to discuss their work, and advised on possible future course developments. He also led a workshop on publishing strategies, lending insights from his work as an editor of the prestigious journal English World-Wide. We are very grateful for his contributions, and to the Erskine fund for funding his trip. Jen Hay has been invited to be Plenary Speaker at the 2018 Conference of the NZ Linguistics Society, to be held at Victoria University of Wellington in November.
