GEAR UP FAFSA EVENT PREPARES SENIORS FOR COLLEGE
During the week of January 30, the Gear Up office held a FAFSA make-up week in the Learning Commons, for seniors who had not yet completed their FAFSA and CSS profile. Gear Up (Gaining Awareness and Readiness for Un-dergraduate Pro-grams) has been working with seniors all year to ensure that every Lawrence High School graduate has the oppor-tunity to attend college. “The goal of this week is to attain 100 percent completion rate
of FAFSA by all seniors” said Gear Up financial aid advisor Monaliza Peña. “Anyone who passes MCAS
and graduates from Lawrence High School can go to college, and
if they complete the FAFSA, many can go to community college almost for free.” The FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid) determines if a student qualifies for federal student aid. “Most Lawrence High School seniors qualify for the maximum Pell grant of $5900 per year, which covers almost all of the cost of a year at community college” explained Peña. The Gear Up office enlisted the help of community volun-teers to help Lawrence High School students completed the necessary paperwork. Thanks to Gear Up and the community volunteers for

PEP BAND HAS THAT LANCER SPIRITIn the midst of all of the cheering and clapping at LHS basket-ball games, you'll hear the LHS All-Campus Pep Band and 9GA Drumline pump up the crowd. I bet you've also joined in on that ever-famous "Let's go Lancers, let's go" cheer! As a group in its third season of performing at athletic events, students in Pep Band show their enthusiasm for their school and teams by rehearsing twice a week after school during football and basketball seasons. Jeremias Caceres, Adryan Espi-nal, Kelly Torres (all 2nd-year band students), and 10GA Band Director Ryan Solero have been key players in making this group thrive with their dedication and
leadership for the last two years.
You'll frequently see 9GA Drum-line performing with the Pep Band. This group of first-year drummers rehearses 4 times a week during 6th-Period Lab at 9GA, and in a few short months
they've mastered a handful of tricky drum ca-dences! Both of these groups will per-form of Friday Feb-
ruary 17th at 7:00pm when Boys' Varsity Basketball squares off against Andover High School! Pep Band and 9GA Drumline are led by Emmanuel Toledo, 9GA Band Director."

LHS is forming a com-mittee to visualize what the Learning Commons should be. If you have an interest and would like your opinion heard please email Beth Smith at [email protected] We will create a survey and see what students and staff have for a vision. We will meet at a convenient time for the majority but it will be a volunteer committee.

FARIBORZ MASEEH VISITS LHS
On Thursday March 2nd, Law-rence High School welcomed one of its most generous and commit-ted friends for his first visit to the Lawrence High School Campus. Since 2000, Fariborz Masseh, a businessman and philanthropist from Newport Beach, California, has partnered with Lawrence High School to support our students as president of the Massiah Foun-dation. The foundation supports
Lawrence High School students interested in math and science to attend the MIT SEED pro-gram, and through the Massiah Scholarship has helped countless graduates attend college. A num-ber of current LHS teachers were themselves Massiah Scholars as LHS students. Mr. Maseeh was born in Tehran, Iran and came to the United States to attend col-lege at Portland State University.
He earned a doctorate from MIT and later founded the Intelli-Sense, which became a leader in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Today he is an entre-preneur and community leader whose philanthropy has positively impacted a great many commu-nities. Lawrence High School was proud to welcome Mr. Masseh and is grateful for his time and efforts to support our students.

the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a Commendation School for achiev-ing High Progress in accountabil-

NEW CIVIL RIGHTS MURAL IN THE WORKS
There’s a new civil rights mural in the works, from Eric Allshouse’s Upper School Mural class. Located on the wall in the first floor café near “H”-building, the mural is based on this premise: “Basic human and civil rights are a foundation to every great society. In our current times, we reflect back on those that helped make our world a better place to live, helping all people attain the basic right of equality. Each person
fought hard, spoke up, and stood strong for what they be-lieved in, works no for wom-en's voting rights, Hispanic workers rights, freedom from tyranny abuse and oppres-sion, and simply the right to be treated as an equal.”

The LHS Learning Commons has partnered with the Lawrence Public Library to provide access to the resources of the Public Library to all LHS students. Over the next few weeks, every LHS student will be signed up for a library card, which will provide access to the on-line resources of the library, as well as check-out materi-
als. Efforts are underway across campus to educate students about the public library and how it can support their learning. The Lawrence Public Library has
two branches. The main branch is at 51 Lawrence Street, adjoining the North Lawrence Common. It is open Monday-Thursday 9am-8pm, and Fridays 9am-5pm. The
South Branch, located at 135 Parker Street, is open Mondays and Wednes-days 10am-5pm, Saturdays 9am-5pm and Sundays 1-4pm. Check out the library website at http://www.lawrencefreeli-brary.org/

DANCING WITH THE STARS
The fifth annual Dancing with the Stars: Teacher’s Edition took place in the PAC on Friday evening, March 3rd. Dancing with the Stars flips the tradi-tional teacher-student dynamic by pairing an experience stu-dent dancer with a (generally) inexperienced faculty dancer. Campus Headmaster Michael Fiato and Upper School ELA teacher Nichole Couture served as Masters of Ceremonies for the event. Celebrity judges included Mayor Daniel Rivera,
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mary Lou Bergeron (herself a four-time participant as a danc-er), Meghan Reed, Ana Medina and Lorena Garcia. Sabrina Morgan and Manny Rivera placed first with a Prince- and Princess-themed take on Swing Dance. Other dancers includ-ed Fernando Rodriguez with Danyska Morales (Jive Dance), Emmanuel Toledo with Ashley Arias (Waltz), Eric Spencer with Christie Adames (Disco), Ryan Solero with Rashelly Polanco
(Cumbia), Cynthia McKeen with Bryan Nunez (Lindy-Hop), Audrey Martin with Miguel Dejesus (Samba), Mayor Rivera with Rafaileidy Pita (Merengue), Juan Rodriguez with Shaney Santos (Rumba), and Sondra Longo with Karlin Soler (Tan-go). Great fun was had by all. Thanks to Upper School dance teacher Quity Morgan, who de-velop the idea and works very hard to make it a reality each year. She is already recruiting faculty dancers for next year!
