FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My Dear Friends, Happy 4th of July Weekend! While it is a most unusual Independence Day without fireworks and parades because of the pandemic, we still celebrate our nation and the freedoms we enjoy. The work of this great project called America that our founding fathers began almost two and half centuries ago is still ongoing. Much like our lives of faith, America is still unfinished, she is growing, and she is still maturing. Even with our country’s many failings, she is still very much that “shining city on a hill” to so many. This year we have been called to reflect on those who don’t share that optimistic view of the American experiment, but this bold experiment is predicated on reliance on the “Supreme Judge” that Thomas Jefferson appealed to in the Declaration of Independence which he concluded by stating: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” The beauty of America is that we are many called to be one (“e pluribus uno”) which echoes the words of our Savior who prayed to our Father that we may all be one (cf. John 17:22). Yes, we have many deep differences, but we are called to see the face of God in each of our brothers and sisters, and on this holiday, we are called to love, listen to and respect those we rightly call our fellow Americans. Last weekend, we announced to all of you that our beloved parochial vicar, Father Luis Flores, was to be transferred by the Archbishop to another assignment. We thank Father Flores for his three years of dedication and love for our parish. He came to us as a newly ordained priest and grew before our eyes in the image of Christ, the Good Shepherd. He departs with our prayers and with a community that loves him as it has loved all the priests who have made Christ present in the Eucharist at our altar. I will miss his counsel and his friendship. Father Flores’ departure ushers in the arrival of Father Omar Ayubi. Father Omar comes to us from Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in West Kendall. He is a fine priest who was loved by the parish community that sends him to us. Please join me in

welcoming Father Omar to Little Flower, and pray for the success of his priestly ministry here in our parish. Obviously, this is not the optimal time to receive a new priest because the majority of our parish and her ministries are still shuttered because of the pandemic, but the work of the Church continues and the most important thing that Father Omar will do for all of us is to celebrate the Divine Mysteries at Mass. We entrust him to the intercession of our Blessed Mother, the Mother of all priests and to our patroness, St. Therese. Finally, to bring this column full circle and back to the birth of our nation, I want to share the wise words of Pope Benedict XVI delivered at the White House in 2008: “From the dawn of the Republic, America’s quest for freedom has been guided by the conviction that the principles governing political and social life are intimately linked to a moral order based on the dominion of God the Creator. The framers of this nation’s founding documents drew upon this conviction when they proclaimed the "self-evident truth" that all men are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights grounded in the laws of nature and of nature’s God. The course of American history demonstrates the difficulties, the struggles, and the great intellectual and moral resolve which were demanded to shape a society which faithfully embodied these noble principles. In that process, which forged the soul of the nation, religious beliefs were a constant inspiration and driving force, as for example in the struggle against slavery and in the civil rights movement. In our time too, particularly in moments of crisis, Americans continue to find their strength in a commitment to this patrimony of shared ideals and aspirations.” God bless America! DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO

Mis Queridos Amigos, ¡Feliz fin de semana del 4 de julio! Si bien es un Día de la Independencia muy diferente sin fuegos artificiales y desfiles debido a la pandemia, aún celebramos nuestra nación y las libertades que disfrutamos. El trabajo de este gran proyecto llamado América que nuestros padres fundadores comenzaron hace casi dos siglos y medio todavía está en curso. Al igual que nuestras vidas de fe, Estados Unidos aún está incompleto, está creciendo y todavía está madurando. Incluso con las muchas fallas de nuestro país, ella sigue siendo esa "ciudad brillante en una colina" para muchos. Este año hemos sido llamados a reflexionar sobre aquellos que no comparten esa visión optimista del experimento estadounidense, pero este audaz experimento se basa en la dependencia del "Juez Supremo" al que Thomas Jefferson recurrió en la Declaración de Independencia que concluyó al afirmar: "Y para el apoyo de esta Declaración, con una confianza firme en la protección de la divina Providencia, nos comprometemos mutuamente nuestras Vidas, nuestras Fortunas y nuestro Honor sagrado". El fin de semana pasado, les anunciamos a todos que nuestro querido vicario parroquial, el Padre Luis Flores, fue transferido por el Arzobispo a otra tarea. Agradecemos al Padre Flores por sus tres años de dedicación y amor por nuestra parroquia. Él llego a nosotros como un sacerdote recién ordenado y creció ante nuestros ojos a la imagen de Cristo, el Buen Pastor. Él parte con nuestras oraciones y con una comunidad que lo ama como ha amado a todos los sacerdotes que han hecho a Cristo presente en la Eucaristía en nuestro altar. Extrañaré sus consejos y su amistad. La partida del Padre Flores marca el comienzo de la llegada del Padre Omar Ayubi. El Padre Omar viene a nosotros de la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes en West Kendall. Es un buen sacerdote que fue amado por la comunidad parroquial que nos lo envía. Únanse a mí para darle la bienvenida al Padre Omar a Santa Teresita, y recen

por el éxito de su ministerio sacerdotal aquí en nuestra parroquia. Obviamente, este no es el momento más oportuno para recibir un sacerdote nuevo porque la mayoría de nuestra parroquia y sus ministerios aún están ausentes debido a la pandemia, pero el trabajo de la Iglesia continúa y lo más importante que el Padre Omar hará por todos nosotros es celebrar los Misterios Divinos en la misa. Lo confiamos a la intercesión de nuestra Santísima Madre, la Madre de todos los sacerdotes, y nuestra patrona, Santa Teresita. Finalmente, para regresar al punto de partida de esta columna y volver al nacimiento de nuestra nación, quiero compartir las palabras sabias del Papa Benedicto XVI pronunciadas en la Casa Blanca en 2008: “Ya desde los albores de la República, la búsqueda de libertad de América ha sido guiada por la convicción de que los principios que gobiernan la vida política y social están íntimamente relacionados con un orden moral, basado en la señoría de Dios Creador. Los redactores de los documentos constitutivos de esta Nación se basaron en esta convicción al proclamar la “verdad evidente por sí misma” de que todos los hombres han sido creados iguales y dotados de derechos inalienables, fundados en la ley natural y en el Dios de esta naturaleza. El curso de la historia americana demuestra las dificultades, las luchas y la gran determinación intelectual y moral que han sido necesarias para formar una sociedad que incorporara fielmente estos nobles principios. A lo largo de ese proceso, que ha plasmado el alma de la Nación, las creencias religiosas fueron una constante inspiración y una fuerza orientadora, como, por ejemplo, en la lucha contra la esclavitud y en el movimiento en favor de los derechos civiles. PRIMERA LECTURA ZAC 9: 9-10 Esto dice el Señor: “Alégrate sobremanera, hija de Sión; da gritos de júbilo, hija de Jerusalén; mira a tu rey que viene a ti, justo y victorioso, humilde y montado en un burrito. Él hará desaparecer de la tierra de Efraín los carros de guerra, y de Jerusalén, los caballos de combate. Romperá el arco del guerrero y anunciará la paz a las naciones. Su poder se extenderá de mar a mar y desde el gran río hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra’’. SALMO RESPONSORIAL SAL 144: 1-2, 8-9, 10-11, 13cd-14 R./ Acuérdate, Señor, de tu misericordia. SEGUNDA LECTURA ROM 8: 9, 11-13 Hermanos: Ustedes no viven conforme al desorden egoísta del hombre, sino conforme al Espíritu, puesto que el Espíritu de Dios habita verdaderamente en ustedes. Quien no tiene el Espíritu de Cristo, no es de Cristo. Si el Espíritu del Padre, que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos habita en ustedes, entonces el Padre, que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos, también les dará vida a sus cuerpos mortales, por obra de su Espíritu, que habita en ustedes. Por lo tanto, hermanos, no estamos sujetos al desorden egoísta del hombre, para hacer de ese desorden nuestra regla de conducta. Pues si ustedes viven de ese modo, ciertamente serán destruidos. This past week, after several months of design work, building, customizing, updating, and fine-tuning images and content, our new parish website finally went live! The menus and layout of pages are still very similar to what you were accustomed to on the previous website, but the overall look and feel have been completely rebuilt from the ground up, with the goal of facilitating navigation and making the site more functional and user-friendly.

Beyond the visual updates and improvements, the biggest change is the new location of our regular weekly updates, now found on a dedicated “News and Events” page. We’ll still share important updates right on the homepage, but a new blog-style page will keep a running record of our weekly parish news and events. The weekly “Pastor’s Desk” bulletin column will also be archived online in a similar format. Finally, all throughout the website, we’ve incorporated new technology to help streamline the process for things like Baptisms, Weddings, Religious Ed registration and Sacramental Certificate requests.
