REWARDING AND CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT POLICY
1. KEY PRINCIPLES
Our Christian ethos is firmly grounded in core biblical principles of service, compassion,
justice and respect for all, where every student is valued as an individual. We strive to
ensure that self-confidence, ambition and purpose are consistently nurtured through praise,
encouragement, and celebration of achievement. This is very much lived out through our
House System which provides a nurturing ‘family unit’ that instils a genuine sense of
belonging and encourages mutual respect between students of different ages. Praise is also
a key element of our Behaviour for Learning Policy which seeks to ensure that thoughtful,
positive behaviour is an outstanding factor in successful learning.
2. OUR AIMS - WE ASPIRE TO:
Work together to learn, to grow and to serve as students and staff proudly represent their house. The House System at Emmanuel doesn’t simply present the opportunity for healthy competition within an enjoyable, highly stimulating atmosphere, it enables every student to earn ‘House Points’ that are aggregated on a regular basis, culminating in the presentation of an overall House trophy in the end of year Act of Worship. The House System is recognised by the whole school community as providing a respected platform for showcasing achievement.
3. CELEBRATING SUCCESS
Praise and recognition may be used by staff in many different ways as highlighted in the examples below - this is by no means an exhaustive list, because we will always seek new opportunities to praise the achievement and celebrate the success of students in our care.
Informal ways, for example by regular positive recognition of every day acts of
consideration through verbal praise (public and private)
Written feedback on students’ work
Providing opportunities on our Young Leaders Programme whereby students across the
age range take on different leadership roles and responsibilities.
Trusting students with whole school responsibilities such as reception duty
Sending students to meet with HOD, HOH, DLC, APM and the SLT for further praise of
positive achievement in academic work, personal development and service
The presentation of certificates, prizes and trophies at the Key Stage 3 Presentation
evening, the Sports Awards Evening, Year 11 Presentation of GCSE Certificates Evening
and Prize Giving for Year 11 and Sixth Form
The culmination of house points awarded for all inter-house events including curriculum
competitions, charity events and attendance leagues
Drawing commendable behaviour and attendance to the attention of parents through:
Praise Phone calls (aiming for 5 calls per week per member of staff) - Feel Good Friday
- Staff should record any praise calls or mail on eportal under the “actions” section. There will be no house
points awarded for this telephone call.
Letters home or positive messages in the student planner
Departmental postcards
Student achievement sections in the student planner
Reports on eportal
Celebration Services - students awarded prizes for academic, personal service,
attendance, music and sporting achievement
The attendance league
Prominent displays of student achievement and work in classrooms and corridors
throughout the school
Recognition of achievement outside of school in the community through the Emmanuel
Express newsletter, the Achiever magazine, and local press releases
House Acts of Worship in which students are rewarded for a variety of achievements
Letters of Congratulations from the Principal
Although these are very much valued in their own right, they are also acknowledged as part of a whole school rewards system which is centred around the collection of house points. The success of such a system relies on everyone buying into it and in practice this means every member of staff awarding house points on a daily basis. The key to a successful reward system is the clarity around which house points are awarded. Consultation with staff and students has resulted in the following key principles:
It is an expectation that students will follow the Emmanuel codes. They will be
expected to wear correct school uniform with pride, bring the correct equipment to
school and complete assignments without reward.
House points should be given in recognition that a student has gone beyond
expectations.
The categories of rewards are embedded through the school mission statement so that
all students recognise their unique role in living out the values we promote though their
daily life in school and beyond the school gates
Each of the achievement categories will attract a different value in terms of the number of
house points awarded. It is anticipated that this philosophy will encourage students to
progress in relation to the different outcomes, going beyond what is normally expected.

Attendance Students will receive their half termly attendance % through the House Acts of Worship with the graphs published on the House Notice board at the beginning of each new half term. (In the summer term the annual attendance figure will be based on attendance up to the week before CEW week so that data can be collated for the KS3 presentation evening). Tutors will publish the individual student results to their tutor group during a Thursday/Friday tutor period ensuring all students record the data in the attendance section of their planner. The student’s position in the league will be determined according to the figures on the chart noting that the half term % figures are cumulative:
Champions League 100% Attenders
Premier Division 99% - 99.9%
Division 1 98.9% - 97%
Division 2 96.9 - 95%
Division 3 less than 94.9%
Note – the autumn term figures were calculated on last years % and the above table is
implemented from the Spring term 2016.
There will be a prize draw in the House Act of Worship every half term with the following 3
prizes (per house) :
Champions League - £10 voucher Premier division - £5 voucher Moving up a division – £5 voucher The best tutor group attendance based on 97%-100% (Champions league and Premier Division) will receive a group prize on a termly basis. House Points Heads of House will regularly monitor the accumulation of house points per student and organize the presentation of certificates on a termly basis as published in the table below:

At the end of each academic year the top 5% students will receive a Platinum badge to be
presented in the end of year assembly in the sports hall.
4. EXPECTATIONS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE POLICY
Staff must be consistent in their implementation of the reward system so that it is valued
across all years 7-11 as a vehicle to celebrate achievement and to foster personal
growth and development for all groups of students.
Rewards may be entered onto eportal at any appropriate stage during the lesson or
activity to avoid additional work at the end of the day. The student must be informed at
the time of your decision to reward them because this is significant to the process of
receiving praise. Staff are required to use their professional judgment in relation to the
use of private or public praise.
Whilst we are not necessarily expecting staff to reward every student every lesson we
encourage departments through their planning documents to tie in their lesson
outcomes with the achievement categories. This will enable staff to allocate the house
points speedily! There should be something to celebrate in every lesson!

6. GUIDANCE DOCUMENT FOR TUTORS USING EPORTAL
Introduction
The launch of the rewards system has had a positive impact on our students and it is great
to hear students talking about the rewards they have achieved. As we discussed in the
training session, it is important that all students know when they have received a reward and
for what. Although this is shared by you, we also want students to celebrate the impact
within their tutor groups. This is not yet available on the school’s information management
system for parents and students and so we have created a summary that will be published
on a fortnightly basis. It is important that we are consistent in celebrating the positive
outcomes on a fortnightly basis within the tutor group in order to embed the rewards system.
We have provided guidance for tutors as published below to support this process:
As part of the worship calendar dates are scheduled for these checks and tutors and co
tutors will be expected to share the positive reward totals with every tutee. Please celebrate
with students the following information;
i. Subject tutee was rewarded in,
ii. Event (s) and creator,
iii. Total rewards received to date,
iv. Form total to date.
The information will be stored locally and you can open this excel file by following this
pathway;
Leadership and Management (K:) – Rewards – House Points
During your tutor period, you may wish to display this information on the interactive white
board for the class to see, or alternatively, adopt a more personalised approach using your
laptop to share the outcomes individually with students.
When the file is open, please follow the following pathway to open your tutor form
information. The example below is for 10.06 in yellow house.
1. Click on ‘event details’ in the first tab which will display information in a table format.
2. Select the house and form you are in from the drop down menu.
3. The information displayed in the table highlights every student in your tutor form in
alphabetical order. There is a description of the event given, house points received, the
date it was given and by whom.
4. Once you have shown this information it can be displayed in the form of a graph on your
tutor notice board. To do this, select ‘student totals’ from the tab at the bottom and the
house you are in.
5. Click on the plus next to yellow house to maximise the options.
6. At this point, you can see how your tutor group fare against the rest of yellow house.
Select 10.06 from the menu.
7. In order for you to just see your tutor group, select house, and then 10.06.
8. The information can now be shown in the form of a graph, in which every tutee can see
how many house points they have in relation to the rest of their form.
On a fortnightly basis, Heads of House publish the House totals in their House Act of
Worship, as before, fostering the element of competition between the houses.
7. GUIDANCE DOCUMENT FOR HOH IN DETERMINING THE OUTCOME OF THE
ANNUAL HOUSE CUP COMPETITION
The House Cup is determined by collating the results of the following activities:
Attendance Competition:
5 half terms
6th half term minus the last 2 weeks of the year
Charity Competition:
Christmas Hamper
Fairtrade
Curriculum Competition:
Maths
Spelling
Science
Art
Bake off
Literary
Rewards Competition
As the results are at 3.30pm on the 2nd to last day of the academic year
Sports Competitions
Football
Basketball
Fantasy Football
Sports Day
Within each activity the Houses are placed 1st to 4th and then points are allocated as
follows: 1st – 8, 2nd – 6, 3rd – 4, 4th – 2. These placings are shared with the students
and any presentations are made on the last day of term in which the activities took
place within two joint acts of worship (Red & Green / Blue & Yellow) at which all 4
HoH will be present.
The points from each activity are then totalled in order to place the Houses 1st – 4th
for the Cup (these placings are not shared with students), which is presented by all 4
HoH in the whole school, final act of worship of the year.
