CHI Memorial Named “Best Regional Hospital”CHI Memorial is once again the only hospital in the Chattanooga area to be named a Best Regional Hospital
by U.S. News & World Report, 2017.
On the list of Best Hospitals in Tennessee, CHI Memorial is ranked third, and Vanderbilt University Medical
Center and University of Tennessee Medical Center Knoxville are ranked number one and two, respectively.
Only eight of Tennessee’s 150 hospitals meet U.S. News’ standards and are ranked. The other five hospitals
are in Nashville and Memphis.
CHI Memorial is honored to be one of an elite group of hospitals that received a ‘high performing’ rating in all
nine surgical procedures and chronic conditions evaluated by U.S. News: colon cancer surgery, lung cancer
surgery, COPD, heart failure, heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair,
knee replacement and hip replacement. Only 48 hospitals in the country reached this achievement.
together, we achieve excellence.

Chairman’s messageHogden Mainda, foundation board chair
We are incredibly thankful for the generosity of each and every donor. Your gifts are
making an impact.
This past year, CHI Memorial went through a strategic visioning process. CHI Memorial
Foundation gladly participated given the important role we play in supporting the
hospital’s vision. The strategic visioning process reiterated the reason we are here....
one purpose….to give good patient care.
The CHI Memorial Foundation’s board and staff are proud of the work we have done supporting the hospital’s
mission. Please take a few minutes to read about the many programs and services that CHI Memorial has
implemented due to the philanthropic work the foundation has done. We are humbled and grateful for the
overwhelming support and proud to say that 100% of these donations go directly to the donor designated
purpose and stay local.
Thank you for allowing us to care for you and your family. With your continued support, we look forward to
enhancing our purpose by impacting lives, making a difference and healing our community.

CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga Earns Honors as the Top Nurse Employer in TennesseeCHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga has been recognized by Nurse.org as the number one hospital for
nurses to work for in Tennessee. During the past two years, Nurse.org collected 1,198 reviews by nurses
at 100 Tennessee hospitals about their workplace satisfaction. The data from the reviews from Tennessee
reveal CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga has one of the highest levels of job satisfaction among its nurses.
Reviewers cited great staff, great teamwork, and opportunities for advanced education as the basis for the
4.2 star (out of 5 stars) rating with 100% of the nurses surveyed recommending the hospital as an employer.
Nurse.org provides a safe platform on which nurses leave honest workplace reviews. Completely
anonymous, nurses share their opinions about culture, nurse-to-patient ratios, and other matters important
to them.
Making the list of top hospitals shows the facility is focused on nurse satisfaction. Nurse recruitment—a
challenge today—becomes easier when the hospital can demonstrate its commitment to nurses by pointing
to an unbiased source.
CHI Memorial Expands Its FootprintOn December 29, 2017, CHI Memorial acquired Cornerstone Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe and has
acquired the former Hutcheson on the Parkway in Ringgold, Georgia. CHI Memorial will provide services at
the newly named CHI Memorial Hospital - Georgia and CHI Memorial - Parkway.
On Tuesday, February 6, 2018 CHI Memorial associates, board members, volunteers, leaders, members
of the clergy and others gathered for the blessing and dedication of CHI Memorial Hospital - Georgia. The
Most Revered Wilton D. Gregory, S.L.D., Metropolitan Archbishop of Atlanta, officiated the ceremony.
CHI Memorial is expanding services at the Atrium Medical Center in East Brainerd. The target completion
date is set for October 2018. CHI Memorial healthcare professionals located at Atrium Medical Center
include The Chattanooga Heart Institute, the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center, CHI Memorial Primary Care
Associates, CHI Memorial Convenient Care, CHI Memorial Pediatric Diagnostic Associates, CHI Memorial
Regional Sleep Center, Imaging Services, and the corporate offices of CHI Memorial Health at Home and
Memorial Health Services, in addition to other partners.

Kramers Fund Tomosynthesis 3D Mammography at CHI MemorialThanks to the generosity of Rich and Barbara
Kramer to CHI Memorial Foundation, the MaryEllen
Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial Hospital
Chattanooga was able to purchase an additional
tomosynthesis 3D unit allowing more women
the benefit of this technology. Different from
traditional mammography, the tomosynthesis scan
provides multiple low-dose images of the breast at
different angles. The multiple images are combined
to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices
that can be viewed as a single three dimensional
reconstruction of the breast. This allows our
radiologist a more complete picture of the breast,
improved visibility, and increased ability to pinpoint
the size, shape and location of abnormalities. It also
improves cancer detection in women with
dense breasts.
Above: from left – CHI Memorial Foundation donors Rich and Barbara Kramer, CHI Memorial CEO Larry Schumacher, CHI Foundation President Jennifer Nicely, VP Oncology Services Deb Moore and Breast Radiologist Dr. Jessie Varnell celebrate the installation of tomosynthesis 3D mammography at the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial.
When we work together, we can accomplish great things beyond ourselves. Here we celebrate the accomplishments of the 2017-2018 giving season.

together, we put your gifts into action.president’s message
It has been an exciting year for the CHI Memorial
Foundation thanks to the generous outpouring of support
from our community!
This year your funds helped serve many different aspects
of CHI Memorial—from ensuring our community has the
latest in medical equipment such as 3D mammography,
to bringing new technology including Breathe Easy Mobile
lung screening coach to our region, providing screenings
and health care to our community’s most vulnerable
populations, and ensuring we have highly educated clinical
staff by providing scholarships for advanced education and
nursing degrees.
We are proud to announce almost $50M in contributions
have been made since the Foundation was created in 2001,
and more importantly 100% of every dollar has stayed here
for the benefit of the people in this region. Through your
generosity thousands upon thousands of our citizens have
received the best healthcare available!
Every single contribution, large and small, is critical and we
are grateful you trust us with your philanthropic gifts.

together, we celebrate our survivors.
Pink! 2018 Gala Raises Record Breaking Funds for Breast Center“A Night in Old Havana” was the theme of the 13th annual Pink! Gala chaired by Dr. Taylor and Tiffany
Whaley and Dr. Tom and Susan Flanagan. Held on Saturday, January 28, 2018, the event broke records,
netting $389,000 for the MaryEllen Locher Breast Centers at CHI Memorial. Through the past thirteen
Pink! gala events, nearly $4 million dollars has been raised. All funds stay in our community directly
benefiting patients.
Since the first MaryEllen Locher Breast Center opened 12 years ago, 3,500 women have been diagnosed
with breast cancer. In 2016 alone, more than 27,500 mammograms were provided and 355 people were
diagnosed with breast cancer at the center.
Proceeds from the 13th annual Pink! gala went toward the purchase of a tomosynthesis, or 3D mammogram
machine for the newest location of the MEL Breast Center at The Atrium in East Brainerd. Special thanks to
our presenting sponsor First Tennessee Bank and our more than 106 sponsors who made “A Night in Old
Havana” such a tremendous success.

Local Fundraisers Benefit CHI Memorial• Every year the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies’ Auxiliary continues to provide valuable support, donating
funds to advance patient care, including cardiac services and the Schmissrauter Center for Cancer
Support. This year these dedicated women, with the motto of “service above self”, held a variety of
events and raised more than $2,400 to benefit CHI Memorial.
• Paint Polk Pink, in Polk County, held an adult prom complete with a DJ and recycled prom dresses. The
event was spearheaded by Kelley Morgan and raised $3,700 for the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center.
• Judy’s Nails partnered with local vendors in the Hamilton Place area with a full day of support from their
customers including a walk from their shop to Starbucks and lunch for the participants. The mobile
mammography coach was also on site providing services. Judy’s Nails proudly presented a check for
$3,005 to benefit the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center.
• Boyd’s Speedway held a Pink Night raising $3,240 for the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center. Race attendees
bid on auction items and Boyd’s owners made a donation on behalf of every attendee.
• American Jeep Club Project held a rally in Dalton to support the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center, raising
$1,000. They also had the mobile coach in attendance and are already planning their 3rd annual event for 2018.

5K & Walk Benefits CHI Memorial’s Outreach ProgramThe 6th Annual Elizabeth’s Outrun Melanoma 5K & Walk took place on Saturday, May 12th. A large crowd
enjoyed a beautiful day at Enterprise South Nature Park while raising funds to support CHI Memorial’s
Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma Outreach program. This program is focused on outreach and education to
decrease the incidence of melanoma and diagnose it earlier through educational events, skin checks and
partnerships with area dermatologists.
Some facts about Melanoma:
• Approximately 91,000 people will be diagnosed with this cancer in 2018 and 10% will die as a result.
• Melanoma rates have been rising for the past 30 years.
• The average age for those diagnosed is 63; however, it is one of the most common cancers in
young adults.
• While the overall risk of getting melanoma is 2.6%, the likelihood varies when comparing ethnicities. For
Whites, the chances are 1 in 38, for Hispanics, 1 in 172 and for Blacks, 1 in 1,000.

“I am very grateful for the support of the staff. I have no insurance, and I don’t know what I would do without the staff at CHI Memorial Community Health Center. They have assisted me with equipment, medical supplies to care for my amputation, financial support and are now working on helping me get a prosthesis.”
- William Odom, diabetic and amputee
Caring Spirit ProgramOffering a hand to hold….giving a reassuring smile…going an extra step…sharing an encouraging word.
Simple gestures of kindness mean the most to us. Patients, family members, and friends are often
grateful for the difference caregivers make in their lives during their time here at CHI Memorial. As a gift
of thanks, donations are made to the CHI Memorial Foundation and a note of appreciation is included.
The Foundation is happy to present Caring Spirit Awards as a way to recognize our wonderful caregivers
and commemorate the generosity of our donors. These donations are returned back to CHI Memorial to
support services chosen by the donor.

together, we bring new technology to our community.
S E R V I C E S | mobile lung coach
Mobile Lung CT Coach LaunchesCHI Memorial’s Breathe Easy mobile lung CT coach allows us to take low-dose CT lung screening out into
our communities and reach people who may not have access or the opportunity to get this scan otherwise.
Thanks to the generosity of two anonymous donors to CHI Memorial Foundation, this technology is the first
of its kind in the Chattanooga region, and the only fully independent unit in the nation.
A low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan shows a 3-D image of the lungs that is clearer and more
detailed than regular x-rays, allowing doctors to diagnose lung cancer at its earliest stage, before there are
any symptoms. Lung cancer symptoms do not usually occur until the cancer is advanced, and may include
persistent cough, sputum streaked with blood, chest pain, voice change, worsening shortness of breath, and
recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis. Early detection is the single most important indicator of survival.
“With a family history of lung cancer, I felt it was important to take advantage of this critical screening tool. I appreciate the donors who made this available to me and others in the community.”
- Julie Brandao, CHI Memorial Foundation Board Member

MAGIC–Memorial Associates Giving to Improve our CommunitySince its inception in 2003, CHI Memorial associates have given more than $2.5 million through
contributions to MAGIC. The focus for the 2016-2018 MAGIC campaign centered around the theme of
hospitality. CHI Memorial has a proud tradition of providing the highest level of patient care. We want to
continue to provide not only a pleasant patient experience, but support for each other as well. Donations
to this campaign were used for improved wayfinding, an employee emergency fund for associates, and a
patient care fund to help meet necessary needs critical to care, such as personal care items.
Associates and their families celebrated the success of the MAGIC campaign with A Night at the Lookouts
on July 28, 2017.

Tribute Giving
Honor a loved one with a tribute gift to CHI Memorial
Foundation on holidays, anniversaries, birthdays and
other special occasions. Memorial tribute gifts are also
a meaningful way to honor the life and spirit of a special
person.
Host an Event
Events are a great way for small business owners and
community leaders to bring fun and unique activities to
their community with proceeds benefiting CHI Memorial
Foundation. All events benefiting CHI Memorial must be
approved in advance by calling (423) 495-4141.
Corporate Sponsorships
A corporate sponsorship to one of the Foundation’s
annual events gives your business recognition as an
organization that gives back to the community. Your
company’s name and logo can appear on invitations and
programs, and in newspaper and magazine pages.
A corporate sponsorship also has a lasting impact
on the community by making events such as Pink!
successful enough to bring back every year and provide
funds for programs and services at CHI Memorial.
Planned Giving
A planned gift to CHI Memorial Foundation is a great
way to ensure that your legacy of giving in life continues
to impact the next generation of health care recipients.
Become a Friend of Memorial
A Friend of Memorial is an individual who has made an
annual gift of $100 or more. Donors receive recognition
in the Foundation’s monthly E-news, in the annual
report, and on the donor recognition wall.
For more information on ways to give, call (423)
495-4438 or visit www.memorial.org/foundation

@memorialgiving
The CHI Memorial Foundation was
founded 2001, is led by a Board of
Directors made up of 30 community
leaders and physicians, and has raised
almost $50,000,000 in 17 years. 100%
of funds stay in the Greater Chattanooga
Community.
The mission of the CHI Memorial
Foundation is to serve our community
by strengthening Memorial’s mission
to nurture the healing ministry of the
Church. All of our efforts are directed
at increasing the resources available
to Memorial to provide services to our
community.
